Title: Matador at Rural King
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on December 16, 2017, 12:51:34 PM
Stopped by my local Rural King to pick up some LumbarJack and was surprised to see Rec Tec's newest grill offering...the Matador.  For those not familiar the Matador is a simple gas fired wok style grill.  Can also be used as a deep fryer per Rec Tec's videos.

I was surprised at the size of the main wok pan.  It's huge!  I could see myself getting this to add to my outside grilling arsenal.
I'm also glad to see Rec Tec getting into the brick & mortar stores.

Here are a couple pics I took.

Looks like you could make a nice paella in that.

They've posted a few videos on Facebook of it in use.  Looks pretty cool.

I am a good cook, but I do not create so I am not a Chef...Not even sure what I would use this for to cook, other then mass amounts of soups or stews or the afore mentioned Spanish dish!

If any of you was given this, what would you cook in it?

I don't get it.  Wouldn't a wok on a turkey fryer server the same purpose?

Sure..... but that wouldn't make RecTec any money. [ Invalid Attachment ]

Unfortunately the pan is stainless rather than carbon steel, so it is not the best choice for paella.

I'm with Lew, I don't get it.  I would rather have a solid stand alone burner for cast iron, seafood, fried turkey, wok or discada cooking.

You would not get quite as even a heat from SS, but you certainly could use it for that.

It's very similar to a turkey fryer but taller.  Maybe stainless steel is more forgiving than carbon steel for outdoor use?

I like that it's portable, so if you go tailgating or even camping it might come in handy. I agree though, I would rather use a fryer or a wok at home.

I saw these today at rural king. They looked pretty good. A little heavy and less portable that these fire discs they sell at the hardware store. I think if my main goal was portability I'd rather have the fire disc

Also, always kind of liked the mojoe griddle

Fire disc is twice the price. I think RecTec will do okay with this. I have always looked at the firedisc as something that would be neat to have but wasn't going to buy for $400. At $199 I might be a buyer.

I just realized this is a gas unit...Will be honest with you all, this site is NOT about Gas!  And neither is this section!

Setting the fact that this is the Pellet section, I will weigh in.

Don't have the Matador but do have the $400 version and it is great for certain things I cook for my family of 6.

Tomorrow morning.... 2 lbs of bacon cooked first.  when they are 75% done, I move them from the center out to the sides of the disk.  Then I throw down some hashbrowns.  Crisp them up in bacon grease... Then move them out towards edge (on edge everything stays nice and warm without cooking).

Then I make a dozen eggs.  Scrambled.

Dinner - great tool for Fajitas.  Fried fish (outside instead of inside), French fries, have made burgers where I can make some well and some med rare at same amount of time.  Have made philly cheese steak.

It is like a flat grill except the shape creates a situation where the middle is warmer than the edges so I really like it to cook several things and having it all done at once.  On my flat top it is hard to get the grill to work that way.

I will likely buy a matador for my hunting cabin.  I have the Fire Disc for home, but not going to drop $400 for a cabin version.

Well I finally got the Matador.  Why did I finally bite the bullet after waiting over a full year before making the purchase?......Because Rural King had them marked down to $99    The pan is massive and pics don't do it justice.  Should be a nice addition to patio beside my other grills.

In case others might be interested.  My local RK was sold out so I went on line and found one in a RK in a near by town.
