Title: What mods have you made
Post by: ShireSteve on September 13, 2017, 07:04:56 AM
I have a DB, with the following mods. Front shelf mounteted inside grill on SS bolts as second cooking shelf. Downdraft installed, pizza oven attachment which is newish and in the learning phase but already turning out better pizzas than straight off the grate.

What useful other mods have you guys done?

not sure if it qualifies as a mod but I removed the cart and turned it into a "built in"

Wanted a 2nd shelf in the Daniel Boone that was easy to take out.  So I did this modification.

Notice the perfectly straight cuts for the slits on the side, and the almost invisible beads on the welding to extend the 2nd shelf to the proper width.  That is some quality fabrication right there!

Traeger front shelf, GMG front shelf mounted inside grill as a removable second cooking shelf, Don Godkes stainless steel downdraft, GMG pizza oven, lid thermometer, removable pellet labels (currently M for Maple), upgraded 9dBi Omni WiFi Antenna...

I have the often bashed Traeger Jr. Elite. It's often bashed because I own it and it's my right to speak the truth. I look at it like a good marriage. If ya can argue and still keep the peace, you'll go a long way in yer relationship. So I got that outta the way.

My 1st overnight butt led to the addition of an extended pellet hopper. I suffered a flame out about 3 hrs in when I woke up and had to take the butt to the fridge. That led me to think an extended hopper would solve the issue. I figured the added weight alone would force the pellets into the auger tube.
NOPE! The 2nd attempt finished much like the 1st.  I don't know what it is that makes my pit tunnel out with frequency, but it does. I did get some UHMW tape as an experiment but haven't applied it because I don't have near enough and it's $$$.

Same thing for the front shelf. Got it but haven't attached it. If Bentley is a cheap screw, I'm the lazy nut.

I did make a 2nd shelf, but it's pretty much worthless as it invades too much of an already small area. It's too close to the top for most purposes, and interferes with food handling on the main grate (turning, flipping, etc.).

Not much you can do with a Jr. BUT... it's perfect for me.  :)

I put a shelf in front that was actually for my Traeger Junior.  I also made a second grill shelf using SS bolts.  I use this for everything except when I am grilling steaks or cooking pizza.

I also made a new front shelf from recycled bits of garden furniture that my pup had missed on his mission to eat my seats.

I recently purchased a used 2015 Jim Bowie WiFi and am starting to gather my parts now.  I have a Don Godke's Downdraft hood that will be delivered tomorrow, a GMG Front Shelf that will be here tomorrow and some FireBlack Nomex gasket to seal the lid that is also to be delivered tomorrow.  As you can see, I have some work to do this weekend.  I will post some pics once I get everything done.  I hope to purchase some GrillGrates in the next few weeks as well.

I have the pizza oven too, what do you have going on inside there?  I see what looks to be bricks sitting on top of your stone?  My interest is piqued :)

They are indeed stones. They are 'hot rocks',had a date night with the wife. Could never get the rocks hot enough for a nice sear on a steak in the oven, the GMG pizza oven does a great job of getting the rocks hot. [ Invalid Attachment ]

Removable second shelf that slide on the lower grates and easy to remove. Stove pipe elbow. $3 vs $50 for Godke's vent. Added a Corian front shelf.

I really like this mod.  I've got a JB that I could use a second shelf for smoking sausage and that would be perfect.  Did you get the channel from anywhere special?

I could not find it in Mayberry, so I had to drive 20 miles to Orange, VA.  If you are in a larger city, I just cant imagine it being tough.  And I think it is aluminum, and for the life of me I can't figure out why I thought it had to be that!

This really doesn't qualify as a "mod" but it sure is useful.  Mosquitos are pretty bad out here, so I do my cooking in a screened porch.  With the stack as it is, all that smoke goes straight up and starts discoloring the ceiling.  With a 3" elbow and some extension pipe, I can direct it off the porch.  This was particularly useful yesterday when the grease drain on the DC was blocked and I heated the grill up to 500 to cook some steaks.  Vaaaaaast clouds of black smoke, followed by ignition and about 6" - 12" of flame shooting out of the pipe.   ???  Good thing that wasn't going straight up!

Yikes, sounds like a cleaning might be in order!  Then again the fire probably took care of that.

Obviously no air flow issues when bent?  No huge temp offsets or fluctuation?

Nope, works just fine.  I usually don't have it set at 90°, normally it's at 45° or so.  That pic is one of the first ones I took of it.  I have a shorter pipe for when I run >300°, it's about 6", otherwise it's too close to the screen.

Added my Downdraft and front shelf the other night. Only completed the burn in so far.  Hope to try out this weekend.  Next mod will be the gasket to seal the lid (I already have it) and a Tru-Tel GQ300 Temperature dial.  I do not like the factory dial.  Anyone know if it is a direct fit or do I need to drill the hole out?

LSFS, can you post a pic or two of how you mounted the Traeger front shelf?  It looks like it's mounted outside the barrel (like my Tailgater's) on the Traeger and to the front of your DB.  I couldn't insert your original post because it seems my only choices are from the second page of the thread.

Thanks,
BP

I am not @ home right now but it comes with 2 mounting brackets that attach to the legs.  One hole matches the GMG and the 2nd I had to drill out myself.

No hurry.  Just going off the dimensions, I thought it would bolt to the legs.  I was looking at the pic you posted in the GMG mod thread and it looks like it sits much higher than the GMG shelf, almost right below grill level.  It may just be the way the pic is.  I'll have to go look at the one I have on the Tailgater.

Thanks,
BP

Here is a side shot.  The bolt on the side of the leg is the one I added.  There is also a bolt on the front of the leg but it lines up with the GMG leg bolt.

That looks perfect!  Nothing like my Tailgater shelf.  I didn't realize it had the extra uprights.  And the GMG shelf is going inside as a second shelf.  I'll have to wait a few weeks to slip the purchase by the boss, but that's not a problem.  Thanks LSFS!

I like how that looks and works.  And being at grill level is also better in my opinion.  I can't find any Traeger shelves with the uprights like that.  I guess they've changed the design and bolt them on the predrilled holes on the barrel of the pit now.  I've looked on eBay, Amazon, Firecraft, and Traeger sites.  Any other suggestions are welcome.  Thanks, BP

I logged into my Target account, clicked on reorder and here is the page it sent me to:

It looks like even though its the "same part" they've changed the design... Dang!

I've found one listing on eBay with the old style:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Trager-Lil-Tex-Grills-Folding-Front-Shelf-New-In-Box-/182795075286?hash=item2a8f6f7ed6:g:cHsAAOSwno1ZoY9T (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Trager-Lil-Tex-Grills-Folding-Front-Shelf-New-In-Box-/182795075286?hash=item2a8f6f7ed6:g:cHsAAOSwno1ZoY9T)

Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up!!  I'll keep my eye on to see if it has any bids.  Didn't notice it was the older style until I put my glasses on and saw the uprights on the box.  Thanks LSFS!!  BP

I made my own grate, drilled holes into the body and used 4 stainless steel standoffs to hold in place.  Initially made it as an auxiliary cooking grate but it has become my go to cooking grate as the hot spots are evened out across the gates.
