Title: Pellet Fan Membership
Post by: okie smokie on May 10, 2018, 09:26:13 AM
How many subscribers do we have now?  Seems like much fewer than before the exodus from PH, and the number of new threads seems small lately. ? ???

At the bottom of the home page you can see the stats. It looks like we have 868 members currently. Pelletheads had thousands. Like most forums, there is a small percentage of active users. A small percentage of 868 doesn't translate to alot of activity.

I'm shocked that there is as much as there is at this stage in the game. They also wanted to reign in the off topic posts, which slows things down as well. When it was super active, there was alot of random posts. I think they wanted more relevant posts to the forum's main niche.

Up until this week, I had been traveling for work 7 of the 8 prior weeks and had not thoughts about BBQing so my post counts were down.  That will pick up in May and then probably drop when I start to travel again in June/July.  I can't wait until this system implementation is finished.

We may be getting close to the saturation point..

All of the above.  When folks have something to share, they seem to share it.  But probably 90% are here just to read or be entertained.  If everyone who is a member posted one topic a month, there would be so much content you probably would have a hard time reading it all.  But most are not contributors.

There are many ways folks can add content -- do a review of a product, gadget, accessory. We have some great ones already that provide a good template.  It also gives members a different perspective.

Do a review of a sauce, marinade or rub.  These should be easy-peasy because it is your taste, not as if you are going into the wide world and having to survey folks.

But always something of a puzzle -- many avenues to share and a very welcoming and appreciative audience, but few participants.

Yes Kristin, as with all clubs, organizations etc, there are just a few "regulars" who manage to keep the ball rolling... I am proud to be a member of Pellet Fan and try to help out.. For anyone that hasn't posted, give it a try - we don't bite.

Whoops!  I have not looked at the bottom of the Home page in some time.  Forgot.  Sorry for the dumb question. I try to encourage pellet smokers to my friends who grill and tell them about PF.   :-[

My guess would be between 5-7%.  The site seems to cruise along, most want to read.  As CJ said, at some point saturation takes place and you have seen everything on the site.

I have things like Pmillen's 2 sets of gloves he sent and the Duck Fat spray in a can to review...Plus I have the Camp Chef SX sitting in the shed.  Just have no time right now to get to them.  I am assuming folks want to see a review of something, but again, cant get to the stuff I have.  Soon it will be so hot and muggy I will have more time, and we will get to a few of these things.

Till then, I hope when someone has something to say or post that is relevant to the site they will!  We do try and direct the site in a direction, I don't want it to turn into general BBQ forum as that is not what I am into, but I think we have been fairly lenient on post!

And to be quite frank, some Members chose a path where they do not have access to the site like they used to, so they are not posting.  And that in turn may have upset others and they may have left!  C'est la Vie!

And I think another reason hits are down.  I found out folks were signing up and sending unsolicited PM's to Members and that has been dealt with.

I am happy with the site...so we all know what that means!

Like most forums, there is a small percentage of active users. A small percentage of 868 doesn't translate to alot of activity.

Is there a minimum number of posts required before you can post pictures? I've tried a couple of times in the past to attach a picture but it wouldn't work so I didn't post.

Try this thread my friend: https://pelletfan.com/index.php?topic=160.0

I post pictures right off my iPhone.

Have not posted much lately and have not done much cooking.  Been working lots and pretty tired by the time I get home.
More to come this summer.

My new Rec Tec Stampede should arrive in a couple weeks or so.  In the months since I ordered it, I've stockpiled meat in my deep freezer and I've studied many of these threads and bookmarked several.  So, by the end of this month I'll have a new pellet grill and a freezer full of meat to discuss.
I plan on being extremely active in the Rec Tec threads, the "recipe section", "how I cook", and certainly the "Food Related" and picture sections.
BBQ is a passion of mine so I can't wait to document my upcoming experiences and continue seeking guidance from the group!

I belong to some facebook groups related to pellet grills... and they seem to have slowed down a bit too.   Not sure if it's because warmer weather has arrived and people are actually out doing things , or what.

I for one haven't been cooking a lot lately and when I have it's been same old stuff. Hard to find a new take on "Look I cooked another chicken breast."

I am a generally quite person anyway. In addition to that SWIMBO and I have been on a diet for the past 8 months (seems more like years), so we haven't been having much off of the PG500. A few quick grilling sessions and a couple of cooks of pepper stout beef, so not too much to report for me.
I do come to the site multiple times most days, and I respond to almost all of the polls. I typically don't throw out my .02¢  if it the same point of view that many others have put out there before me. Considering I learned most of smoking skills from all of you it isn't often that I have a unique perspective.

I am thinking it is related to the time of the year, change in weather, etc.  I myself have been working longer hours and in my spare time trying to catch fish in the California aqueduct.  Caught a baby striper today.  Love this forum and the people on it, wish I had more to contribute.

I think it’s that time of year, especially if you have kids or grandkids. Just this weekend alone had a dance recital, piano recital, two graduation parties, a school party to take daughter to 30 mins away. Plus had to squeeze in church, mowing, and hauling a load to city clean up days. I haven’t used my Memphis for anything longer than a quick grilled burger or chicken breast for close to a month.

I'm off on my yearly hiatus to the NW where I have no grill. I'll continue to monitor the site and respond if appropriate, but my post will be substantially reduced for the next 3-4 months. I'll be back in the fall.

I simply have to much yard and wood cutting chores to do at this time of year!  I have pmillens items to review and that Camp Chef SG sitting in the shed...and I have no idea when I will get to them.  I guess when the RH just becomes to oppressive!

I am surprised the site is as active as it is!

Why not have a portable grill with you? Logistics? No access to pellets?

An other reason for  less members, PF vs PH, maybe the reliability and development of pellet pits. They have come a long way since inception.  Controllers: 3 position, digital with wild temp swings and finally

PID and more refined digital...   Open flame cooking option.... Igniters... More heavy duty construction (most premium pits)... Premium finishes and materials, all led to more trouble free/reliable pits....

Some of us remember the early Traegers with all their problems, that for the most part have been resolved, or there is some sort of a fix thanks for those desperate people that wanted something better...The

pits of today are plug and go with the exception of a few.  This has cut down the end user development, where we needed to share our experiences and frustrations with others.

That in my mind that attributes to PF having fewer members than PH... Pellet pits are far more commonplace and accepted now than they were 6 -8 years ago. And that lessens the demand for answers.

PH gets about 5 posts per week nowadays it seems.  Not too far from extinction.

If anyone has something on PH that they want to save, you may wish to take action in the near future.  Bentley got a message from Host Gator saying that PH was paid through August 18 and not after that.  Since the new owner seems to have disappeared, we don't know if this means PH will disappear after August 18 or not.

I wish you guys could get the performance tests that Bentley did off of there.  It would be a nice resource for this site.

Virtually all of them were obsolete!  It would be like going to look at a Performance Test of a computer from 2010!  Why?

We had 868 members when this thread started 6 weeks ago.  Now we have 945 so that sounds like excellent growth to me.  Pellet grills are catching on in the US and this site provides a place for owners of any brand to learn and share experience.  That sounds like a recipe for success for Pellet Fan.  Active participation on any forum is inconsistent because our lives are inconsistent.  As to the improved reliability of pellet grills being a factor in few posts here I rather doubt that.  Weber grills have been around forever and there's a lively forum for those folks.

As long as folks feel welcome here and are treated with civility then Pellet Fan will flourish.
That is excellent progress!  I will direct my friends who are interested in pellet grills to this site. Best place to learn "how to".

1st, why would Bentley get a notice of that?

2nd, I've been checking in over there just to monitor things. I'd be surprised if there's more than a dozen posters there this year. I think I've seen 3 new members added in that time frame. PH can go days without anyone posting, and most newby questions seem to go unanswered. Most on line today is 26 (same as here), but the talk here is well beyond what it is at PH. There's 1 post today, and you have to go back to the 22nd for the next previous post. That's an entire weekend of no posts at all. 1 post in 4 days.

Looks to me like the new owner got in way over his head, and the marketing firm he hired left a lot to be desired. Nothing bodes well for PH in my opinion. It appears to be a sinking ship.

When it's gone for good, I'd expect a flurry of new activity here.

Good question.  I have tried for the last year to be removed, HostGator wont do it since I am not the owner!  The "owner" does not answer his emails, he is long gone anyway.  I get emails every week with member names and passwords, I just use them to log on since the leader of the Hitler Youth banned me several months ago!  I have tried to get away from it for months and no one is home!  It will all be over in a few months, so I guess it is a moot point!
