So recently I’ve been researching a replacement for my Cookshack PG500 that would give me more cooking capacity. I was looking at Yoder, RecTec and Blaz’n plus watching the local CL ads for any deals, but decided to pull the trigger and order a Grid Iron from Tim today. I ordered a Copper Vein Grid Iron with the Pro Shelf Kit, Lid Insulator, WiFi module and Competition Wheel Kit.
I’m really stoked and can’t wait for it to get here. Now I just need to get my Cookshack sold to help pay for it. :D

I know the feeling..Time will seem L O N G until the pit gets there, and is ready for the inaugural cook. All the best.

You have purchased a very fine pit. Post some photos when it arrives.

I certainly will. I was thinking about adding one of there grill covers, but I have a generic one that would fit over the grill. Does anyone know what their covers are like? Material? Durability?
-
Congrats. I have the same model minus the wifi kit.

Manufacturers covers are expensive, usually made off shore and have a less than expected life..For a high end pit like the G I, I would go custom. The costs may surprise you as well as the quality.

I agree

Your going to be very happy with your G I. I’ve had zero problems with mine. The cover is heavy duty and at this point seems to be very durable. I’ve had no problem with my hot rod but you’ll have the benifit of there new and improved version. ENJOY...

Congrats on your new pit AZRaptor. Looking forward to seeing pics from all your upcoming cooks. Enjoy!

I bought the cover when I got mine as my smokers sit out in the Colorado elements. Sun, snow, cold and heat. The cover is made of a very thick material and is quite durable and has held up great. I think I've had the smoker for 2 years or so and the cover shows no wear other than a slight bit of fading from the sun. It's much thicker than the cover on my Yoder, but the cover on the Yoder is more of a cordova material and it has held up very well, also. Both are waterproof.
If either one wears out, I would buy either one of them again.

Cool, thanks for the info. What little I could see of the cover on their site looked pretty rugged.

I ordered the Blaz'n cover with my GS.
I also ordered a custom cover from Covers by Mel. The cover I ordered is longer than the one from BGW and may be more wind resistant.
Both covers seem to be made of the same high-quality material. Other than length, they both appear to be made identically.
And if I remember correctly, the covers sold by BGW are made by Covers by Mel.
So you can't go wrong with the cover sold by BGW or a custom cover.

I have their cover for the GS. Very heavy duty, and after 2.5 years, no wear at all. Much too heavy to blow off. BUT--it only covers the pit to the top of the legs. Ok for me since I keep it under a porch roof and out of the weather. However, it would be better to have a complete to the ground cover if it is exposed to the weather. It was part of the deal so that is why I have it.

Got a call from Tim yesterday that my smoker will be shipping today. Now I need to move the PG500 out of its space and I’ll be ready for next weeks delivery.
Gettin close!!

I have the Blazn cover for my GI and really like it. It is very heavy.
-
I would be interested in your thoughts on the Pro Shelf. Have that on my considering to buy list.
-
I have the pro shelves for my GI. They are great. I find I use them more than just putting things on the regular grates, seems to get more uniform heat on all sides by getting it farther from the burner.

Same here. I hardly put anything on the regular grates unless I need the room.

I’ll definitely provide feedback once I do my initial cook. It’s being delivered on Thursday, so I will probably do any prep/seasoning I need to do on Friday after work and then I’m going to do the initial cook (6 racks of ribs) on Saturday.

This should be a very exciting and busy weekend for you. All the best!

So I got my Grid Iron in and setup. Did the initial seasoning this morning and then ended up cooking three racks of spares for the trial run. I started to worry that there was an issue with the controller because I would set it to a temp and once it hit that would never waver from it even when I opened the lid. I was used to seeing a bit of a flux in my PG500 temps. I suspect the reason the temp didn’t flux when I opened the door was the placement of the ambient prob inside the smoker. It’s on the left side wall with the pro-Shelf wall between it and the cooking section. While I had the Grid Iron set to 250 it read 250, but my iGrill ambient probe was reading as high as 289 in the cooking section. I’ll need to get a proven accurate therm in the main chamber to compare to the built in probe so I can check to see if I need to make any adjustments.
So on the Pro shelves, they definitely will give you more cooking configuration options, but unless you are doing something like jerky it will be unlikely you can use all four shelves at once with the spacing between them. I also noticed that if you have the lid insulator like you see on mine, and try to cook on the top shelf, it’s probably going to hit the food when you close the lid. That’s the spot you see in my second picture on the inside of the lid.
The ribs turned out great and everyone happily consumed mass quantities of tasty pork goodness.

Do you know the length and width of each of the 3 shelves?
-
Beautiful addition to your patio. I hope you enjoy it for many years!
-
Great looking pit AZ. Look forward to seeing and reading about more of your great cooks for years to come! Enjoy!
-
The temp on mine does not fluctuate very easily when the lid is open for a quick look or basting. I think that has to do with the speed sensitivity of the probe. Mine stays right on the set temp for the whole cook most of the time with only 1 or 2* variation.
Looks like you did very well on your first cook. Enjoy!

Do you know the length and width of each of the 3 shelves?
Qty 2 - 17 1/2" x 31" shelves (542.5 sq in per shelf)
Qty 1 - 12" x 31" Shelf. (372 sq in)
There is about 2.5†between shelves. Here is a pic with all the shelves in.

thanks for the measurements

Is that a WSM I see to the left? How do the Grid Iron Ribs compare to ribs from your WSM?

Yes, that’s my WSM 18â€. I cant really compare the two because it’s probably been a couple years since I’ve used the WSM. Everything I cook now is on a pellet grill or my stick burner. I do know that when I moved from the WSM to my first pellet smoker I personally did not notice much difference.

How many racks of ribs do you think you can smoke at one time?
