GMG reverting to solid drip tray ?
« on: April 23, 2018, 07:40:26 AM »

Word is, that GMG is now shipping new grills with a single piece drip tray.  Seen on Daniel Boone grills so far, but someone has said that the plan is to go back to the solid drip tray on all, including the Davy Crockett.  For a while, I've kinda felt that the two piece drip tray was one of the features that make their grill stand out from the rest.  Not sure if they will sell the two piece as a option or not. ( I think they used to sell the single piece as a optional accessory )

I just have the Davy Crockett, mine has the two piece drip tray , and I've really come to enjoy having it.  I feel that for things like burgers and chicken wings, that little extra heat coming up through the drip tray helps me cook at lower temperatures, and yet still get the meat cooked as if it was done at a little higher temp. I feel like this helps reduce grease fires , by allowing me to run a around 325F and still get pretty good results.

Anyway, I'm curious what others think about this move by GMG.

Huh, interesting.  I've got a love/hate relationship with it.  I do like it for cooking steaks, I can definitely get char and browning on the steaks.  However, to use it, you can't foil it...which has lead to grease fires with 6" of flame shooting out of the smokestack.  :)  Won't be trading it in tho.

I think it was an innovative design that showed some real user/world input as it really does a good job of allowing heat up while reducing hot spots when 'grilling'
It is a pain to go back and forth between using it and foil.
1 solid for smoking
1 perforated for grilling
May be the way to go

I've got a love/hate relationship with mine, too.  I bought it the same time I got the SS heat shield.  I have to watch and make sure it doesn't bounce open when I roll it from the barn onto the crushed granite.  The SS heat shield is well worth the price tho.

I'd love to have a one piece, I've never used my grill with the grates open.

I have an old one. One with the small toothpick holes that clog up very easily. I now grill on My Louisiana.

I've got a Davy Crockett and as of last week they said the 1-piece drip pans for the DC might be available in a couple of weeks.  Personally, I've had major heat/hot spots with the 2-piece drip pan resulting in more hate than love for my DC due to crispy and burning that occurs even at low heat (225).  My personal, untested, but common sense theory is that extreme hot air is still coming through the holes even though it is in the so-called "closed" position.  I've found foiling the upper drip pan and also using a 10x15 shallow baking pan under my food eliminates the hot spots and makes the DC a very even cooker.  I am looking forward to the new 1-piece pan.

A dealer sent these photos of changes to the Daniel Boone. I was hoping for a static heat shield that I didn't need to move around, and a bottom shelf. Man those legs look puny!
