OK, one vote only. This will run for one week and we will see how the members feel on which they prefer for the next potential member funded purchase.
-
I'm torn between 2.
I'm interested in the sous vide reviews but want to also see the vertical reviews.
-
Vertical smoker all the way!
-
May not matter but I would like to change my vote, vertical smoker please. We ordered an Anova, be here Tuesday.
-
Never seen the Pit Boss before
Checked it out and I guess it is similar to an FEC100 style - pretty neat!
-
I went vertical smoker also, would love to see the Pit Boss 5 series or higher done.
-
Vertical smoker for me also.
-
Just know that I pontificate out loud, so just take it as my usual ramblings...I am going to assume that everyone that voted has some type of pellet unit. So I am at a loss as to the attraction of why folks would want to see this? For those that what to see it reviewed, is there something you are thinking it will do that a "regular" pellet BBQ will not?
Also, I though the griddle would do better.
-
For the record, what 'type' of smoker are we referring to? I see that PB has gas, electric, and pellet fed.
I toyed with the idea of converting my WSM to a pellet unit but had too many questions about it working properly. Particularly the exhaust. SmokeDaddy came out with a 22" version a few years ago, and I don't see where they're even available now. Too many issues?
All things being equal, the vertical versions offer up a lot more space. My little Traeger can do a whole rack of St Louis ribs or 2 racks of bb's. It's biggest drawback is yer not going to get a 15lb bird in there without spatchcocking. I digress....
Regardless of choice, I'd like to see some serious attention given to heat distribution. I'm sure it can do low and slow all day/night long. But what about the higher temp sensitive cooks like pizza, breads, deserts, etc. As is, I just set my temp and cook/bake.
I won't be joining in but will watch closely.
-
I voted for the vertical smoker but would enjoy seeing any of the three reviewed. I say as the owner of the site you choose. I am in either which way it goes.

When I start paying, I can start choosing!
I would personally think that these vertical units are best used under 250° & I would think wont even hit 400°. That they are truly cabinet smokers, maybe I am not on the same page...

I am interested in how low it could get and stay lit as it may be great for jerky with that much capacity. Also interested in if will get to 350° on every shelf so that I could use if for wings too. It it did that and I won, I would probably have to get rid of the used Blazn as I am out of room on the patio without spending more $ to expand it.

My Masterbuilt pellet unit on smoke mode stays around 155-160 (but I've only used it in late fall/winter). It maxes at 350° and hit it on every shelf. Actually the middle shelves would be around 350° while the top and bottom would be more like 365-370°. The vertical units are fairly fascinating. I broke my unit in on a smoke with 100 pounds of turkey and about 50 pounds of ham. I was excited to be able to put that much on a pellet unit!

I am sure I will be severely chastised for the post in here I have already made, so why stop now. It appears there is a clear winner, is there a unit (Manufacture) that has already been determined somewhere else and a model and I just missed it?
-
FMT spotted a small Masterbuilt on sale at Menards for $400.

This will be a separate thread and discussion when this poll closes. Discipline must be enforced. >:(

I would take any of them as a review, I have an Anova, and Sous Vide Supreme, I use the sous Vide Supreme more often than the anova, as for griddle what are we talking just a plane stove top or, something like a blackstone or camp chef? I have one of the little 17" tabletop blackstone griddles, it works great I can't imagine how nice a larger unit from anyone would be. As for the vertical pellet, I think it would be great for jerky, and things like cased sausages, trail bologna, snack sticks, that was the reason I bought my propane vertical.
-
I would say any one but the griddle, I believe we had a Sizzle Q review done on the other site. Unless it would be a table top. Otherwise its all good!
-
and coming around turn two is the griddle making its push ;)
-
I would hope you all are considering major league griddle, a big a surface as possible, I am talking short order size...like you said, we did Sizzle Q, a great product...But I would hope you all are thinking something like this...Edit: Yeah, I change my mind!

Yep, if it is a griddle then I’ll definitely be in for one like that.

Hey, let's go all out like that Log Splitter! lol

I should have voted sous vide because I have the Camp Chef grill/griddle (propane) and 4 pellet grills. :-[
-
Edit: Yeah, I change my mind on the Griddle! Go Large or Go Home!
-
Now I am more interested in the griddle. Win either way but a guy could have a lot of fun with that thing.

If it is something like this change my vote to griddle. That would be cool.
-
The griddle discussion will most likely be Blackstone or Camp Chef. It will be like asking people which pit should I buy. ;D
I would think if these continue to go well that eventually we will get to each of the items in the current poll.
-
Weight for shipping needs to be kept in mind. It doesn't do any good to look at a $200-300 purchase if it is going to be $600 to ship.
-
I did not vote being I just got a 17" Blackstone model griddle and a vertical smoker would be way to big for me. I don't know what a sous vide is and what it is used for.
-
Would it be too much trouble to have the item raffled off before purchasing and having the item shipped to the winner for such a larger item. And have the winner do the testing as per Bentley's protocol within a reasonable amount of time. Killing 3 birds with 1 stone
1. Not having to ship to Bentley/Kristin
2. Not tying Bentley to do every test (unless you like doing it)
3. Not having to ship it out again to the winner

No I will continue doing these Product Review. I want some control over that and I don't know everyone, so I do not know if there might be bias I don't want the Site or Members to have to deal with.
Now having said that. An example I will give is the Uuni. We have a section for MEMBERS to do Product Reviews. We have had 2 Members do excellent Reviews (I guarantee there is no reason to do another Product Review of the TSM Cutting Board, Smoke or Fireboard). We had a Member on here that had a Uuni, I don't know how long, but I know they had it before YOU ALL bought the one to be Reviewed on this site. Why they choose to come on while I am out of the State and want to post video of how the unit operates I don't know. Why not just do a MEMBER Product Review? Maybe because they are time consuming and require some planning and thinking. What I did know is that made no sense to me, and looked like they were trying to interfere with a Review that was upcoming. They simply could have DONE a Product Review and if they had taken the time to follow the Protocol the site asks for like Bar-B-Lew and LowSlowJoe I am sure would have been very good and I would not have had to do the Uuni and we could have moved to another product.
I did not have access to a computer at the time, so my posting was quite limited at the time. I am sure I came across as quite blunt, which is neither here nor there to me...But I now get a chance to explain why I made those remarks and why I do not want "these" Member funded Product Reviews done by Members.
Hope that answers your question and also why I acted they away I did in regards to the Uuni Product Review!

We have no guarantee that, once someone has received a product at a fraction of what it would cost them to purchase that: (1) they would ever do a review; (2) they would do a review following the protocol or do a thorough review.
I know I sound harsh, but in my experience folks just don't take things as seriously when they haven't had to pay the full freight. That's why I am ok with a member review of a product which we have pre-approved and they have paid for. The member had to put some significant cash in to get a product and then has decided to invest more effort in the review which they do voluntarily, not because they are required to as the by-product of winning a drawing.
-
Both very good points. Just figured it might free up some work for you guys. I love the reviews. Just feel bad for all the work that goes in.
Thank you both for your efforts inbring this quality site.

Sure could use a vertical unit right now!

I voted griddle before reading the rest of the thread, and had no idea that griddles of that size were being sold. I was thinking "griddle" from days gone by when I was a kid. you know, lil' camping griddle with a grease channel around the outside edge.
Again, not the sharpest knife in the block!
-
The griddle is coming on strong.
-
Sorry, I have been slammed with 3 different volunteer organization functions. So, it seems as if the vertical smoker is the winner. I will now start a new thread for folks to say which vertical smoker they think should be selected.
-
I voted griddle since I built a vertical pellet grill some years back using an old Makers Mark Gasser vertical smoker and a Smoke Daddy hopper unit. Works great but temps from top to bottom vary widely.
