Title: Do pellets expire?
Post by: ArborAgent on May 30, 2019, 12:49:11 AM
Do pellets have a shelf life?

I have a few bags of pellets I haven't used in a year, I'm wondering if I should be worried about them or not. They look fine, they've been stored in a plastic outdoor cabinet with no exposure to water. They appear the same consistency as always.

I figure if the pellets had swollen or fallen apart I'd throw them away.

Anyone have any thoughts?

You pretty much answered it your self, if they look swollen or fell apart discard. If they look the same as new pellets I would use them. You may want to sift the bag of fines just in case there are more then normal.

I have pellets from 3-4 years ago when I first started buying in bulk and was buying all the different varieties to see if there was any flavor profile difference.    I’m slowly using them up, and have seen no difference in performance.     I think as long as they are kept dry they will last indefinitely.

I emailed Cookin Pellets and they were quick to respond:

The pellets do not expire.  As long as they are kept dry and out of direct sunlight they will last forever.  Keep Smok'n!

The longest I have had and used was 4 years.  They were kept dry and in a place where the humidity was about 50%.

Pellets can't expire. They are made of trees that have already expired.

Recently, a guy in a Facebook group I belong to was saying how he found Lumberjack pellets for $5/20lb bags and bought a whole bunch.   Another guy who works for one of the most popular pellet grill makers around came on and told the guy he should use them quickly that they don't last much more than a year.    Funny,  I've got pellets that are probably 6 years old and still work just fine.

The only time I ever had a pellet go bad, was when it was left out in a area that at times received direct sunlight and yet other times was in the shade.  Condensation occurred within the plastic container they were in, the pellets started to fall apart when they had made contact with the condensation.
