My new RT700- And first amateur question....

As I just posted... I finally did it!  RT700 ordered.  Should have it before the end of March....

Now the question.... What you all recommend starting with?  Personal preference type of thing or do you all think I should start with bacon as shown on RecTex "seasoning" video?   

Did any of you do anything to season it other than the required "burn in"?

I followed the RecTec procedure and used bacon to season it.

I just did the burn in, didn't worry about season. However, I burned it in one night, and the next AM I did prime rib for a work lunch so perhaps that could be considered seasoning. Either way that prime rib turned out awesome!

burned mine off for the 45 minutes the next day made burgers and chicken on it.

I’d do a pork butt (or 2  :) ) to experience a nice long cook and observe how the unit operates. Share some of that pulled pork with friends or coworkers and brag about that new grill. Love the horns!

Cook whatever you like!  :2cents: Ribs and pork butt are fairly easy, you can even start off with something different, like a pizza!

I think people use bacon because it coats everything in a bit of grease which will cut down on ash blowing around.

Hey Spartan, welcome to PF and to RT.  I have the older 680, and I followed the burn in instructions, and since I had bacon made some bacon half plain and the other half pig candy style.  My first official cook was the next day and did a few racks of spares.  Have fun with your new cooker, looking forward to reading about and seeing some of your great cooks.  Several of us are waiting to hear how the new controller works with these pits.  Looking forward to hearing some feedback.  Congrats!

Personally I've never been to concerned with seasoning a grill.  Burn it in to burn off any industrial oils,  then cook on it, it'll take care of itself...

If you really wanted,  you could paint the inside with vegetable oil, or bacon grease if you like. Let it run for a couple hours at 225F...  it'd be more than ready at that point

 Burn-in, then coat the grates lightly with oil with oil...   The grates will take a few cooks to be low to non stick.. Keep working at the grates; brush, wipe and oil. Then after a few cooks; brush and wipe.

Delivered today!  Ordered on March 15th.  So - two weeks.  Unfortunately, won't be able to assemble for a week or so.   >:( .  Will post pics once i get the bad boy put together!
