Title: Seasoning Cast Iron - Update #3. BEESWAX
Post by: Canadian John on March 21, 2022, 09:35:30 AM

In regard to the beeswax used to make cast iron seasoning pucks.

It was brought to my attention that there is beeswax on the market that is not pure. In fact, some of it is diluted with undesirable content. There may only be a small amount of beeswax in the product.

This is usually red flagged by a low price, the supplier offshore and lacking information on the packaging.

Locally sourced beeswax or that from a known apiary should guarantee authenticity.

Color and taste varies in honey and beeswax therefore color can't always be used to judge beeswax. It usually has a medium brown color.

The organic pure beeswax is $15 to $20 per pound here.  I use Buzzy for my black carbon now and I really like it.  I will make my own when it runs out.  All of my CI was seasoned with flaxseed oil and it’s still holding up.
