Looking to buy a pellet smoker soon for small cooks. Only 2 people. Which ones should I consider
-
I was faced with the same problem. I bought the Green Mountain Grill Davy Crockett and have been more than happy with my choice.
-
Can you define small with a sq. in. or dimensions size for members to help you...
-
Seems like for price, features and quality the Davy Crockett receives high marks. Wifi pellet grill for about $350.00 is pretty good.
You can also plug into a 12v cigarette lighter or regular outlet for power.

+3 on the Davy Crockett! One mean LiL cooker! Will do everything from smoking a couple Pork Butts to grillin some fantastic steaks. Come April I'll of had mine for 4 trouble free years!

Thanks all. I just ordered the GMG DC from Sams for $267 to my door. Figured I wouldnt find a cheaper option" to get my feet wet ".
-
Probably a true statement!
-
Not only is that a great price from Sams Club but it also comes with the cover, tote bag and 8 pounds of pellets. The cover and tote would cost 100 bucks.
-
Fantastic deal! My Sam's Club app is now telling me it's "out of stock online". But don't take that as gospel. Check for yourself if interested.

Are there any mods I should consider right from the get go.

My brother has a Davy Crockett and we cooked on it on a Colorado trip this last summer. I found his cooked too hot at the grate for the pizzas we cooked. Cool on top with crust burnt. The biggest issue was the pork butt I did. Burnt the bottom to the foil after it was wrapped. While I am one for bark, there was a layer of charcoal on the bottom. Anyone else have this issue? Wonder if a baking stone or an unglazed ceramic tile between the food bottom would distribute this heat more evenly. Sure works in an RV oven.
-
Never had anything burn that bad on the bottom. Did he have the heat shield slid over where the holes were exposed instead of blocked?

Good to know you don’t have issues. I honestly don’t know about the heat shield. I will look at it next time. Hopefully that was it!

I have a DC and love it. Does great with butts as well as steaks. I'm more likely to fire it up for steaks than my charcoal grill. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

I'm just glad I dind't see the $267 price at Sam's, or I'd have been once again tempted to buy a second Davy Crockett..
I wonder how many they sell when they do that at that price... as near as I know, they actually sell those about 5 or 6 times a year at similar pricing.
I don't know that Davy Crockett will do that great at searing a steak... but I do know it does great at burgers, bratts , chicken, ribs, and just about anything else that will fit inside it...
I absolutely love my Davy Crockett.... I'm seriously tempted to buy a second one each time I see them on sale... I'd use a second one to try and do 'smoke' flavor testing, cooking same food side by side on identical little grills...
Meanwhile... if a steak is thick enough, there's really no reason to sear... here's a big thick Tomahawk steak I cooked on my Davy Crockett

Is that grate sitting on your foiled potatoes?
-
Link in GMG thread shows them available again. ;)

How is it for grilling steaks or burgers with the sliding deflector plate? Does it work well? Are you able to get some char on there???

It works OK, But mine is one of the old style with the real small holes that clog easily. I have no experience with the new stainless driptrays with the larger holes.

No, those are just rolled up balls of tin foil... I was trying to get the steak up and away from the direct heat of the drip tray... I was really just trying to cook that 2.5" thick steak like a roast, and didn't really want it getting too much direct heat.
