Title: Folding Front Shelf
Post by: Brushpopper on September 20, 2017, 01:15:06 PM
I am wanting to put a folding front shelf on my DB, but I didn't bookmark the Amazon page that had them.  I just bookmarked the page from PH thinking I would be able to access that when I was ready to pull the trigger.  Do these look like the folding shelf brackets that some of y'all used on yours?

https://www.amazon.com/Amarine-made-Polished-Stainless-Folding-Bracket/dp/B01M98RPML/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1505926878&sr=8-2&keywords=folding+shelf+bracket+heavy+duty

And please forgive me Bentley if we aren't supposed to post links.  I read something about that in the user agreement.

I am not sure if you are wanting a custom shelf?  You do know that GMG sells one?

I see folks even install them inside...

I'm not sure how sturdy that would be.  I liked the way someone on PH did one.  He used those brackets (I think those) and then mounted a stair landing on them after varnishing it.  It looked really nice and seemed very sturdy.  And I think the GMG shelf certainly would be better off mounted inside.  I might spring for the GMG shelf, then tell the wife I don't like it and go with my original plan.  Except I'm much like you, Bentley, and don't care to part company with my finances.  Decisions! Decisions!

Found a piece of Corian so I can cut on it and not have to worry about bacteria as clean up is easy. 16" deep x 24" wide using the same brackets as above.
Work awesome!!

That looks great and an even better idea with the Corian!  And now I know those are the brackets I need to get.  Where does a fella go to find some Corian?

That looks great!  I need to make something like that so I don't need to schlep a table to the cooker

I bought the "Traeger Lil' Tex Elite Folding Front Shelf".  Even though its designed for a Traeger it fits my GMG DB perfectly.

Have a nephew that works for a kitchen cabinet company, they had a piece left over.   ;) ;)

I'm not sure how sturdy that would be.

Just FYI on the front shelf, I have the GMG front shelf for my JB and it's plenty sturdy.

That's good to know.  And probably the easiest way to go, too.  Just bolt it on and go.  Might get two and put one inside.  Thanks Sleebus!!

Even if the GMG shelf is sturdy it sits way lower than I'd like and I want a solid surface, not the grates.

I happened across a GM dealer in a small town today while there working on a case.  Went in and they had the DB front shelf for $35, so I got since it was cheaper and no shipping from GMG.  I'll get it on there this evening and let y'all know.  Thanks y'all!!

I installed the GMG shelf and it seems sturdy enough.  I'll give it a few weeks and then it will probably live inside the grill and be the second shelf.  I do like LSFS's idea and might go that route.  I've got to wait awhile for the wife to forget about it.  That's my diabolical plan so I can get both.

More money than the GMG, maybe a wash if you include shipping, but that of course is not a solid surface - how did you attach the Traeger shelf?

I built a magnetic folding shelf for my Mak 1-star, but you can easily make a folding shelf using some folding brackets from Amazon (about $9 each) and some wood for the shelf - i used 3 boards, glued and put together with pocket holes and stained black (or just use a flat board).  Go magnetic or drill a couple holes in the GMG to hold the brackets.  See my post under the MAK section of this forum for the complete setup, but here are a couple of pics.

That is a really good idea.  If I remember correctly, didn't the original magnetic shelf hold over 20 lbs?

You'll have to use the older style Traeger shelf with the two arms that come upward.  The arms bolt to the GMG legs.  I happened to find one on eBay thanks to LSFS.  I haven't got it yet.  Hopefully today.  Then the GMG front shelf is going inside to be the second shelf.

Great idea & it looks good. RV’s sometimes have the folding shelf hinges like that on the end of some of their counter tops.

My first magnetic setup (with harbor freight magnets) tested and held 34 lbs, but dropped at 35lbs.  It easily held 20lbs.  My second version uses 120lb magnets from Amazon and although I didn't test it, I can tell these magnets are a lot stronger than the harbor freight magnets.  So it will easily hold over 20lbs.

I finally got my Traeger folding front shelf mounted on the DB.  Had to modify the brackets a bit by making the mounting holes more oblong so it could be mounted about 1/4" lower.  The lid was dragging on the shelf when I would open it.  It works much better than the GMG shelf and is easier to fold up and down.  Thanks for the advice LSFS!!
