Title: Show Us Your Pets
Post by: Kristin Meredith on August 24, 2017, 02:02:40 PM
Larry Hill loved his pets and loved seeing pictures of other folk's pets.  So, in loving memory of Larry, I would like to start this thread.

I think some of you remember one of my first service puppies, Dexter.  He went to the Indianapolis comp with us.  He is now a full fledged service dog, assisting a gentleman in Pa. who has at least one seizure a day.  Dexter and his owner are also doing important training work by working with EMS teams to teach them how to interact on a call when the person in distress has a service dog.

OK - the issue is "fixed" but ideally we would be able to post photos in line and not have them show up @ the bottom.  I will continue to look into this.

My son with his Weimaraner, Oliver, in the lead.  My Maddie trailing.  The wind was blowing off of the lake, here, so they didn't have to buck the heavier cover.

Maddie on the deck scanning the yard for interlopers.  I checked that right eye and it was fine.  I don't know why it's squinted like it is.

Willa with shoe.

When we leave the house we can use the security cameras to see what the dogs are doing.  Willa finds something that smells like one of us and sleeps with her head on it.  When we return she greets us carrying whatever she has used.  She doesn't chew on the clothing, she just carries it around.  She has a "soft mouth."  (Retriever term.)

Haha. This isn't the internet? Just kidding. I know what you mean. We call him "can't get right".  Believe it or not he cost 1000 dollars, and was supposed to be "show quality". We had him to the vet so much for issues in the first 6 months,  they gave us half our money back. He needs special food for his stomach at 40 dollars a bag. He cant jump more than a couple feet. He wheezes constantly and leaks goop from his eyes and nose. He doesn't really clean himself like most cats. He stands in the shower while the water is running. And the list goes on. He gets so tangled up from the water, goop, and no cleaning that we have to have a groomer give him a "lion cut" as illustrated in the following picture.

I don't have pets, as such, as my job sometimes needs me to travel away from home.

However, often when I am at home, I foster for the local animal rehoming centre. Some of the dogs are fostered because they simply need a break from kennels. Others are with the centre only temporarily, while the owners are in hospital, or perhaps in temporary housing that doesn't allow pets. Sometimes, such pets pine in kennels and thrive better in a domestic setting.

Here are three of my visitors.

When I had the beagles, I dearly wanted to keep them, despite the practicalities - they were with me for 3 months, and felt part of the family. The good news is that they were reunited with their owner soon after they left me.

Because of job, it's been a couple of years since I did a lengthy foster, and I do miss it. However, I do get to look after this little lady whenever my friend goes on holiday.

I loved hunting with my lab, will be fun to have a pointer this time.

I hope that you can get her over birds that will hold so she can point them.  The wild pheasants where I've been hunting no longer hold, they run.  (Well, some hens will hold.)  So when they run the pointers don't have the opportunity.

My son and I have hunted over Weimaraners for years.  We're switching to flushing dogs, Springer Spaniels.  (That's how they got their name, they spring the game.)  We seriously considered Labradors.

Ironic.

This is Freeze.  He was found at my work outside during the winter months.  He was very very cold and just as hungry.  Took him into our work and fed him and got him back to health.  Took him home where unlike my other cats is the only one that goes outside as he has always been an outdoor cat but we let him him in as he wants to warm up if need be and for food.  Sometimes he will want to spend days in side inside and other times just 10 minutes. ;D

Thank you.  He is a very cool cat and unlike others I have had over the years.  He hangs like a dog would.  You can go outside and will will follow like a dog and you can call him like a dog as well.  He is afraid of nothing which is good and bad.  All the neighbors know him and his story on how we found him and why he is outside.  They all also leave food for him and two of the houses also put out a place for him to sleep in as well. ;D

Those are beautiful Samoyeds.  I had a retired show dog Jazz that was an Australian Shepard.  A hairy monster that we had for 10 plus years and she was 5 when we got here from a breeder my wife's sister knew.  Excellent dog overall.

Yep he is a real fattie, When we found him years ago he was starved and in very poor health. Now all he does is eat and has been that way since day one. Have tried to get him on proper foods but he won't have anything to do with that. He also likes Pizza, not the crust, just the sauce and cheese. So I figure if he wants to eat then fine with me, our others are well mannered and eat normal. LOL!! Him, well you see it. mister FATMAX, I wish I could find the pict of him from behind sitting on the floor. His butt almost covers the width of a 12" tile  LOL.

Dakota is a mini Australian Shepard
Smartest dog I have ever seen (and I am not just saying that because it's my dog it's the breed that is smart)

Oh and there is hair EVERYWHERE no matter what you do!!!

This is Rusty.  I can't really call her a pet.  On Easter Sunday I saw her frantically running around in one of the fields. I tried to lure her in because I was sure someone had lost a pet -- or even worse, dumped one in the country which happens a lot.  I could not get near to her, but she did come up to the house the next day to get some of the food and water I left out.  She eventually came up and started hanging out and sleeping on the porch.  She would not let us get near her.

Time passed and she would come up to us and sniff our hands and legs.  She follows us everywhere.  As it got cold, I built a little shelter on the patio to protect her and lined with blankets and fleece.  She seemed pretty comfortable.  I tried getting her in the house, but she would come in, run around like a mad dog for about 30 seconds and run outside.

About 2 weeks ago, we had a real unusual cold snap and it got down to 19 degrees.  Bent thinks I am too much of a softy, but I opened the door that night and she came trotting in and sat on the rug near the fire.  I brought her blankets in and she built herself a little nest. She is now Miss House Pet.  Hardly wants outside and seems to be house trained.  BUT... she still won't let us pet her!!  I would like to give her a bath and take her to the vet, but can't get to her to even pet her.  The photos are so bad because , when she saw me holding the camera, she starts to run (former witness protection puppy?).  Perhaps she was abused.

Anyhow, she is now somewhat ours.  If any of you dog folks have idea on how to pet and hold her, I would love to hear from you.

It will be tough (and a bit heart-wrenching) to convince her that you're not a threat.  I did it once but it took almost a month.

Get down to her level about 6' away.  Even if you have to lay down on the floor.

Talk quietly while gently tossing her a treat.  "Good girl, good girl."

Reduce the space until she'll come right up to you.

Put a treat in your palm and lay your hand on the floor so she takes the treat as though it's from a bowl.

After a period, sit up and let her take treats from your hand.

Then put the treat in your lap.

Resist the temptation to pet her when she's close.  When you finally pet her don't reach down to her from above.  Start with you hand at her eye level.

Treat:  Dogs love cheese.

Thanks.  She will take a treat from my hand as long as she can kind of snatch it and run.  Never thought to sit on the ground and be at her level.  I am also afraid she is blind in her left eye.  It had a good size cyst on it when she came that has disappeared, but the eye does not look right to me.

I looked back at the photographs.  Her left eye doesn't reflect light in the same manner that the right one does.

Snatching treats from hands--  Like humans, dogs lose sight of things as they get closer to their mouths.  (Try it with your fingertip.  So when you get a drink from a water bubbler you look at the water column, remember where it is and put your mouth on it.)

Dogs do the same thing.  If you offer something in your fingers to a dog, they have to remember where it is.  They may go for it rapidly so you don't move it away.  That sometimes causes people to instinctively pull their hands back.  That conditions the dog to grab things faster and faster and people sometimes get bit.  When that happens the people may incorrectly blame the dogs.

So–when feeding a dog by hand, people should put the treat in their palms and hold it in one place.  The dogs will bump the palm with their noses but will eventually become accustomed to the process.  I don't mind a wet nose bump on the palm.

This is Zolo who was suddenly taken from us by a malignant cancer. It happened so fast that the wife and I were caught completely unprepared and have spent the last week coping and grieving. We realized just how interwoven his life was with ours; from the mundane to the spectacular, there wasn't a facet of our lives of which he wasn't a part. We miss him greatly and yet find happiness (with tears) in remembering his gentle, loving nature. The world is just a little bit less loving and selfless with his passing.

 THE RAINBOW BRIDGE.

We have lost many precious pets over the years. It has always been a heartbreaking time..The fond memories carry on..

The last dog we had to put down due to cancer was gut wrenching..Our vet sent us a letter of condolence. Attached to it was a sheet describing the "Rainbow Bridge". It  went on to say you would rencounter your your pet at the end of the Rainbow Bridge,a green meadow this side of Heaven....

I tear-up writing this even though it has been several years since.

 Michael_NW;Such a lovely looking dog..

So sad for your family, but so much better for Zolo.  You gave him a great life as a beloved pal, and he gave you a lifetime of unconditional adoration.  Now is when this tragedy teaches us a lesson in grieving with grace—difficult to do, but remember that you haven't taken anything from him, you've given something to him: a release from a kind of life he couldn't enjoy.  Condolences to you all.

Two Master Hunters in your household!  Good for you and good for them!

For readers who aren't familiar with the American Kennel Club (the world's most prestigious general breed canine organization).  This designation means that the handler/dog have spent many hours focusing the dog's instincts and perfecting its performance.  They (I mean both the handler and the dog) must qualify at 6 licensed tests.  Not an easy task.

Two...wow!  You (and the dogs, if that's possible) can be justifiably proud.

This is Sophie.  A five month old mix adopted two months ago from the humane society in Johnson City, TN.  She is part collie, border collie, we think, as she is starting to exhibit herding tendencies. The vet thinks there is some Sheltie, also.  And to confuse everyone she has a dewclaw on each hind leg.
That reminds me, and looks like my first dog, "BONNIE" (male). Endless energy - would run for miles. Super nose; could smell a tennis ball 15 + feet away..One ear up, the other down..Loved to chase cats and skunks... Hated the mailman as he would like to lie against the front door that had a mail slot in it. The mail would rain down on him resulting in several sounds of complaint... He lived into his 19th year...  Your Sophie is a lucky one; found a caring home!

Dozer doing his best Winston Churchill impersonation.

Note to all other dog owners -- I took the corn cob away immediately and did not let him chew on it;  corn cobs are dangerous to dogs and ingesting them can kill the animal.

Maybe some of you have seen this -- it gave me a chuckle!

How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change a Light bulb ?

Border Collie -Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code.

Poodle --I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Golden Retriever --The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re worrying about a light bulb?

Dachshund --You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler --Make me.

Lab -- Oh, me, me, me! Puh-leeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Huh, can I? Huh, can I? Huh? Huh? Huh?

German Shepherd -- I’ll change it as soon as I’ve led these people from the dark, checked to make sure I haven’t missed any, and made just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Cocker Spaniel -- Why change it? I just pee on the carpet in the dark.

Doberman -- While it’s dark, I’ll sleep on the couch.

Pointer -- I see it. There it is! There it is! Right there!

Australian Shepherd -- First, let me get all the other light bulbs in a little circle.

Our oldest Weimaraner is in hospice care.  Of course it's heartbreaking.

I'm thinking that this (https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=the+new+spotmini&&view=detail&mid=AC1B4B0430D0AEDA16AFAC1B4B0430D0AEDA16AF&&FORM=VRDGAR) will be my next "breed."

Yeah but it won't shed and it don't look like it would be any fun to "buddy" up with either.
Sure sorry to hear about the weimaraner, we are very close to the same thing with our yellow lab.

One year Marcia & I wrapped dog treats for our Dachshund, Ilsa.  We opened the store packaging so she could smell them and tear open the Christmas wrap.  She caught on and ripped into both packages to get what she could smell.  PERFECT VIDEO!

Not so smart on our part.  After that she thought that every gift-wrapped parcel had a treat in it.  None were safe under the tree.

Smell Britta's ears when she's a very young puppy.  If they ever smell any different it'll probably be because something is brewing up in there.

I worked with people who scolded me for training bird dogs and making them hunt.  They didn't like shooting sports and never saw a gun dog work.  I would tell them that every one of my dogs, going back to my youth, hunting with my father, would rather hunt than eat.

My grandfather rowed a skiff on the Baltic Sea with a big black dog in the back.  The dog would jump in the water and pull a net.  Grandpa would row in a circle, the dog would climb in the boat and grandpa would pull in the net.  He once showed me a magazine photograph of a Newfie and said that was the kind of dog he used, but the Newfoundland Hound name wasn't familiar to him.

I later learned of the Newfie's way of instinctively rescuing swimmers by turning their backs, offering their tails as a handle and swimming to shore.  HOW NEAT IS THAT!

They are the scariest dog I have ever come face to face with and the 2 of them use them to pig hunt. They both are the nicest guys you could ever meet. Another beautiful animal, supposedly one of the 10 deadliest dogs in the world.  Maybe I am just naive, (and outside of some specific military or police needs) but seems to me a dog being deadly comes down to its owner being a Wanker!

Yep, that’s them. His are massive, I bet his males easily weigh more than a buck fifty. They are huge and really good looking dogs, you can also tell they are very aware of their surroundings, very alert looking all the time. They interact with his family like your or my family dogs. He does say that he has zero worries about a burglary except for the people if they did try. He lives pretty rural in a smaller Kansas town. I do know that they won’t deliver mail and no package delivery either, gets both at his office.

Willa, my previous avatar, passed.

Whenever we returned home we'd find her walking around the house with some item of Marcia's clothing that she's taken from the laundry basket.  It was a shoe when she couldn't get to the laundry basket.

She died of the canine equivalent of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig disease, slowly from her hind quarters forward.  For the past several months she couldn't climb the stairs to her bed.  So I inflated an air mattress and slept on the family room floor to keep her company.

I think Nala is 7 now.  I never wanted a dog.  My wife brought her home one day without my approval or notice.  She is a pure bred maltese (I wasn't happy about what that cost either).  Needless to say, I am not looking forward to the day that she passes away as she has become our child.  I feel for all of you who have lost your pet recently (or ever for that matter).  Never thought I would feel that way.

Over the last year, she has had some medical issues that we have spent $ to figure out (more than I would have said I would have ever wanted to spend).  I think we finally have it figured out.  Seems like she has had a thyroid issue.  Since she has been on medicine the last few months, she has lost 3-4 pounds.  May not seem like a lot.  Since she has lost the weight, she has been zipping around the house as joyful and playful as she used to 3-5 years ago.  I am glad that I think we have finally found the issue with her health that seems to made her happier and more active.

BTW, she rules this house.  Tells us when she is hungry (we usually feed her around 5pm but she tells us it is dinner time if we lose track of time), when her portable doggy door is not in she tells us when she needs to go outside to potty, she also comes to visit me in the basement between 9pm-10pm when she thinks she needs a snack before bed.  It is all like clockwork.  Amazing minds and bodies they have.

Anyway, that is partially my story.  Thanks to all for sharing theirs here.

4 months old today. By far the most driven pup we have ever had.
I apologize again, for the life of me I can not rotate the picture. Unless we take it with the I pad it is wrong. We can’t modify them, sheesh.
Thanks Bentley for rotating it, dang it I have tried everything ? Just above my pay grade I presume.

Yeah she is growing fast, she is next to her older sister, an 80# lab hound mix we rescued. She is about 6" shorter than her and gaining fast.
We have her in obedience classes and plan to continue with advanced and then agility type classes, she definitely wants and NEEDS a job, she is very driven.

Awesome, I don't know what we do wrong, if we take the pic with the I-pad it is fine, if we take it with anything else this happens and we can't rotate it?
Do I-pads not let you do that?
In any case, Thanks for the help-it is much appreciated.

Awesome job with training, we are working on it.
That is a gorgeous GSP, those are high energy dogs also if memory serves, an old girlfriends dad had one.

Nice work on the training, getsum2.

Yes, GSRs are high energy dogs.  They need a job or they'll invent one that the owner may not like.  When outside they hunt constantly.  They also have the highest play drive of any breed.

Watching them hunt upland game is a beautiful sight.  It's as perfect as a crossing pattern touchdown.

I thought that was the case with the energy level, he was a big bird hunter but only around the one, are they known as GSP (pointers) or GSR (retriever-I presume)?
He always called his a pointer?

You're right.  GSP is the more common and probably correct use.  I think of them as GSRs and can't mentally make the switch.

That pic of the staredown was funny and reminds me of a story.

I was at my mother-in-law's house a few weeks ago.  She inherited the yellow lab from her son who passed away at the end of 2018 unexpectedly.  Prior to that she decided she needed a cat to roam her yard to keep the mice and rats from the fields in the area out of her house.  My wife sent me a picture of the cat sleeping in the garage on the big bed for the dog and the big dog sleeping on the much smaller cat bed.  Well, apparently, they take turns on who gets the big bed now.

I found the breeds they selected for me to be highly non-compatible in my mind.  To me they were all high energy that would need a LOT of exercise.  But maybe I have no idea.  An Airedail Terrier, really!  So this dog is going to enjoy laying next to me on the couch as I rub his belly and watch TV?  Looks like he would like to be hunting rabbits, but I guess I really don't know.

I would appreciate you all taking it and seeing what you think.  I told them I was a couch potato, no kids, big lawn and did not want to spend any time training my dogs, shedding and barking I did not even care about.

I think you'd be okay with both a dog and cat in the house as long as the dog arrives as a pup.  That may not be true for some Terriers.  Scotties are little assassins and they're fast as lightening.  I loved both of the Scotties we had over the years.

(I think I like most dogs more than I like most people.)

Thought I would share a story. We have taken Britta to doggie daycare quite often since she was about 3 months old. A lot of the time 5 days a week. It really helped her to burn off excess energy as she is very intelligent and very high drive. We have lately taken her less and less. One day, maybe 2 a week. I got a call from the manager and she asked me if they had done something wrong that caused us to use them less. I told her absolutely not, the team is truly fantastic. She then told me about Henry one of the team, They are referred to as “pack leaders”. Henry has Down’s syndrome and absolutely LOVES Britta, just as she LOVES him. They are together all day. She went on to tell me that Henry really misses her when she is not there. Here is proof, thought I would share. I know her body language very well and I can tell in an instant if she likes you or not. She is not at all aggressive but she is VERY selective about her human friends. If she is not comfortable with you she just avoids you. Her face tells me all I need to know about Henry. I know that probably sounds goofy but it is true. She is just like this with our Granddaughter also.

Those of us who know our dogs well know exactly what you mean.  Dogs communicate with body language and they can "read" you in an instant.  You can't fool them.  Some people believe that dogs can smell fear.  They don't.  They recognize fear.

We adopted this sweetie a couple months ago. She was in a home with dogs and wasn’t liking the company, so we happily took her in. She talks a lot and wags her tail non stop like a dog, if it’s not moving you know she’s out cold. Her name is Smudge because of her black nose.

Thanks guys, she’s been a blessing for my kids through this pandemic for sure. The lady that had her before said she wasn’t very playful, so I know she was a stressed out mess. All she does is sleep, eat and play like a maniac.

We had adopted 2 cats a couple months before from a shelter and actually had to surrender them back because of horrible behavior problems. The shelter even said there’s not much we would be able to do to fix them, they would need behavior therapy and scenery changes through at least a couple foster homes to even have a chance to change. The same day, Smudge shows up in my wife’s Facebook feed looking for a home. I was ready to be done, but I’m glad the girls persisted. She’s about as sweet as she looks.

These are pups, Clover on the left and Freddie on the right.
We have had Clover for 2 years now, we got her at 10 weeks old. We got her as an emotional support dog for my wife who is suffering from PTSD. She is a transit operator and had a pedestrian attempt suicide by jumping in front of her bus. Clover is doing a great job offering support especially at night. She will wake up my wife when she is having nightmares and cuddles with her to help my wife settle.

We got Freddie last year. We believe he is about 3. He is a rescue from a shelter that used the vet where my daughter worked. He was in rough shape, very skittish and his coat was a tangled mess. After a month we had his coat unmatted and he was on the way to be a happy boy.

what breed of dogs?

They are both Shi Tzu. Clover and Fred are our 3rd and 4th of the breed. We lost Cleo (left) 4 years ago and Oliver (right) 3 years ago.

Well dang.
We just added to our family by rescuing a Dutch Shepherd.
So happy to have been fortunate enough to bring her home for Christmas.
Her name was Venus, we opted to change it to Vala, supposedly it is German origin with the meaning of “singled out”.
We wanted to keep V in the picture and since we looked far and wide for a new companion, singled out seems to fit.
Anyway here is a quick picture of her, she is still settling in.
I was able to grab another picture while she is resting. Some people are vehemently opposed to animals on the furniture, this couch seats anyone.
This will better show her colors.

Last July we lost Sadie, our faithful companion of 13 years. We thought we were not going to get another dog. However, I never realized how empty the house was without her.

Last week we brought this "little" friend home. Her name is Ilsa, bonus points if anyone can guess where the name came from (think classic movies).

She was so small she was able to walk through the fence we put up. We added some animal netting around the fence, but there was still a wide gap at the gate. I decided to repurpose a couple of grill grates with a few zip ties and it seems to have done the trick. I hope she gets a little bigger before I need the cold smoker again!

Does Ilsa enjoy going to Rick's Cafe and listening to Sam sing? ;D

My guess is that Ilsa is from the Muppet's movie Casablanca.

What a cute little pup.

She looks' like a good food vacuum dog!  They are my favorite.

I frequently walk into the lounge to see her balancing on her rear legs on the arm of my recliner, trying to peer into the top shelf of the bookcase next to it.

Because that is where I sometimes place my plate, high up, out of her reach, if snacking while reading or watching TV.

She now does it whether she has seen a plate there recently or not.

But it is the betrayed look when there is nothing there that really makes me laugh.

I have never seen an Otter eat.  I am not sure I have ever seen an animal so happy to eat.  I especially like the way Kotaro holds his head.  Just found this video so amusing!

Tina is a Havanese which are direct descendants of Maltese, Coton de Tulear and Bichon Frise. that were developed in Cuba from gift dogs from the Spanish.

In our community it's common to decorate your mailbox with some symbolic figure. We decided to attach a small statue of our old dog and are now replacing it with our new dog.

Yeah, I don't know which is worst, growing or shedding hair. I assume that your dog also does not shed. If I let Tina's hair go too long the groomer cannot trim her, too many knots, he just shaves her.
