Title: LG900 with cold smoker Box at Costco
Post by: lyork on April 14, 2018, 11:24:11 PM
Was at Costco today, came around the corner and saw this. They’re making it very hard to say “no” to buying one of these!!

I saw this posted in another forum.  They bought it and were impressed.

Interesting.  The MAK side smoker box is a $700 addition and this grill sells for $800 with it included.  Not crazy about having to bend down to put things in it and take them out, but price is incredible.  I would be interested to hear what the heat differential is from the main chamber to the side smoker box.  If it can stay below 90 degrees while grill is on low heat, you have a huge cheese smoker on your hands.  If it can stay above 140 while you are cooking, you have a huge warming box that should hold 5 half pans.

I don’t see this model on their website. Seems to be a one-off just for Costco.

Confirming these are back at Costco. I believe it it the same model as people have commented on from last year.  I was at the Costco in Minnesota and saw it this weekend too.

I saw it today in Maple Grove Minnesota.

How does the cold smoker box work on these?  The smoke travels down from the main smoker?

Certainly looks like a "Do All" unit!

On the MAK there is an exhaust port for lack of better term that then goes into the smoking chamber.  I am assuming that there is something similar on this unit.

Yes. It looks like there is a butterfly valve in the pipe between the main body and the cold smoke box. You control the temperature of the cold smoke box by opening / closing that butterfly valve until you get the amount of heat you need to maintain the temperature you want in the cold smoke box. Any excess heat / smoke, not needed in the cold smoke box vents out the holes in the top, back of the main body. That is the way it appears to work to me.

Interesting.  They don't show the front shelf on the website.

As I understand it , the price of that setup at Costco, is cheaper than other places sell the LG900 alone.

I think they sell that smoker box separately for other grills, in the add on thing, it has two wheels for support on the right hand side... the setup at Costco doesn't seem to have any support at all on the right hand side, surely that's not such a brilliant way to go, no support at all for that big smoker box???

Having said that, the price is so attractive, I'm sure a person could find a reasonable way to support it with some sort of home built legs or something.

Could you use the pellet grill without the smoker attached? Did it come with a plate to cover the exhaust that goes to the smoker?

If you click on the picture to make it larger, it appears to have a butterfly valve in that pipe between main cooking chamber and the cold smoke box.  You should be able to close it off and all of the smoke would exit through the holes at the back. There is no reason to detach the cold smoke box and put a plate over the hole.

Thanks. I did see the butterfly valve. Two reasons for my question...one is I am space limited for storing when not in use, two is it seems to be $100 cheaper than anywhere else for the grill alone. The cover and shelf are icing. Tbh I have no idea what the smoker is for...yet.

If you look at the picture in the above link, To me it looks like the smoker box is mounted to the bottom of the grills cart. And probably is secured at the top.
