  • So I'm in limbo of which grill to buy. I've considered traeger, CC (woodwind), and GMG. One complaint I've seen is temp fluctuation. People seem to find that getting a solid PID unit is the way to go. Now I'm thinking why not buy a pit boss at a lower price point and go ahead and purchase a smoke daddy full upgrade kit for around 250. I hate thinking I may spend $6-800 then plan to replace the controller on other brands. Then all you really did was buy a shell. I can do that at a lower price point with a pit boss. Thoughts?

  • I think buying a PID controller for temp swings when the original controller can keep it within 25 degrees(like the one on my PB820) is unnecessary. What I think is more important is that the average temp is held where you want it(mine does). I get plenty of light blue smoke, and what I smoke tastes great.

Now, if you you want to buy a PID to customize your cook, that's a different story.

  • I'm also looking at the Austin XL. It has their nicer controller on it.
