Are You Old or New School??
« on: November 15, 2017, 06:08:06 PM »

Being an "OLD GUY" in my seventies, I just can't help noticing all the new problems  Mostly WI- FI related. Is It just me or there others that simply enjoy COOKING ?  I do realize the hectic pace of the modern world drives people to time saving measures...  I

was lead to believe that cooking was supposed to be" a pleasurable experience"".. What say you.

I am 43 and work in an IT related field. Even if my Elite had Wi-Fi I wouldn't really use it.  I know basic times for everything and enjoy "setting it an forgetting it".

I am 43, work behind a computer all day long.  When I come home, I want nothing to do with computer related anything.  My gmg has wifi....I never use it.  I tried, but the process is part of what I enjoy about BBQ.  I would just prefer to walk out and check it.  It is good exercise since I have to do stairs every time.

I'm 54 and also in IT and work on a computer all day. I like the WIFI for overnight cooks so I can monitor that the grill hasn't flamed out. As the weather is getting colder in Northern Ill. I will probably use it more. It's a convenience for me, not a make or break deal on a grill. I hardly used it during the summer. My wife set it up for me. She won't let me touch the router or any setup on the home computers.

Sitting by the grill with a cold beer watching it turn a pork shoulder or Brisket into magic is therapy for me. When I can't cook, I do "temperature testing" on a nice day.  ;)

great thread.  I too am in IT and 43.  No wifi on my pit.  I enjoy the process, just cooking, probably enjoying an adult beverage in the process.  I hope that doesn't make me old school  ;D

I don’t know what school I’m in. I love the WiFi control and having a Fireboard for monitoring.

Add one more to the IT list.  My GMG has Wi-Fi, but I haven't hooked it up yet.  Being a retired chef I still cook by feal.  I do like the idea of the Wi-Fi for long cooks or smoking.  Once I had the mes box mostly full of cheese and I didn't notice the pellet tray caught fire and over heated the box.  Yup, melted cheese everywhere.  (I was using a mailbox mod.)  A remote with an alarm would have prevented me from dropping F bombs.

Even though I set it and forget it, I still enjoy hanging around the smoker with an adult beverage. WIFI ? for me I don't see the need...

I'm old (81) and old school but I enjoy using Wi-Fi, smart phones and have four computers. I built my first computer in 1962 and have never looked back.

I have a wireless thermometer I use to update me on food temps but really have no need for a WiFi controller. After the grill is to temp I leave it alone, let it work it’s magic.

At 66 put me in the old school camp.  My elite has Wi-Fi but I have never hooked it up,  and probably never will   seems like 1/2 to post here are Wi-Fi problems,  I don't need that in my life.

At 56 I bet most call me old school but I do my best to fake new school. Have a few gadgets but have to say I remember the learning curves as being shorter with other things, oh well, can't hurt to try anyway.
