I went a little crazy traveling to three stores to find these chips this morning. Post pics of your potato chips in this thread. I would be interested in reading about local brands or flavors from around the country.

I'm kinda partial to Tim's chips and especially the jalapeño chips. They're a local producer in the PNW. Good crunch and flavor.

I think Southeastern PA is the potato chip and pretzel capital of the world. ;D

They stopped making this a couple of years ago.
I had them shipped from Ind to Az at least twice a year for special occasions. Years ago
we used to get them in 5 lb tin containers. Can eat a whole bag at a one sitting!!

We never really had regional chips in California that I remember, or should I say, that were memorable chips. I don't think Laura Scudder's is around any more, and maybe it was a National chip? Tom's used to be in Fresno (maybe they were National too and just had a plant there), but I think they went big time and moved to St Louis. They were more snack size and 7-11 type and I was always to cheap to buy a small bag of chips for $11!

Eating Ruffles' Sour Cream and Cheddar as I type, lol! Anyone ever hear of Grippos? They have the hottest BBQ chip of any I have eaten!

Ruffles was always my favorite.
Don't eat them much anymore, except when at friends house on poker night.
He makes homemade chips that are really good.

Being a Cheap Screw, I really like a bunch of the Wal-Mart Great Value brand chips. I have always like Frito's Chili Cheese and Honey BBQ, but $3.50/bag. Wal-mart .88¢ Also the Sour cream & Cheddar & Wavy Chips!

When I was a kid, we had a farm that we share-cropped out in a small town in, I guess, central Minnesota. The soil was dark earth mixed with sand. In our garden, my dad used to marvel at the phenomenal potatoes he grew.
Several years later, potatoes became such a major crop for the local farmers that a potato chip factory, Barrel O’ Fun, opened. They’re my favorites but I’d have to drive eight hours to get some.

We have bought Lay's for ever and always complain about how most of them are all broken before you get halfway thru the bag. Couple of months ago, we bought Walmart chips and were amazed that the chips are great tasting, fresh and not significantly broken up. So we kept on and have not been disappointed since. Haven't tried the various flavors but we usually find flavored chips too salty, and overdone in most cases. "Great Value" Originals! and the price is right.

These are not from my area. New Orleans. Best chip ever made and 2nd place is miles and miles away. I could eat these every single day, but don't. Kind of a cross between BBQ and salt and vinegar. Absolutely mind blowing good.

Our favorite chip is Kitchen cooked Louisiana style, they are fantastic. Every now and then we will find them but pretty rare. We will order them about every few months.
If you like very crunchy and salty pretzels....here you go. These are fantastic, terrible for you but so good eaten in moderation.

Wow! I didn't realize Unique had made it outside of PA. I used to have my parents ship me a box of them to wherever I was living at the time. They have been my favorite pretzel for about 35 years. Once I am thru these chips, I was going to start a pretzel thread.

Potato Chips - Lay's Chile Relleno
Flavor Profile:
Sour Cream
Onion
Cheddar
Slight hot pepper aftertaste
This is a thin chip style similar to most Lay’s potato chips that are not ridged or kettle cooked. It is inspired by the chile relleno dish at Cocina Azul in Albuquerque, NM. The chip did not taste like a chile relleno to me. It tasted more like a cheddar sour cream and onion potato chip which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. I did have a lingering spice tingling in my mouth after eating several handfuls of these chips. It just kinda snuck up on me. Not the type of spice that has you running for milk to calm the heat and burn nor the type that has you sweating. Just enough to let you know there was some sort of hot pepper in the spices included in the mix.
While I enjoyed eating them and will finish the bag, I see no need for me to buy another bag. BTW, this flavor in the Flavor Icons 2020 Series is exclusive to Walmart and 7-11. If you like the flavor profile that I described, you may want to go get a bag and give this limited edition flavor a try.

Cocina Azul has three locations here in Albuquerque. Never been to any of them.
If we go went out to eat, it is was someplace close, withing 10 minutes.
Plenty of restaurants in that distance.
Sadies Mexican Restaurant makes homemade chips that are really good.
I'm amazed how many different potato chip companies and varieties of chips there are around the country.

Its like pmillen said a few months ago...folks don't under stand "Pennsylvania Dutch", I am not to sure the reporter does. Is Hanover a city in Dutchland?

Hanover is a city south of Harrisburg, PA which is the state capital and located in the south central portion of the state very close to Maryland state line. The Pennsylvania Dutch were immigrants from parts of Germany and Austria to the eastern portion of PA. Either my great grandfather or his parents were some of those immigrants.

Don't recognize any of those names. The Amish are about 75 minutes southwest of area where I live. Most of the PA Dutch were Lutheran religious denomination.

My aunt used to ship me cases from Louisiana. She lives in New Orleans. I never saw them here until Fresh Thyme came to town. They carry most varieties. It's the only places I've seen them here outside of Potbelly Subs.
They have the hot version of the voodoo chips. I typically like heat, but in that case I think it takes away from the nuance of the chip. Much prefer the regular voodoo.

I think you worked in Tecate or some where close to TJ. I am making an assumption, like me, you have had the dish several times in Mexico. So this is all I need to hear. Although, maybe Cocina Azul has a different take on it? I would think they guys in the lab would say...Ya know marketing, sour cream & onion is one thing, these other things...Come On Man!

They also make a Carolina Reaper chip once a year that has one chip per bag.

Those ghost pepper Paqui chips are great. I can't find them around here anymore. I thought they used to have a chipotle cheddar too. I don't think I would do the one chip challenge. I've seen too many videos of people in agony after trying it.

It looks like a local CVS has the ghost and jalapeno flavors. Gonna have to check that out and get a bag of each.

Checked the local CVS stores and all they show is nacho cheese.

Had a place called Battle's BBQ where I went to college at. Served their BBQ with Ruffles. Ruffles dipped in their signature sauce, along with dipping it in there french bread buttered toast was the bomb!! Sadly they closed their doors due to the death of the owner and the family squabble over trying to take over. They had fresh squeezed lemonade too. Thankfully though one of the former managers has started his own BBQ place and has sauce that eerily resembles the old sauce. He sells it around the area but I get back there to buy some, it's out. :(

BBLew, I enjoyed that Pennsylvania Dutch snack food article. Reminded me that my dad grew up with a good friend in Easton, PA who became a marketing executive at Utz.
Every Christmas he would send our family a huge barrel of Utz potato chips. After many years he switched companies and joined Snyder of Hanover. That’s when he started sending us a huge barrel that was sectioned into different flavored popcorn and pretzels.
Every year around Christmas through most of the 70’s and 80’s our staple snacks would be Mom’s Christmas cookies and that enormous barrel of Utz or Snyder’s snacks.
Some years that tin barrel would be the size of a beer keg.
I’m plain Jane when it comes to salty snacks. Still to this day my all time favorite potato chips are Utz regular chips. Thankfully they are carried everywhere in NC.

We have lots of local chip brand here in central Ohio. We can find Grippos like were already mentioned. Mike Sells, Conns, but my favorite are very regional and come from where I grew up in Mansfield, Ohio. Jones potato chips. They were forced by the government to stop producing the best chips they made, but they are still good. They used to use an oil with trans fats in it.

Funny, I wonder if California had local chips when I lived there and I never knew about it. Not sure why all the other parts of the country would have all these regional brands I have never heard of, much less seen!

Ralphie mentioned Snyder's of Hanover. Their pretzel chunks that are coated (and I mean coated) with flavoring are my favorite pretzel. About as bad as a pretzel can be for you though. There is probably an 1/8 inch of butter, seasoning, God knows what on every one. The buffalo and honey mustard are my favorite.

Potato Chips - Lay's Carnitas Street Taco
Flavor Profile:
Steak
Onion
This is a rippled chip style similar to Ruffle’s potato chips.The chip did taste like a taco to me. It tasted like steak and onions. Then, I looked at the picture on the bag, and noticed it was pulled pork and not steak on the taco. Pork is even listed as an ingredient as are jalapeno peppers. I did not taste the jalapenos.
While I enjoyed eating them and will finish the bag, I see no need for me to buy another bag. If you like the flavor profile that I described, you may want to go get a bag and give this limited edition flavor a try.

Flavor Profile:
Mustard
This is a thin chip style. The chip tasted like mustard to me. I could not really discern any other ingredients beyond that. It reminded me of a chip from 25 years ago made by Snyder’s of Hanover, the Coney Island Hot Dog flavor.
While I enjoyed eating them and will finish the bag, I may buy another bag because they remind me so much of the other chips I loved 25 years ago. If you like the flavor profile that I described, you may want to go get a bag and give this limited edition flavor a try.

Your mention of chicken flavor reminded me of some chips I used to be able to buy at a kitchen store in our local mall. Store has long closed, and I have no idea if you can still get them anywhere. They were the best hot wing chip I've ever had. Very distinctive chicken flavor. They truly tasted very similar to a hot wing.

Pretty certain, yes. That particular store had an entire area with all of those products. It's been years but I do think I saw something about the chips being discontinued.

So I saw these today and grabbed only the voodoo. The chips are good, kettle cooked are the only way. In my opinion though, way too much salt and vinegar. To be fair, that taste (salt and vinegar) just doesn’t do it for me. My wife on the other hand thought they were great.

I guess the 2 above reviews make sense considering that voodoo are my all time #1, and pretty much any salt and vinegar chip is #2. No wonder I like them so much if that is the main flavor you are picking up.

Domilise's Shrimp with an Andygator. Although if you were at Domilise's, you'd probably have to settle for an Amber.
Or a Roast Beef from Parkway Bakery.

I just ate 10 chips of their Haunted Ghost Pepper. I've bought 5 of those Pacqui One Chip Challenge Carolina Reaper chips you speak of. I am going to try them with my cousins before the end of the year. They were $7 a chip for the one chip challenge. I am going to continue training with the Haunted Ghost Pepper.

I am going to try them with my cousins before the end of the year. They were $7 a chip for the one chip challenge. I am going to continue training with the Haunted Ghost Pepper.
BBL, I'll be curious if you or your cousins can finish one of the One Chip Challenge chips in one sitting. I got about half way through one and saved the second half for a few days before finishing it up.
Definitely not for the faint of heart crowd.

I need to get some squirt whip cream and some ice cream sandwiches at a minimum to help extinguish the fire if necessary before we try eating it. Probably some ice cold towels to use as compresses on the eyes too.

Pricey chip(s).
I had Ghost pepper sauce on a burger once. Was pretty hot, but I was expecting it to be a one bite and done.
Ate the whole burger.
Made me sign a waiver before I could order it.
Not sure if they made the sauce milder or I am getting used to hotter and hotter.

One $7 chip. May not be very good. It is a bit of a dare. At 51, I am trying to act like I'm 21. Also, I have this theory that the hot stuff will scare covid away or burn it to death quickly.

Do a search for the youtube video one chip challenge hot dang show. They held their fingers on the chip with gloves on and then rubbed the black from the chip under their eyes like war paint.

That's an interesting approach and may work well.

This is not recommended, I I had a guy give me some scotch bonnet pepper plants and some kind of pepper plant that looked like a little bonsai tree had small red jelly bean sized peppers growing out the top. I cleaned some of the scotch bonnets and had the seed pods drying on the window sill. A month later i took them and cleaned the seeds off to replant, and about an hour later, and there were a few hand washings in that time, I went to the bathroom. I would not have thought the dried pods would pack that much of a punch. Can not imagine if i had not washed my hands a couple of times prior.

The voodoo are great in my opinion, but I like salt and vinegar chips. They really remind me of the same flavor as the "All Dressed" ruffles that are so hard to find because they are supposed to be a Canadian flavor. basically a combo of bbq and salt and vinegar.

Today we went to Best Buy, looking at TV’s and surround systems. Only left with some batteries and these. I have to measure the area for the TV.
They are awful good, really a light corn chip (which we like) and good flavor.

I got a bag of the Zapp's Voodoo chips because they were free with an in store coupon. They were good and I agree with Free Mr. Tony on the flavor profile. Our daughter and I could taste a little ketchup or BBQ sauce flavor and the salt and vinegar flavor. Then my wife found them in the pantry. She said they were the best chips she's ever had and could eat them every day. Not long after she found them, I saw the bag in the trash. I had maybe 12 chips and our daughter had three or four. I probably won't get them often since I don't want Bonnie eating an entire bag in one sitting. That probably exceeds the suggested serving size.

I am very content with plain old Lays potato chips. I like them so much I had to quit buying them. All I would do is sit around and eat them while drinking beer. This was not helping my blood pressure or my weight.

Picked up all 3 last week. Only opened the chili mango. For me nothing special. Also tried the Deep fried dill pickle chips. I did like them better. We did really like the Jalapeno Ranch chips, but can't find them any more.

When I was a kid and into college, Jays Potato Chips were the bomb around NW Indiana. I think they went out of business in the 90's, sadly. One of my favorite chips now, that I buy with extreme moderation, is Utz Dark Russet Kettle Chips. Holy cow, if you like the toasted/slightly burnt taste of chips, they are like crack. They are sooooooooo goooood. :-D

Jay's was bought by one of the big companies and I think they still exist in the greater Chicago area. As for those dark russets, yes, they are good. Cape Cod makes some like that too. I used to love when Anheuser Busch had chips. Their dark russets were my all time fave as a teenager as was their snack mix.

Backers is made in Fulton, MO. Best chips I've ever had. I live about 40 miles from Fulton so you'd think they would be available in all the stores around me. It is a sturdy chip. A little thicker that regular Ruffles I think.
I will do a test run tonight.
Making Guacamole and Salsa to take to poker tonight.
Will take them along and try them and let you know tomorrow.
The only possible downside of using them with a dip that I see is the flavor of the chip possibly clashing with the flavor of the dip.
Looks like the have about a dozen different flavored double crunch chips, but did not see a regular flavor double crunch chip.
Not sure about a Catsup flavored chip though...

Tried them with the Guacamole and Salsa last night.
Held up well, none broke.
Not sure how stiff your clam dip is, but these would definitely hold up better than any regular chip.

Can't seem to find the Wendy's Spicy Chicken Pringles. I stopped at the little market for some sausages, and on my way to check out saw these. Have no opened them yet. But I have always liked Wise chips.

The chili mango wasn't the greatest for me and the jerk chicken didn't do much for me either. I think I still have the BLT ones.

The Lays garlic and cheese was a one time purchase for me. Crunch and spice rules, the rest don't do much for me.

I thought it was you, but I couldn't find the original post. I added a bit of salt, cilantro and lime juice. I was making guacamole and chicken quesadillas and tacos. Everything was at hand or on the cutting board so it was all about taste and adjust.

I worked in a chemical plant outside of this radius and the number one thing my coworkers requested from me was to bring in some Sterzing potato chips.

Looks like 25 different chips in the last year. Less than I had expected, but about a bag every other week. I could probably drop about 10# in a year if I quit eating potato chips. No wonder I gain weight every year.

We have a company like that where I grew up in Lexington, Ohio called Jones potato chips. The government did that ban on trans fats being in food and once the company they bought oil from stopped making the oil they made their chips in they stopped offering those chips rather then ruin the flavor. The original Jones chips were marcelled and they switched to wavy and ripple chips instead. Still good, but nothing like the old ones.

My body is odd in a lot of ways. I can eat plain chips any flavor, but if I eat wavy chips like ruffles or most any brand I end up with heartburn. I like them they just don't like me. Some hash browns are the same way, the little cubed one will do it also, no matter where I get them. But shredded or patties no issues.

Another local favorite chip In SE Iowa is Kitchen Cooked made in Farmington Ill. They are very similar to Sterzing's made In Burlington Iowa. People will argue over which chip is the best. I just seen where Kitchen Cooked was purchased by Utz in 2019 and more recently they announced they are closing the factory in Farmington and will move production to another factory. I wonder if the chips will remain the same? My vote for which is the best chip will go with Sterzings since they have remained a family business...Ill go with the small guy.

It is funny, I do not ever remember any "local" potato chips when we lived in California, from the 60's to the 21st Century. There was Frito-Lays, Laura Scudder's & Granny Goose. In the mid 70's Pringles came out. Nothing like you all are talking about.

Living most of my life in southern California, I can't possibly count how many of her chips I'd eaten over the years.

I like thick cut potato chips the best. The kind that you find freshly cooked in restaurants, that are still a little soft in the middle.
They are easy to make. I sliced russet potatoes using a mandoline slicer and deep fried in the oil left over from my taco breakfast.
The great thing about homemade is that you can make them the way you like them. You can use whatever spices you prefer, or like me, eat them plain with catsup.

Big couple of days cooking. After spending two days on smoked salmon, I smoked lamb chops. To add injury to my already tired self, I decided to make potato chips again.
This time I went through all the steps: slicing with a mandolin, soaking in ice water to remove the outer starch layer, drying and then frying in a pan.
I decided to add a red sweet potato to the mix. The chips turned out really good. I did some experimentation with how long to fry them. I like thick chips that are a little soft in the middle.
These turned out thinner than I thought. Since I was not submerging them in a deep fryer, they would curl and end up with both crispy and soft sections. This was what I was looking for.
The surprise was how much sweet potatoes shrank. Also, the sweet potato chips never got crisp in the pan. They crisped up while cooling.
I would have added some pictures of the cooking process, but my camera started shooting blurry pictures.

looking good, I like the brown chips when I find them in a bag. Have not done chips in many years. Growing up Woman would bust out the electric skillet and make chips, then they went in to a brown paper bag with some salt and give a gentle shaking.
Now I want to make chips, my Dr. won't be happy about that though.

Some of the sweet potato chips were lighter. I was working on how long to keep them in the oil since they were not crisping. I started pulling them earlier after I noticed the chips crisping while they cooled.
This was my first time with sweet potato's. They were definitely different to cook than the russets.
They are definitely too sweet for me. I am not a real sweet food eater. I will skip them in the future unless somebody asks for them. I just wanted to see how they would turn out.

A caveat to my comment is I can't remember the last time I made or had a Cubano. They tasted like dill pickle to me. But what is the over/under on percentage of people that have had a Cubano sandwich? Maybe 40%?

I did see those chips in the store. Didn't try them though.
The very first Cubano Sandwich I had was at a Jimmy Buffett restaurant in Delaware.
Apparently Margaritaville name was not available in Delaware so he named it Cheeseburger In Paradise.
My next door neighbor owned a couple Dunkin' Donut shops and was having one built and shared half of the building with Buffett.
He met Jimmy Buffett once, and said he didn't know who he was. Haha
Back to that sandwich, I fell in love with the sandwich, it was so good.
So I make my own on occasion.

Have tried several different ketchup chips never found one I thought was good enough that I would buy another bag of the same brand, Never seen Mustard chips that I can remember, I will have to look for them. The Hot Honey chips weren't bad, still prefer the red hots though and Gibble's Red Hots if I am buying and they are in the shelf. There are probably others but they are one of the only ones cooked in Lard or they used to be, have not had any in a while,
I like chips to much to buy them to often, they usually don't last but a day once I open a bag. The Doc tells me they are not good for me, not that much of anything is.

Got a bag of these for lunch at the Kroller Muller Museum in Otterlo. They tasted like smokey but not sweet BBQ chips in the USA. I liked them better than most BBQ flavored chips here.

Had no idea there were so many regional chips out there. I knew Tim's was local, had no idea they were not distributed further than they are. They are my go to chip (gave up chips with an occasional bag splurge) several years ago because of the excess carbs. My favorite is their salt and vinegar. They are definitely a PNW item.
