Does anyone have a sure fire method to tear a piece of foil from the box that is straight? Some how I end up with the last inch or two being being torn off at an angle at times.
-
Got to keep pulling down at same angle as you started it at. As you get closer to the body you tend to pull level or out/up more causing the little wow at end. Place box on edge of counter and pull all the way through at same angle. Your hand has to get lower as you come to the front to tighten the edge closes to your body as you cut. :2cents:
I see this all the time in the paper mill. We tear 260 wide paper all day with 2 people. You can tell when the guy on the front pulls up and not down through the end you get that extra tail left on we have to tape down.

I am no help, got into alcoholic rage yesterday trying to get one piece to cover butts! Took 3 tries.
What species are used?

Thanks Mudflap, I'll give it a try..Makes perfect sense.
Bent- That was the kind of problem (irregular tearing) I was encountering. Now we know how to do it.

Use to have problems with the Reynolds stuff. Picked up the commercial stuff from Sam’s, even my son can get a perfect tear with it.

Less drinking while cooking! ;D

I think this is one of the driving reasons why folks have switched to pans instead of wrapping butts. LOL
-
On each end of the box that the foil comes in, there is a perforated area that if you push in, it will lock the roll into place. That helps a little bit. I have seen it on every brand of foil!

I forgot to mention that I get the foil ready while the butt is still packaged. Pre-sizing makes it much easier than hot off the grill!

No, it's not a Russian hack. One thing I would add, is closing the lid back over the box before tearing. I never knew this, and I been around a few decades.

Aluminum foil? No sweat.
Now Saran Wrap makes me want to kick the dog.

My issues is being lazy. I have never had issues with plastic wrap or aluminum foil trying to come out of package...but I have used the 2.1 mile ones for so long I don't remember dealing with the little store bought ones.
Our foil is in a bottom shelf, so it is not really possible to tear it correctly when you are 3 feet above it...yet I do, then I get angry why it does not come off correctly! :pig:

Especially when nearing the end of the roll.......

I HATE Saran Wrap, even more so since it's perfect for some things. It's so hard to use, it laughs at me as I pull the roll out to use it. The wife showed me a tick though. Lay it out on the counter, pull out what you need, and put your forearm across it then tear. It's still a PITA.

I get the one from Costco with the slide cutter. Pull out what you want stick to edge of counter and slide the cutter across. Easy peasy until you pick up and it clings together.

Yup... show me how to tear off a hunk of Saran Wrap cleanly and I'd be eternally grateful... Even more so , if you show me how to do it on the big 18" wide rolls that I like to use when I wrap my bacon in during the curing process.

Even though this has shifted more to saran wrap, I wanted to chime in and say I only use the heavy duty foil anymore. I sometimes get the messed up corner, but not that often and usually only when I don't make the single steady motion others have mentioned. If I just commit myself and make the rip in one motion it's almost always clean. Also, with the heavy duty I usually don't get 5 inadvertent holes in it before I get it applied as well.
As for saran xxxx, er I mean wrap, I can't offer anything there. I just avoid using the stuff since I usually want to kick or punch something before I'm done. Especially when it clings to everything I don't want it to and nothing I do :'(

Off topic again;
Saran= self clinging..That is, to itself or anything near it. I think the answer to handling Saran is two people, 4 hands.
-
With saran wrap, I too use the big box that has the cutter on it. I pull it out the length that I need and let it lie on the counter/island and then put the food on top and wrap it up. If I am putting it over top of a container, I pull it over top of the container and let it sit on top and then cut and secure to the container. Easy peazy as someone else said here. ;D
-
Aluminum foil I can do, but frustrating when I have to try to grab into the box to regrab the end again.
The roll seems to back roll or something so it's hard for me to grab.
With Saran wrap, I pull it out with the loose end on the edge of my countertop, then pull and lay out down and then put item on top of it.
If I'm putting something over a bowl, you just grab enough to hold it against one side of the bowl, pull it up over the top and down the other side and tear with a quick angled rip.
-
The answer, thanks to Mudflap..IT WORKS. Absolutely straight tear. No tails..So easily done.
-
When it comes to Saran Wrap.... I say "screw it" and pull the roll out of the box. I just hand tear it off when done. I guess I have too much experience using shrink wrap in my old job in a warehouse.
