  •  Some of us are sole users of the pit..For what reason(s) remains a mystery to me..Is it  that it gives the better half a break, too techincal for others to use, its location (outside), just a man thing or?

  • Bent probably does 90% of the cooking that is done on the pellet pit.  I think the main reason for that is that we most often use it when we are entertaining (we usually have family dinners for 8 about 3 times a month) and I am busy in the kitchen with the other cooking.

I think I will be giving the Pro more of a workout in the coming months because we are seriously considering competing at Fredericksburg, Va in May and my last comp was April 2013, so my chicken skills are non-existent.

  • I am the one that started it in my family. Had the small domed electric ones first, then got a masterbuilt one off a swap site for $40. it was a floor model from Lowe's and still had the tag on it it was only used once.

After about a year it was just too small for doing ribs and full briskets. My brother worked with a guy who's dad was selling them, GMG brand, and had a couple DBs left. My brother called and ask if I wanted one. I told him I would think about it. He went and bought it and assembled it without telling me.  He gave it to me for Christmas and then smoked two 14 lb briskets on it.

Well, went to Christmas mass that night after I had put them on before I left at around 9:30. Temp was set at around 190 as it was about zero out. Had the thermal blanket on it also.  Came home and things looked well, so I went to bed. Woke up at around 4 am want looked and the temp was crazy high at around 300 inside the smoker. It temp was around 210. Immediately pulled them off, foiled and covered in towel. Let them sit in the cooler for 8 hours. They really were not too bad. The outside thin part of the flat was a little dry but just put gravy on it and it was fine.

Called GMG up the next day and 3 days later I got a new controller that had the WiFi option, as the one I had was a non-WiFi model. Talk about service!! I have am going on year 3 with it and the only things I have done to it was add a second shelf and add the front shelf on it.

  • I do all the pellet cooking except when it comes to cooking a pizza. Then I turn the controls over to my bride. 8)

Tried to get by brother into pellet cooking. He's was to cheap to buy one & was OK with burning out gasser's every 2 years. Then he won a JB at a pellet head competition & hasn't cooked on anything else since!

  • If I do everything and I mean everything and tell my wife when to check on the meat while I’m working, she will check temp and pull the meat off the smoker. She will help clean up after I prep the meat which is nice but don’t asker her to learn how to use the smoker.

She does enjoy everything I cook!

  • My wife loves to cook. I just don't enjoy eating most of it.  ???.  Her idea of "done" is over done in most people's eyes.
So when it comes to the smokers, those are my domain.  She enjoys watching me because she knows I'm having a great time. She'll help with the sides, and getting other stuff ready.

  • I do all the smoking. My wife does help with the prep and cleanup.
She is also good at bringing a beer when I need one.
