Change of Plans (but still cruising)
« on: October 08, 2023, 03:20:41 AM »

My wife Sally and I are currently on the Celebrity APEX. We left Greece on Friday for Israel. On Saturday morning they told us there was some unrest, things like that happen all the time, they were monitoring the situation. When things escalated they canceled our stops in Israel and we are now in Cyprus for 36 hours and we will have an extra day in Alexandria. If anyone has suggestions on what to see or do on short notice, please let me know. We are on our own in Cyprus since there was no time to arrange excursions on short notice.

Please pray for all involved in what is going on in Gaza and Isreal.

John, Thanks for posting the map. We are in fairly good shape for scrambling at the last minute. The group we are with (Educational Opportunities), set up all of our off ship excursions. While in Cyprus they did arrange for a shuttle to Limassol, but we are on our own from there. The same is true for tomorrow.

Today we were supposed to be at the Sea of Galilee, then a day in Jerusalem and another day in Bethlehem. Instead we are in Cyprus for 36 hours and will be going a day early to Alexandria. We will be back on track once we get to Egypt. From there we will tour Ephesus, Corinth, and Athens. We were lucky, I have heard of other groups stuck in Israel and other trips completely canceled.

What has been an inconvenience for me has drastically altered the lives of so many others. Tomorrow we are going to hear a presentation on the history of the conflict and find out more about what is happening now.

The changes keep coming. They just announced at dinner they are not going to Egypt. Looks like most of our time is going to be in Turkey and the Greek Isles.

Eventually I will do some food related posts about the trip!

We are home! The trip was not what we expected, but overall things did work out okay. From what I could tell it was business as usual in Turkey and Greece. The cruise line did a good job of making arrangements on the fly. It is hard to predict the future, but as of now it looks like European tours in and around the Mediterranean should be good to go.

Going through security and clearing customs wasn’t a problem for the most part. We were able to do a precheck-in for the airline and the ship. That seemed to help. The only real problem was when we came back into the United States. We flew into Washington DC and only had 1 1/2 hours from the time we landed until our plane took off for Detroit. After an 11-hour flight it was an additional 20 minutes before we could disembark, due to a medical emergency on board.

When we finally got off the plane, we discovered that the airport security computers had just come back online after being down for 45 minutes. That created a huge backlog of people to be screened. The line moved quickly and efficiently, but it took a long time to get through. Even though we were transferring planes, we still had to claim our baggage and transfer it to another conveyer for the plane going to Detroit. The bottom line was our luggage made the flight, but we did not.

United was good about making new flight arrangements for the next day, put us up at a nice hotel, and gave us food vouchers for dinner and breakfast. We arrived home a day late, but we made it. However, Sally discovered that she received an unexpected souvenir from the trip. She woke up in the morning and wasn’t feeling well. She tested positive for covid. I know there were some people diagnosed with it on the ship, but they were not giving out any numbers. So far, I seem to be okay but will see how things go over the next day or two.

Hope to download some pictures soon and post them. My old tracfone will only post one or two pictures at a time.

I am glad to hear that the trip went well and that you enjoyed yourselves.  Very much looking forward to the photos.  Do you post on Facebook?

Claire and I are still looking forward to our trip to Istanbul and then the cruise.  I know it is a very fluid environment so I am carefully monitoring the State Dept position on travel to Turkey and Greece.

Again thanks for the update

Glad you are back in the USA safe and sound and hope your wife gets well soon.

My mother in law is supposed to be going to Egypt in the next few weeks.  They haven't cancelled her tour yet.  I suspect (and hope for her safety) that it will be cancelled.

Shortly after my last post I got nailed by covid. Yesterday my fever went back to normal and today I think I can start to focus for a little bit. This was my first cruise, and it was all new to me. I hope the information is helpful and not redundant.

I will start by talking about the food on the ship. In short, there was an overabundance of it! My kind of place!! There were four main dining rooms that our group rotated going to each night. There were seven of us in our small group from Michigan and we stuck together for meals and tours. Altogether I think there were over 3,000 passengers on board and a crew of 1,200.

We had the classic meal and beverage package included as part of our tour. This got us into the buffet, the main dining rooms, coffee shop, and the pizza place that was open late. This was more than adequate for us. It covered all the pop, bottled water, basic beer, wine and liquor, with no limits. The beer selection included Michelob Lite and Heineken; a couple of red and white wine selections; and basic liquor drinks, Johnny Walker Red was the bar scotch. If you wanted a better wine selection, single malt scotch, or craft beer there was an upgrade package available. All tips were also included in the package.

Each morning the breakfast buffet menu was fairly standard with a variety of stations and baked goods. They had an English station which I enjoyed. My usual ended up being bangers, black blood pudding, English bacon (very similar to Canadian bacon), grilled tomatoes and sauteed mushrooms.

The buffet was also open for lunch and dinner and had a wide assortment of offerings. There was always Chinese, Mexican, burgers and a variety of chicken dishes. I thought having a carving station for roasted vegetables was a little over the top. It is hard to watch a grown man try to slice a rutabaga with flair and not laugh! I tried to stay away from the stuff we could get at home and try more dishes that were closer to the region we were in. I tried a variety of lot of lamb and duck dishes that were nice. For the most part the food on the buffet and in the dining rooms were enjoyable, but I felt it was kind of like eating at an "Olive Garden". The food was good, it just didn't seem as authentic as it could be. Which is to be expected if you are serving over 4,200 people three square meals a day.

The four main dining rooms had different themes, French, Mediterranean, American, and Italian. They worked out of a shared kitchen and each night there were common things that could be ordered in any dining room, along with exclusive items for each particular restaurant. There were also meals you could order for an upcharge or were covered in the exclusive meal and beverage package.

The first night there were three of us that ordered NY strip encrusted in filo dough. That was not what we received. No filo dough was the first giveaway that it was wrong! The waiter insisted it was what we ordered. We didn’t belabor the point, but It was just one mean, tough, NY strip. I will say it was cooked correctly and seasoned nicely. Just very chewy. They nightly menu went from NY Strip to flank steak as the trip progressed, so I stayed away from the beef, until the last night when they had aged prime rib. That was very good. I asked them how they aged it and the chef who came around to the table said it came that way. For heat and serve it tasted good!

The dessert menus were always outrageous. They served most of the classics Crem Brulle, Baked Alaska, Cheesecakes, Tortes, cakes etc. but with flair. The portions were small enough that you didn't feel guilty for ordering two or more. The dessert we had the most fun with was Mille Feuille, it was described as Millie Feuille Vanilla Caramel, Apricot Coulis, Apricot, Almond, Whipped Cream. The group decided it should be pronounced as Frilly Milly Filly, but it had to be said without sounding silly! Most of our group was easily entertained!

That's quite the rite-up.  By the sounds of it losing weight could have been a problem..  Too bad about the Covid experience. Could have been worse.

 Good to have you back!

On our last cruise to Hawaii, the beef was excellent but most of the seafood was quite lacking!  So I feel for you on the beef being below average!

I am not able to post pictures from my phone at all. I will try and figure out a way to get some up soon.

I have not posted anything on Facebook yet, but will start posting stuff soon. I will let you  know if it works better doing it than way. If it does you can search for John Messner, Evart MI and it should come up. I have no profile picture. Send me a pm if you want to be FB friends. I don't accept friend requests unless I can verify the person who sent the request.
