Who makes and who just sources their pellets?
« on: March 06, 2019, 10:59:38 PM »

I am curious, which companies make pellets as opposed to sourcing their pellets from other companies?

It seems like every grill manufacturer has a pellet line. I find it difficult to believe that they have all set up pellet making operations.

You often find that products trace back to a small number of manufacturers. Other companies may provide specs, but don't actually make the product.

In this way the contracting company can control the formula, materials and quality of the product even though they do not actually make it.

On the other side of the coin, many products can be the same but have different names slapped on the bag.

Cookinpellets.com makes their own pellets.  Chris is a member of this forum and has often answered questions on pellet production and how his are made.

That is an interesting question. Perhaps Chris may be able to shed some light on the matter in a diligent way.

Since the raw materials for pellets would be expensive to transport, and since the heating fuel pellet industry dwarfs pellets used for cooking, I believe it is a regional thing.  The few companies that I know that make their own are...

Cookinpellets
Great Lakes Renewable
Bear Mountain

I cant remember the company in South Indiana that used to manufacture a Bourbon Barrel, BLM I think...

I know Traeger just bought out the plant of my favorite pellet manufacturer that I have always bought locally.  Pacific Pellets based out of Redmond, Oregon sold the plant to them....It really bummed me out.  I could get a 20LB bag at my local grocery outlet for under 7 dollars.

As I used to say. If Traeger gave their pits away and were fueled exclusively with Traeger pellets, they would be making lots of $$$..You can bet the $7 bag will be close to 3x the price once the dust settles.

They sound like the ink jet printer of the pellet grill community. They make all their money on the ink.
