Cabela's CG-15 Vacuum Sealer
« on: February 18, 2018, 04:01:53 PM »

This is going to be a very short and sweet product Review.  I am pretty sure that this product in this review is not sold anymore.  I have had this unit since 2011.  Most Vac sealers are very simple.  You either take a premade bag or make one from your roll, insert the item to be vac sealed and seal it!  I am hoping by at least putting this product Review Up, folks can see a little higher end model, and it may spark questions that can be posed about it, or any Vacuume Sealer, this type or Chamber Sealers.

Pros:
It accepts a variety of different manufactures bags, both rolls and premade.
It will accept a 15 inch diameter bag.
It has 28.5 mb of vacuum pressure.
It has a manual seal feature.
It has adjustable sealing time for different mils of bags.
It will seal multiple bags without needing breaks to let unit cool.

Cons:
It does not handle liquids very well.
You have to hold down the top till the unit gets to a certain point in the vacuum process.

I see Cabela's has a new 15 inch for $449 with lifetime warranty and built in roll holder.  The Weston Pro 2300 is $387 and Amazon has some factory 2nds at around $260. I think if I was gonna spend $449, as cheap as I am, I might have to dig down and try and come up with the $250 difference for the VacMaster VP210 Chamber Vacuum Sealer...The only thing I would not like is the width of the bags that can be used!

that is the bad thing with the chamber sealers, I have a VP215 and a 10x13 bag is all that will fit in it.

Also I have not worked with mine enough to figure out how to seal something delicate like baked mac n cheese or baked goods. I use my worn out foodsaver for those. Been thinking about one of the 15" sealers like you have there.

I did bread pudding in mine, did not quite have that manual seal down on that one!

We have the same sealer. I have thought about something like the VP210. Then I seal a rack of ribs or a brisket flat

I've been wanting to get one of those.  I'll have to measure out 10x13 and see how that looks.  Going smaller is no problem tho, right?

no issues going smaller. Vacmaster had a sale a few months after I bought mine, I bought 1000 each 6x7,7x9, 8x12 and 10x13 I went cheap and bought the 3mil bags but next time may get a little thicker. I have only had 1 rack of ribs that put a hole in a bag.

What mil the 3 rolls in my picture are, I will have to go back to the order and see if it says!

Edit: I see mine were 4 mil...

I did about the same thing but did order the 4 mil in the 10x13 size. From here on it will be the 4 mil or maybe even the 5 mil. You can buy a box of bone guards pretty cheap for foods with sharp points. I got a box mainly for salmon pin bone protection. I pull the pin bones just before cooking rather than when filleting and packaging. The VP 215 does have it's limits but I am extremely happy with ours. I've had the foodsavers before and they are a pain in many ways by comparison and as pointed out liquids are a no go in that style sealer. One thing to keep in mind when buying a chamber sealer, sure they cost more up front but if you do a lot of sealing which we do the savings are in the bagging material. Roughly 1/10th the price of food saver bags and the seal is better IMHO.

Well guys, after a good 10 year run, it has not given up the ghost, but the CG-15 in not what it used to be.  I am going to be replacing it.  This unit has seen a lot of use, abuse and 3 moves.  I guess at $35/year it is hard to say it was not a bargain and did its job very well.  Now I have to bite my lip and look at shelling out $400+ to get something as good!

I had intended to buy one similar to the one you have and came across this on sale for either $100 or $120 on day and decided to give it a go.  This one has worked well for me.

They do have a 15" one too.  Reviews are not the best.  Not sure why it wouldn't perform as well as the 3 inch smaller unit.

You may want to look into the LEM brand too.  It looks like if you sign up and give them an email address they will give you a coupon code for 10% off.
