Looks like I may be headed to Nashville the last week of May to do some site seeing. Any recommendations for places to eat in Nashville? I am not sure if I will have a car rental yet or not. If so, it may only be for a day.
-
Our son lives in Murfreesboro which is about 45 mins south down I-24. Whenever we get to Nashville while visiting we always go to Jack’s Bar-B-Que on Broadway in the old downtown part with all the honky tonk bars.
-
While I'm no expert on Nashville, while we were there we had great meals at Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant, Woolworth on Fifth and a great meal served family style at Monell's.
Nashville Hot Chicken at Hattie B's.
Milk and Honey served up a pretty good breakfast
-
I had Jack's and Hattie B's on my list but not the others. Keep em coming. I will have 5 days there to eat and drink a few beers.
-
Nashville Hot Chicken at Hattie B's.
I ate there a number of years back the chicken was not bad.

I was supposed to go to Eastern TN and Nashville back in mid March which got derailed as the country basically shut down then. Was going to go in May and didn't go for the same reason I didn't go in March. Now, I am planning to go the week before Thanksgiving.
It is about an 8 hour drive from my house to Bristol which is where the trip basically starts - Bristol, Knoxville, Nashville, Jackson, Memphis, and then to the mother in law's in Clarksdale, MS for a few days and then drive back home to Eastern PA. There are a bunch of outdoor sites that I can see - historic markers, murals, etc.
There will be lots of driving, but like the Merediths, I need to get out of town too. The itinerary will be condensed from my original plans, but I will still get to see a lot. Nashville will get shortchanged the most, but I will get back there to see the museums at a later date.
My fingers are crossed that nothing crazy happens in the next 2.5 weeks that prevents me from getting out this time.
-
I have a coworker that visits her daughter in Nashville.
Every time she goes she raves about Edley's.
-
Gas is cheap and so are motels, good time to take a road trip!
-
Nashville Airport is interesting. I apparently look like Mick Fleetwood. I have been approached several times at airports, including once by a gaggle of TSA agents wondering if I was him.
I was at Nashville Airport a few years ago and heard a guy say on his cell phone that he just saw Mick Fleetwood while I walked by. I pushed my had down over my face after I heard him like I was trying to travel incognito.
I am 6'4" and I think Mick Fleetwood is 6'5". Pretty close there, but I am younger than he is and don't have a British accent. I will have to work on one. Also, I am a guitarist and not a drummer.
-
Unless there is something inside the Nashville Airport that is music history related and is before the security checkpoint, I will not be going to the airport.
-
Lew, if you going through New Mexico on your way to Nashville, I can point you in the direction of some nice sand to look at. ;D

When I lived in Denver area, I had a co-worker that was spittin' image of Paul McCartney.

I saw the sands of New Mexico 23 years ago when I drove from Memphis to Colorado Springs when I moved out there. My wife almost got stuck in New Mexico when she drove out due to them shutting down the highway for a snowstorm.

I have seen more musical instruments carried through Nashville airport than any other airport.

It has been a little over a year since I had originally planned to make this trip. Looks like it is finally going to happen near the end of April.
Quite a few things are out of business, temporarily closed, only open on reduced number of days or reduced hours, but there is still enough to make several days out of going.
Going to be a lot of driving over three weeks close to 2500 miles which is more than I probably drive in 6+ months.
Eastern PA to Knoxville and then onto Clarksdale, MS on the first two days.
Juke Joint Festival the back half of the 1st week in MS.
A long weekend in Memphis the end of the 2nd week.
Hit Jackson, TN Rockabilly Museum on drive from Memphis to Nashville.
3-4 days in Nashville
Stop in Johnson City TN on the way home
Finish the drive from TN to Eastern PA
-
Better you than me. I hate driving.
Used to drive almost 30,000 miles a year, just for work.

I used to drive about 35,000 miles a year just to drive back and forth to work. Been almost six years since that ended.
I feel like I am on a long music history field trip so I don't mind it too much. I don't like the drive there and the drive back because I usually don't split it up enough.
-
You know you are always welcome here to break up coming or going or both!

My wife had her gallbladder removed this past weekend (unplanned). Discharged on Sunday. Back to ER on Monday night. Went to pick her up yesterday and she had same issues she had when I took her in Monday night. Going to try again this afternoon. Hopefully, she can drive from PA to MS at least by when I am planning to go down there or this trip of mine will be cancelled again for the 4th time. Someone/Something just doesn't want me to visit Nashville. :(
-
Prayers for the Mrs. Maybe you would become addicted to the Nashville Hot and this is a sign?

Haha...I bought a quart of Sweet Baby Ray's Nashville Hot Wing Sauce a month or so ago at the Restaurant Depot. I plan to eat some at a few places while there.
Thanks for the prayers. She is now home and in her recliner resting. I picked up all of the meds and know the schedule of when to make sure she gets them.
-
So sorry about your wife Lew and will keep her in my prayers. With all the bad storms/tornados in the South and flooding in Nashville, maybe it worked out to delay a bit.

Thank you.
I am not scheduled to be in Nashville until the last week of April, but if I don't leave for the first part of my trip on April 10th I will probably cancel all of it as I am driving. Time will tell. She is probably going to miss out on all or some of a trip she had planned with 4 of her cousins to Hot Springs, AR next week.

Prayers for a speedy recovery for your wife
-
She went back into the hospital on Thursday morning. Hopefully, she gets discharged today. She is having issues with abdomen muscle cramps causing her more pain than she can handle. They appear to last for hours at a time. Time should heal the muscles and stop the spasms.
Thanks, urnmor.

Bar B Lew how is your wife’s recovery coming along? Hope all is well

It has come such a long way that she drove about 12 hours yesterday on her way to MS. She will get to see her 4 cousins for a few days as part of a trip to Hot Springs, AR that was planned. She is not 100% yet and probably will not be until near end of April.
I start my drive on Saturday assuming I have no complications from my 2nd Moderna shot on Thursday afternoon.
Thanks for asking.
-
I am happy to hear she is better and you will make your road trip

Last night was the kickoff of the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, MS. It was headlined by one of their own and Grammy Award winner 22 year old, Kingfish. He had Buddy Guy set him up to record his first album a few years ago and Buddy played a song on it with him and took him on tour in 2019. Here is a link to his site and he has a ton of videos on youtube for those that may be into guitar playing blues.

You are spending time in Nashville on the way home? Or have you already had some Hot? Is Clarksdale close enough to family you make day trips or do you stay there? are the crowds from all over or local? You are not far from the Trace.
-
My wife grew up in Clarksdale and my mother in law still lives here. We stay at her house when we come down here. I saw at least 20+ different state license plates here this weekend. People usually come from all over the world to visit this small town for this festival. This year, the international visitors were probably close to zero.
I am leaving here on Friday morning to spend Fri-Sun in Memphis and then Mon-Thur in Nashville. Staying in Johnson City on Friday and driving the rest of the way home next Saturday.
-
some great looking photos keep them coming
-
Bentley mentioned the Trace in part of this thread. I found this book today at Cathead and picked it up. It covers more than music. May be a worthwhile investment for those that want to travel along the Natchez Trace.

Lets get to the serious stuff...How is the food?
-
Three Notch'd Brewing Co - Roanoke, VA - best cheesesteak I have eaten that was not in Philly or Lehigh Valley PA
[ Invalid Attachment ]
Sweet P's BBQ - Knoxville, TN - brisket Philly cheesesteak was good but would have been better w/o cheese. Mac n cheese reminded me of my Dad's style which I liked especially the crusty cheese. Ribs were spareribs cooked Memphis style with rub added after cooking. Tender, but I prefer rub on before the cook.

Stone Pony Pizza - Clarksdale, MS - French Dip was very good
[ Invalid Attachment ]
Stone Pony Pizza - Clarksdale, MS - 1/2# burger that tasted like a Wendy's burger which I like so it was fine

-
Ground Zero Blues Club - Clarksdale, MS - great burger with more details in the burger thread
[ Invalid Attachment ]
Hooker Grocer and Eatery - Clarksdale, MS - 1/2# smashburger (claimed on menu) - decent burger but didn't taste like a smashburger due to the thickness. I don't think they smashed it but probably did cook on a griddle.

Blackhorse Brewery - Knoxville, TN - garlic crust everything pizza - pretty good late dinner

-
That all looks soooo good.
I'd gain 15 pounds if I went on that trip.
-
All of that food looks great. I'll be heading down to Roanoke, VA later this spring and I'll have to remember to try the beer at the brewery and the sandwich.
-

I went to the Stax Museum today too. It was incredible.
I've taken over 1700 pictures already and didn't even get to Nashville yet.
-
What is with the color of the chicken? The dredge just turns that color when it fries?
-

The darker color I think is due to it being spicier than most of the others. I saw a lot of other plates that were lighter in color.
-
Rock Bottom Brewery - Nashville, TN - Club sandwich

Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville - Nashville, TN - Cuban sandwich

Had my first Cuban sandwich at Jimmy Buffet's Cheeseburger In Paradise restaurant in Bear, DE.
Was hooked on them after that.
The Margaritaville name was already in use in DE.

I have been enjoying all of the pictures of the food you have been eating, however, I do have one question. Will you be contacting Roto-rooter to clean out your arteries when you return hoe. I am asking for a friend ;) :bbq:

I was thinking more along the lines of needing an extreme diet to lose the 15 pounds I would gain.
-
Was the Club a triple decker? If not, I can't abide by it being called a Club. :pig: And as silly as it sounds, to much meat so close together. I can't find the words to express what I am trying to say. Does it have bacon? The fries look very crisp!
-
Sandwich did have bacon. I got double ham and no turkey. There was only two slices of bread.

I've been taking my meds and walking more than normal. I don't think I have gained much if any weight as my shorts still fit the same. And, I have not been snacking much in the last 3 weeks like I would if I was at home.

Thick cheese sauce. Had to scoop the remainder out at the end after the macaroni was gone from the container.

Sun Records Diner - Nashville, TN - French Toast, Potatoes, and Bacon
French Toast was basically a sliced cinnamon bun with fruit and candied pecans...I didn't add any syrup and it was probably the best French Toast I have ever had.

I've taken over 3000 pics on this trip so far. If you desire to see them, send me a PM with your email address and I will add you to my Google folder that contains the pics.
I went to the Johnny Cash Museum and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum today.

Hope you don't have to take them to Walgreens to get developed. Hahahah, you'd go broke...

Sun Records Diner. So is it in the actual location, or part of the old studio. Or did they simply use the name?
Edit: Wait, you are in Memphis or Nashville?
-
I am in Nashville now. I think they are using the name, but it is right next door to the Johnny Cash Museum. Sun Records in Memphis has a very small cafe though.

It is amazing how many more pics one takes with digital cameras and phones versus old school film. It is also amazing how my phone takes way better pics than any film camera we ever had.

Skulls - Nashville, TN - interesting story here which attracted me to the place and it was a very short walk from the hotel

I thought that was a scallop! Menu is fairly concise, I like that. I saw no sides listed, did they not offer any? Or it is simply whatever the Chef thinks pairs well with the entrée?

Whatever the chef pairs with the main dish. It was mashed potatoes and some sauteed squash.

Quite the trip!!!
I wouldn't have the energy to do all that!
I'd find a Brew House with a BBQ and/or Pizza place next door and never leave.
-
Glad to report back that I did not gain any weight during my trip. It appears the extra steps from walking around Memphis and Nashville helped to keep off the extra pounds from the food and drinks
-
Good for you, I wouldn't be so lucky.
I can lose 3 lbs in 2 weeks, and it two days it's right back.
