  • Hello all,

I spent part of my Summer 2017 rehabilitating my circa 1993 Traeger Pellet Grill, Model # BBQ100.  It had been given to us as a wedding present by my In-Laws, and, wow, has lasted as long as our marriage!

In late Spring of this year, my wife announced that she wanted to do more cooking on our Traeger.  So I took up the challenge, and decided to renovate our ole girl.

Here is a list of the improvements I did:

    (1)   Removed and replaced all the press board orange slats with new solid pine slats with close to the same color orange. Replaced all the screws, too!

    (2)   Painted the exterior metal with a high temperature black paint, also sanded away any rust spots on the metal.

    (3)   Removed the original 1993 3-speed Traeger Controller and replaced it with a newer Traeger Digital Controller.

    (4)   Installed a Traeger Dome Thermometer.

    (5)   Removed the old Traeger Baffle Pan that held lava rocks and replaced it with a stainless steel heat shield (from Mike Hurd of PelletGrillAccessories.com).

    (6)   Covered the cooking grill with GrillGrates (from GrillGrates.com).

And hopefully to do more Traeger Pellet Cooking during the cold, harsh Winters of Northern Maine, I built a Pergola for our Traeger, coloring parts of it with the same Traeger orange.

    Thanks for looking.

  • What a great first post!  Welcome from another Mainer. Are you talking Madawaska type northern Maine?
That's a nice rehab on the Traeger and I'm onboard with the covering. I have wanted the same thing, also on wheels, but I haven't been able to come up with a design that gets the bosses approval.   ;D

  • Thanks to all for your positive comments,

Northern Maine area . . . close to Patten, Maine.

The most difficult part of my BBQ100 upgrade was making the decision to CUT the wires from the original Traeger Controller to install the newer Digital Controller.  And then, what if the new Digital Controller wasn't compatible with what was already (originally) installed in my Traeger.  So I took a chance . . . and it all worked out, thankfully!

The Grill Grates seem to have eliminated the need for a tilted drip tray . . . but need to do more cooking to really determine this.

Also decided to use TWO grill covers to better protect my Traeger from the cold and snow that has yet to come.

Does anyone have a favorite pellet grill cookbook they would like to mention . . . my wife wants to know.

I met Smoker Pete some time ago and he introduced me to the GMG Davy Crockett as well as one of the best tri-tip cooks I have tasted.  He has years of experience in pellet cooking and I use his book often for a variety of reasons. His book can be found on Amazon under the name: Peter Jautaikis
