Title: How Did You Choose Your Handle?
Post by: Canadian John on July 18, 2019, 08:19:37 AM

Or user name.. I find some  of them interesting to say the least..For me, " Canadian John " evolved many years ago @ a national sales and service meeting. I was called Canadian John to distinguish me from

some of the others by one of our reps who was from Alabama. He called me that for many years after..

 Care to comment?

DK, first and last initials.

117, call sign for a video game I played 18 years ago.  DK117 stuck.  Can't even call myself a gamer anymore as I haven't turned my Xbox on in a year and then a year prior to that.    Don't get me wrong, there's some amazing games out there these days, I just don't have the time.  I imagine when us Gen Xers get to retirement age, you'll see a spike in aged gamers.

Mudflap= It was what senior operators called new hires in the Paper mill I work at when I transferred into in 1995. Not politically correct anymore. So when I joined the pellet cooking world I was a newbie and didn't think it was taken...

Mine goes back years ago when my wife and I first had a "shared" email address, I think it was on AOL.  We both really like to cook so "cooking" was the start.  My name is Joe and my wife is June so the next part had to be "jnj" so it all comes out as cookingjnj.  I actually use this as my user name on most sites I have joined.  Besides cooking the other hobby I love is riding my road bicycle (although have not been on it much lately), hence my Avatar.

For 26 years I was a heating/cooling & plumbing contractor.
York equipment was the line we carried, one time a new customer told me when I asked them how they found me that their friend recommended us but she did not know my name just the company name and she said just ask for the "Yorkdude". It just kind of stuck from there on out, in fact that was the plate on my service truck when I was out in the field, later transferred to our car for several years.

Not their best or even one of my favorites, but the one that sounded most like a "handle".

One friend, not even a close friend, in high school called me by the name I use as my handle for the last couple months of high school. No one else ever did and I never saw him after graduation, but I kind of liked the name and decided to use it as my internet handle from then on.

I had a few friends in high school that called me RanRoc. We hung out with a guy named Eric but we called him E-Roc. I guess people started transferring that “roc” part over to my name as well. It just stuck.

A long long time ago, the first time I had to pick a user name for the internet, I selected Hugh but it was taken, so just added the first three letters of my last name and, being inherently lazy, never thought to change it.

I used this name many years ago when I worked in the mountains running a backpacking program. This was pre internet days.

When I first tried to use it on the internet, spelling out David made it too long so I settled for the middle initial.

That should be enough of a clue for you to figure it out, if you have not already. And if not, check out the personal text under my avatar.

My dad was a cowboy most of his life.  A "brushpopper" is usually the lowest paid cowboy in the outfit who is sent into the heavy south Texas brush after a contrary old cow who doesn't want to cooperate.  They wear thick heavy leather leggings and a heavy Carhardt brush jacket to help with the mesquite and prickly pear thorns.  Daddy was the owner of the cattle company and also the lowest paid.  He took care of the hands better than himself financially and didn't want anyone to get hurt in the brush.  It was hot, dangerous and hard work.  We could hear the brush popping in the distance as he was roping the cow and dragging her out.  He could hardly rope anything if he was out in the open, but he was great at roping something in heavy brush.  I ended up in a career doing pretty much the same thing but I was on foot instead of horseback and I wasn't chasing cattle.  I think about him every time I see it on the screen.

Management of The Tony Kornheiser radio show out of DC at the time I chose the name made them release the Podcast of the show 24 hours after the actual radio broadcast. They were trying to drive traffic to the actual show where there was more money to be made from ad dollars.

This was during the Occupy Wall Street movement, and I honestly don't remember the connection with the screen name, but it had something to do with it.

People started a #FreeMrTony on Twitter trying to convince the "sales weasels" at the radio station to allow the release of the podcast on the same day as the broadcast.

Needless to say, the Tony Kornheiser Show is a big part of my life...

Joe is ... well there's a 'regular Joe'... but then there's also Frank Zappa's 3 part rock-opera called "Joe's Garage", where the main character in the story goes from being a guy playing guitar on a Fender Champ in his garage band(good wholesome fun), to the point where he is imprisoned for things that might be best left out of the discussion here.   The premise of the story is that Music, and virtually anything fun is made illegal , and follows Joe's life and various crazy things that happen along the way.  Not a story for the feint of heart , or offended by vulgarity, but I've always thought it was a very cleaver  ( perhaps one of Zappa's best ) piece of humorous and somewhat political satire.

So, LowSlowJoe, is just a regular Joe, trying to have fun doing BBQ Low and Slow...  hopefully they won't make , making BBQ and other pellet grilling types of activity illegal any time soon.

Actually I am not. Sports radio bores me to death, and I can't stand shows that take callers.  This show does not take callers, and is mainly just an old man complaining which appeals to me. Although he is known as the espn host of PTI, his podcast has very little to do with sports. It's kind of a mash up of sports and news, but mainly just personal stories told in a funny manner. He even reluctantly talks about sports saying he has to because it's nominally a sports show.

I've always let friendly dogs lick my face. When the family played computer games in the 80s/90s, the kids snarkily told me to use "dogbreath". Why not? No dogs at home now, but I have treats for any that come by on their walks. Any dog lifts my spirits.
