Night Time Lighting
« on: January 20, 2018, 09:53:33 AM »

For those of us that are too stubborn to stop cooking during the Winter, the lack of daylight dictates the need for supplemental lighting.

-  What lighting method (s) do you use ?

-  What was the worst and the best ?

A magnetic-based lamp with a flexible arm helps.  You might need two.  They're about $25.

Many of the bases are rare earth magnets that begin to lose magnetic properties ~180°F, so you may want to try to mount it at a cooler spot.

I use this headlamp: http://www.one80light.com

What makes this one special is that it provides 180° of lighting so it does a brilliant job illuminating the space. Much better than the traditional headlamps.

How far does the light project?

I have a head lamp and a couple of the magnetic bendy types. Both work depending on what the meaning of 'work' is.

Very far. It’s great, it’s the best illuminator I’ve ever used. It’s my go to when I need a flashlight.

Sorry... how far is very far? I have a flashlight that will cast a brighter light under a street lamp and will light things up 100' away.
Forgive me if that reads snarky. I've looked at the light and the reviews/videos are most times conflicting. It 'appears' that the useful light only projects 10-15 feet. At the price point; I'll just use my el cheapo stuff.  :help:

My solution is not very romantic, so debated even sharing.  I have one 500 watt halogen spot light on either side of my deck directed at the deck.  It is almost like it is daytime when both are on.  My RT also has the built in light, which does not put out huge amounts, it does illuminate some of the corners of the grates where shadows from the lighting is created.  If I am at my mom's house cooking for her, it is not the same.  No lighting at all.  I usually use a flashlight or my smartphone flashlight.  I had one of those minor head light type devices, but seemed to have lost it.

I have a 4' led strip light fixture that I wired a plug onto and can mount it on my deck across from the smoker and when done smoking or light enough out and take it off and put in the basement.

I have 4 LED lights in the ceiling of my BBQ shack.   But we're retired and eat our big meal at about 2 in the afternoon and they don't get used that awful much.   But they really light it up if I'm prepping an overnighter.
