NCAA crew and softball (in no sense of order).
I'm not a fan of NCAA hoops, so I made this thread for some other worthy sports that don't get the coverage. College rowing, and women's softball. The two sports cross time lines with MM and get little mention. Fine.
I will 1st say that I'm a UW Husky fan. By all means, chime in with your collegiate favorite. No football please.
The Lady Huskies softball team is currently ranked #1 in the nation. 23-0 with 12 shutouts. The kicker is, half of the Pac 12 is rated in the top 20 <sigh>. In a couple more weeks, we'll start to consume each other in league play. Go Dawgs!
The Lady's crew also won the 2017 NCAA rowing championships with a sweep of the races (1st and only time any team has done it).
Rowing is the oldest US collegiate sport. Being I'm prejudiced in this matter, I will focus on one of the top programs and arenas in the world.
Its a long read/watch, but the Boys in the Boat fans might appreciate it:

i'm going to the NCAA hockey regional finals in 3 weeks...the winner of the game on that Sunday goes to the Frozen Four
-
Be honest with you, would rather watch softball or crew then BB...I just like to play the game...I will get lucky one of these years!

I'm a UP grad (Portland). We were a soccer school at the time (and still are to a large degree). Had two female Olympic gold medal winners in my class. Several players male and female went on to play professionally. Our cross country team was top 10 in the nation when I was there. I however ran track.
DK
PS UP Football is undefeated since 1949.

I am a University of Tampa alum. A Division II school, so not as much pub as DI schools, but UT does have very good soccer, baseball and women's volleyball programs. Several major league players came from UT. Now living up in the Northeast, have become a big Rutgers University fan. RU has a very good women's soccer program. I take my daughter to a couple of games a year. Great fun cheering on the local kids.

Since ESPN can't provide any updates in a reasonable time frame...
The Husky Classic was held over the weekend. The big matchup was #11 Alabama vs the #1 Huskies. Hindsight is kinda funny. Bama's pitcher was fawned over by the media. Could the Huskies handle the prowess of this pitcher and her deep resume'?
Game one ended in an 8-0 gobsmacking of the Tide when the 5th inning rule was called. Game 2 was another story. 4-1 Dawgs after 7 innings.
The Huskies are now at 23-0 on the season. Next weekend will end out of conference play and some serious reckoning will be in play.
The Pac 12 has 3 teams in the top 6 nationally (six in the top 20). I've no idea how Oregon gets ranked 6th nationally when they're 6th in the Pac 12. ::)
Come March 14th, there will be carnage till the end. This holds true for the SEC as well (and most other conferences).
PLAY BALL!
-
I've no idea how Oregon gets ranked 6th nationally when they're 6th in the Pac 12. ::)
I couldn't tell if you were joking on this or not?
Hopefully you were just joking but if not they are in a 9 way Tie for first in Pac 12 with all the other teams.0-0 ;D
Nationally Washington has player 2 ranked teams(6,11,11) but one twice so total of 3 games. Won all 3.
Oregon has played 7 ranked teams(6,7,11,13,13,15,18,25) but one twice so total of 8 games. Won 4 lost 4.
As you said in few weeks the fun will begin when they start taring each other up.
Again if you new this please disregard

I was speaking in terms of record, not conference schedule (as there is none yet).

Yup tied for first 0-0. They are 6th because of who they played.

After a game called this weekend due to rain (in Las Vegas?), the Lady Huskies are now 27-0. The last game was a nail biter as New Mexico State took it to the 10th inning before being outed.
Interesting note: Half of the Husky soft ballers are 5'-6" or less. Little lady's smacking the orb over the wall. Weird...
One more game before the slaughter begins in the divisions. The SEC and PAC12 are gonna eat themselves alive.
Crew is coming soon. More on that later.
Hope Y'all had a great weekend!

Well, it's Tuesday and the weekend reports are in. Not surprisingly, the SEC and ESPN keep ignoring the Pac. ::)
The Pac 12 gets 5 mentions in 50 articles, while the SEC gets 40. <sigh>
Half the top 10 at this time is owned by the Pac. :-X

As of today, the Lady Huskies are 35-2 with the last two weeks sweeps of their series. ESPN? The Pac 12 got 4 mentions in their last 100 articles.
The Huskies 2 losses came in Pac 12 play against then #10 AZ State. Last weekend the Dawgs swept #9 AZ, and this weekend unranked Stanford in conference play. Wednesday they face little known Seattle U, with the nations home run leader. Could I finally get to watch a game? :o
Then it's a long home stand of 6 games against Utah and Cal. It gets ugly after that with 3 at UCLA and 3 here with Oregon.

The above pic was taken from here, where the overflow crowds camp out on the football stadium concourses:

I want to think that after the run of 2009, the Huskies were determined to build a championship stadium. During that run, the Huskies spent 3 weeks on the road in going to the finals. It was a tough row to hoe. What was missing was the lights at the home field. There were none, thus no evening games.
The call went out for support, and lights were added the next year. Today, the stadium hosts regional and semis. WOOF!
-
I had to change my avatar to a more all encompassing one.
The Lady soft ballers are now 39-2 on the season. They have three Pac 12 sweeps in a row going into this weekend when the will play Cal at home.
Last weekend, Gabbie Plain (a freshman from OZ) threw the 7th perfect gave in UW softball history. The pollsters took notice and the Ladies garnered 32 of 33 1st place votes in the polls. The threshing will come soon.
Meanwhile, the little acknowledged sport of crew is heating up. Both the men's and women's teams are undefeated this year. Much like the softball schedule, this will be hard fought for the rowers. The Cal dual is typically the litmus test for both teams. Seldom does it make a difference at the end of year finals.
After that comes the Windermere Cup. This year the Dawgs welcome the Ladies Dutch National team who finished 6th in the world championships in 2017, and the 2016 in the Olympics. The men have a much harder battle ahead. They will face the Oxford Brooks team that has dominated Brit rowing for 3 years running. AND the University of British Columbia. The University of British Columbia men's crew won the Canadian University Rowing Championship for the third time in four years last spring.
More to come...

A bit of history on the Husky crew team and the late great Keith Jackson...

BIG weekend coming up!
The #1 Lady Ballers are at #3 UCLA for the weekend for a HUGE showdown. #4 Oregon took down #2 Oklahoma (back to back National champions) 5-0 last night and broke their 30 game winning streak. Next week the Ladies host #4 (for now) Oregon for another huge series.
Crew:
The Dawgs are in Cal for the annual Cal dual (men and women). The Husky women's team is #1 and Cal is #2. On the men's side, Cal is #1 and the Huskies are #3. Not sure how that werks as the men took 4 of 5 races at the IRA's last year. The 5th race (varsity 8 for the National title) was won by Yale by .069 seconds. Whatever... Both the men and women are undefeated this year. Then it's a week off before the Windermere cup.

The Windermere cup from the air:

And from the water. These guys are obviously Dartmouth fans, but you get the idea of the atmosphere the regatta creates. "It's like rowing in a stadium".

Big games on 27th, 28th & 29th
Oregon swept last weeks #3 UCLA earlier in the year and 5-0 #2 Oklahoma, now play #1 Washington.

-
The Bruins swept the Huskies last weekend so expect them to be ranked no higher than 4 tomorrow. Both teams played well however. As did the Ducks.
The crew teams lost both V8 races to Cal but won all the others.
Question for all the other conference watchers out there...
Does you conference have a tv network deal that requires you to pay jacked up cable rates in order to watch a few games? In order for me to get the Pac 12 network, I'd be looking at $125/mo. That's just crazy!
-
1  2  3
Hope we don't have to face them again.
mudflap
-
I knew it would get ugly, but this is over the top. The Dawgs are 0-6 in the last two weeks. This is why they play the games though. Battle tested at the end is good for the game. :pig:
-
The bad part, they will seed all PAC 12 in same area so SEC will get chance to get in for their TV deal....
Mudflap
-
I'm not sure that will happen. While I'm sure that the SEC will try to strangle the PAC, there's too much money involved to cut yer nose off. I'm not worried about that aspect as the PAC has far more entrants in the WCWS (history wise) than any other conference.
Windermere Cup is this weekend and the weather looks to be spectacular.
The Cup is an International event, but not up to many others due to the course. The finishing 500 meters is through the Montlake cut. The 'cut' is a channel that was made between Lake Washington and Lake Union in order to allow fishing and merchant vessels access to the Ballard Locks. It's simply not wide enough to allow more than 3 crews across. The locks allow vessels to get to Puget Sound from their fresh water harbors.
Sooo.. 3 teams a year get to race in the Cup. Typically a national team, one from the east coast, and a local team. In order to beat the best, you must become the best.
WOOF!
-
The racing is over for today. The men went undefeated, and the Ladies were short .25 seconds to the Dutch National team. All other boats were victorious.
All in all, a great day to be a Husky.
-
Correction:
The Ladies lost by 1.225 seconds to the Dutch natl. team (with 6 Olympians in the boat), and the Men beat Oxford by .457 seconds.

This video is 4 years old and is actually quite entertaining. Yes it's another rowing video ::). But it's unlike anything you see here in the US when it comes to rowing (barring the Head of the Charles). But the commentary is delightful as well as insightful. Maybe it's that OZ accent, but I love it. If ya got 20 minutes to spend, this is a great way to use it. Or perhaps it's just me...

Pac 12 Champions.
The ladies take 5 of 5, and the men 4 of 5. The only loss for the Huskies (men and women) was the novice v8 by about 1.5 seconds by the men.
Next up is the NCAA's and the IRA's. WOOF!

Congrats to Kentucky. They came out to play...
To many mistakes to overcome.
Hope they play better today. Came out to flat.
Hope the person behind the plate is more constant for both teams (duck runner was out). No mater which team was pitching they would get 2 different calls for same location during the same at bat. ???
Like before congrats to Kentucky.

I'd like to thank your city for hosting this event. It's a welcome change to the 'up north' venues on the east coast.
It's still 3 hours early for the west coast teams, but the Dawgs are on the water at 5 AM here at home anyways.
I read that the conditions were good but high humidity. That's something we don't have on this side of the country.
I'd like to see the championship races alternate between coasts, and a central location every 3rd year.
The WCWS held in OK is fine by me as it's central for all teams. They have a 1st class facility there and not so much an advantage (barring home field for the Sooners). But hey....

Congrats to the Ducks, I guess the Cats woke them up the other night...... ;)

Congratulations the Cal's Women rowers on claiming their 4th National title. They finished with a point total of 130 points, just 2 ahead of WA.
And to think that WA took them for the PAC 12 title a couple weeks ago is a testament to the rowing prowess of the west coast teams.
Cal - 1
WA - 2
TX - 3
Stanford - 4
As for the WCWS seeding; I'll never understand it... ::) Play the hand yer dealt! :pig:
It's been far to long for a PAC 12 National Softball title. Go PAC!
Then again, the IRA's are next weekend as well. So much drama...

I would say scared them....
I think that was just what they needed.
We will see early Thursday....

Hoo boy, here we go again.
Good game Ducks, but the Dawgs truly did impress.
Behind the pitching of Gabbie Plain (an Aussie Freshman), the Lady Dawgs blanked OK 2-0. In doing so, she had only one strikeout. That's what you call incredible ball placement, and a defense to back it up.
Mens crew starts way early tomorrow at o-dark 30 on the west coast.
Go Huskies!
-
Nice job by both teams. They both also blanked OK this year.... 5-0 & 2-0
Good luck and may the best team win game 4 rematch of the year....

Day 1 at the IRA's is over (for the most part).
The Huskies win all their races. All three 8's go to the semi's tomorrow, while the V4 advances directly to the finals on Sunday.
Cal also won all its races except the V4. Many other crews had faster times throughout the day than the Dawgs, so it will be interesting going forward.
Of note: The IRA's are not an NCAA sanctioned event, so none of the wins are reflected as such.
-
Good game DOGS...Hard to win the PAC 12 twice in same year....Hope to meet them again in finals..but they will have to go through UCLA.
mudflap
-
Apparently, my reading skills are suffering from old age. ::) The V4 raced again today.
1V8:
Wa
Brown
Cal
2V8:
Cal
WA
Princeton
3V8:
WA
Northeastern
Cal
V4:
WA
Cal
Drexel
All are fastest times for the day at this point.
Lady Dawg ballers 6-2 over the Lady Ducks. What a great game! After losing 0-3 at home to the Ducks, the Dawgs come through in the stretch.
Time to take a deep breath for all teams.
-
Another years is in the books for the IRA's.
Yale again takes home the National title (2 in a row), and the Huskies another Ten Eyck title (team points) in a weather shortened race schedule. The Trophy is the 9th for the Dawgs in the last 10 years.
1V8 - Yale, WA, Cal.
2V8 - WA, Cal, Yale.
3V8 - WA, Cal, Harvard.
V4 was not raced due to conditions.
Now it's all up to the Lady soft ballers. UW vs OK (again) in a couple hours. Should they lose out at this point, it's stiil a tie for 3rd in the nation.
Go Huskies!
-
Confusing, I watched about 5 pitches last night or the night before of UCLA and I cant for the life of me think of the other squad...was a college I most certainly knew (maybe it was OK). I swear they made it sound like that other teams was going to win the WS...that night, so I defiantly heard what I wanted to I guess.
Some brutal "risers" thrown by underhand pitchers!
-
Great game 1. Another pitchers duel. What a double play by the FS 3rd base in 7th inning. Still hopping for PAC 12s 24th championship. Back to work Tuesday so wont get to watch the games...

Beavers DESERVED to win.
Being a Hog fan it was tough to watch even the first game.
Only reason Hogs won it was walks, hit batters, and errors.
When they blew catching the foul ball in game two, I said to the wife, "that's it".
"Here comes a HR". Sure enough.
I then said, there's no way they can win game 3 with that kind of momentum.
Congratulations!

Hats off to the Beavers. Die fighting!
The Henley Royal Regatta got under way yesterday. The Husky men and Ladies both scored open water victories. :pig:
One thing I didn't know... Due to rules governing the Temple Challenge Cup (no rowers may have ever medaled at Under-23 World Championships), the Husky men's crew featured just one member of the UW varsity eight that took second at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta last month, and the rest of the eight was comprised of oarsmen who had rowed in the second and third varsity eights at IRAs.
One rower outta 8 and they win by open water from the 100 meter mark? That's impressive, and it's a testament to UW rowing.
More to come...
-
And the Husky V8 men take home the Temple Challenge Cup! The boat comprised of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd V8 rowers CRUSHED the Henley Royal Regatta record by 5 seconds. :o
Well rowed Huskies!!!
