BBQ Rub Review - Holy Cow (Meat Church)
« on: January 12, 2018, 05:13:28 PM »

I figured that since there were a few sauce reviews I would try and throw a rub review out here so here goes...

1.  Name of product - Holy Cow BBQ Rub

2.  Purpose of the product – beef rub

3.  Pros and cons of product -
pros:  This is a rub that is high in black pepper (as seen in the picture).  The large amount of black pepper makes it a good match for beef.
cons:  This rub is different from a lot of other beef rubs that I have used as it has no sugar in the rub.  For those that like more of sweet/heat rub on their brisket this may not be a good match.

4.  My impression - This is my go to rub for brisket and I like it as well on steaks.  The rub creates a nice black bark on briskets that I smoke on the PG500.

5.  Would you recommend this product -  I can't say if I would recommend to anybody as it is black peppery (which I enjoy but others may not).  I enjoy this rub because it turns out a brisket flavor that I enjoy and is consistent with the flavor of brisket that I prefer at my favorite BBQ restaurant - Corkscrew in Spring, TX.

Thanks for the review.  Would I find this in any stores or would I have to order it?  Is the price point expensive, moderate or inexpensive?

I like lots of black pepper on meat.  Think I'd like that, but the girls might not.  But I'm going to look for it at our local meat market.

Thanks TB, appreciate the review.  Always looking for a new rub/sauce to try/make.  I have not seen Holy Cow in stores around me, will look on line.

Thanks for stepping into the pond and sharing a review.  Sounds like a winner for you.  Do you think this would only work on beef?

We have an Ace Hardware store that has it on the shelf but I use it a bunch for steaks and brisket so I buy it directly from Meat Church website.  It is $12 for the 1lb bag or $9 for the 10.5 oz shaker bottle (plus shipping).  I checked their site and they do appear to have a retail store locator so it is possible that it is on the shelf at a store near you.

There are some folks that have used it for chicken but I have not (I am a bit of a bbq nerd as my social media stuff includes various bbq cooks, pit mfgrs., rub and sauce companies - I believe that is where I saw that it was used on chicken.)

This is also my go-to rub for brisket and beef ribs, and sometimes give a steak or burgers a sprinkle too! Did great on a rib roast too and will be going on my next one.

Another thing that appeals to me is they offer very reasonable shipping rates and fast shipping.
