Title: COVID-19 vaccine.
Post by: Bentley on May 08, 2020, 01:54:24 PM
I like to think we are a good cross section of America!  And I saw another poll and am curious if we are close to it.

I'd like to think that but I'm pretty sure our age is mostly 45-65 and we are 80% or more caucasian.  So we are a smaller section of the ol' American Pie!

I voted not sure at this time. I want to see how this all shakes out.
I have never gotten any vaccine other than the child hood ones and tetanus a few times if that is considered a vaccine?? I have not a clue.
My wife has to get a flu shot every year and she has for 11 years or so, in those 11 years I think we have both gotten the flu 3-4 times each?
When they separate the wheat from the schaff I will give it another look.

I will take the advice of my doctor. If he says I should get the vaccine, I will.

Why not?

I will take it when it is considered safe and effective. I am aware that the influenza vax is not very efficient. However, it has been shown that the incidence is less in the vaccinated, and although many people still get the flu it is less severe and mortality rate are diminished in the whole  population.  Also, the strains change so quickly that often the current vax does not match to current strain. Not a good thing,, but what else?

All vaccines go through a rigorous set of trials to determine if they are safe and if they do what they are designed to do. Once the powers to be say they effective, I will surly get a shot. I guess if someone thinks that this whole thing is a hoax, they should probably pass.

OK, well it was always my understanding that a vaccine could not come on and be released in the market until it was proven that it could work and was effective.  So with your clarification, you qualifier seems redundant to me.  I wasn't sure if you were saying that you needed to wait and see how it work once released on the general population.

At my age, I don't think that I have enough time left to wait for years of population data. I'm just going to have to trust that the before market vetting is adequate.  ::)

Bump!

Apparently, the COVID vaccine caused the death of some man in France.  IDK how that premise was proven.

His life insurance company refuses to pay.

Actually, a lot of insurance policies do cover suicide.  It is just that there is normally a one or two year waiting period after the policy goes into effect.  But this reasoning is so whacko that I can only say "Well, the French do seem to like to be different."

We have had all three of ours.

Email from Post Office said I could order 4 test kits twice.
So I ordered the 4 test kits and as soon as I completed the order it told me I could order 4 more right away.  Weird...
I tried to order 4 more and it told me I couldn't because I already had two orders.
Guess it counts the "2" I got back in January as 4.
That's the government for you...

That's odd about the test kits. I was able to place a second order as soon as it was announced. As for the vaccine I have had all 3 shots. My mother is in assisted living and I think I did it more for her safety than mine. And it seemed to work as I was heavily exposed to 2 people with covid back in December. I didn't catch it.

I have had all three shots and received four test kits with two test in each kit.  I've used two of the testand my wife used one. All negative. My wife had a retest done at the hospital which was also negative. There are discussions about a fourth shot which we will also get ASAP.

I think people are relying on the fact that they are vaccinated and feel they don't need a mask.

I didn't read the entire article.  I thought they were out of money for COVID stuff in the budget.  I met my out of pocket costs for the year with my Legionaire's Disease in February so I shouldn't have to pay for it.

Are folks planning on getting the fourth shot. It is probably less than 18 months since they started giving them, and now on a recommended second booster. Does anyone think there will be a fifth, sixth or even tenth shot needed in the future.

I have not gotten any of them, even after talking to my Dr. about it. I don't see him again until June I believe and will more than likely talk to him about all of the extra shots needed and get his input. As of now I am even more skeptical about their effectiveness.

Also curious if someone who had not had any of the shots, decided today to go get them would they need to get 3-4 or would the two shot dose be an updated version, eliminating the need for the 3rd or 4th?

I am not a doctor. I am only looking at it through my thought process. I am thankful that some of us had a choice in whether or not to get them. The mandate part and people losing jobs because they did not believe in them was completely wrong in my opinion and pretty much was just opening the door for more governmental control over businesses and the public.

+1, this is the way ;)

I'm not eligible for my second booster.   Yet I agree with this sentiment.   COVID as a crisis is over, we're going to need to learn to live with it.  Part of that includes a good portion of the population getting annual shots.  Just like the flu.

Ideally, at some point, they figure out how to merge flu into the covid shot so it is only one shot per year.

From my understanding Moderna is working on a combined one. It would be a covid booster, flu shot, and also it covers several things that they haven't been able to protect against previously that cause lots of upper respiratory issues.

Got me.  All I know is I got two pneumonia shots (3 months apart - PCV13 then PPSV63) about 6 years ago.
This booster (same PPSV63) is to be given 5-10 years after the other.

Was a glutton for punishment getting both at same time in same arm.  Arm is really sore.

After giving blood last week at the Red Cross, I found out my Blood was screened for Covid-19 anti-bodies. I had Covid in mid December. They told me this..."Reactive+ test result: Antibody levels were detected at levels high enough that your plasma may be used as convalescent plasma."

I learned that convalescent plasma is used to/for..."Convalescent plasma therapy uses blood from people who've recovered from an illness to help others recover.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given emergency authorization for convalescent plasma therapy with high antibody levels to treat COVID-19. It may be used for some hospitalized people ill with COVID-19 who are either early in their illness or who have weakened immune systems.

Blood donated by people who've recovered from COVID-19 has antibodies to the virus that causes it. The donated blood is processed to remove blood cells, leaving behind liquid (plasma) and antibodies. These can be given to people with COVID-19 to boost their ability to fight the virus.."

It has been 11 months since my 2nd shot and 7 months since I had Covid and still my anti-bodies are high enough to pass along.  I think I will pass on the booster shot!

I have had both boosters and give blood every eight weeks or so and I have never had this done at the place we go to.  It isn't the Red Cross but it is a blood and tissue center (our local blood bank).  I haven't had the virus though thankfully.  So did you give plasma or did they just screen the regular donation?

I gave what they call Power Red.  I started off many years ago giving whole blood.  Then, for about 15 years did apheresis.  They asked if I had the time to give this Power Red.  It may have been 90 minutes with paper work, but the draw was about 40 minutes.  I will let them explain it...

Power Red Donation
During a Power Red donation, you give a concentrated dose of red cells, the part of your blood used every day for those needing transfusions as part of their care. This type of donation uses an automated process that separates your red blood cells from the other blood components, and then safely and comfortably returns your plasma and platelets to you.

With just a little extra time at your appointment, you can donate more red cells and increase your impact on patients in need. Learn more about Power Red donations.
Who it helps: Red cells from a Power Red donation are typically given to trauma patients, newborns and emergency transfusions during birth, people with sickle cell anemia, and anyone suffering blood loss.

Time it takes: About 1.5 hours

Ideal blood types: O positive, O negative, A negative, and B negative

I stopped donating because I ran into a spell where the people drawing didn't know what they were doing.
Put the needle in, didn't hit the vein, so they started twisting the needle sideways to find the vein and cut into it.
Extremely painful and left a huge black and blue mark.
I finally said no more.
Oh yeah, I was working at a hospital.  ???

I feel your pain. When I give blood I tell them they have one chance to poke me. If they don't get it right the first time, I am out of there (and I will take a cookie with me)! Since I started telling them that I have not had an issue. Not sure if it is coincidence or not.

Thanks Bentley.  I'll show that to my wife since she is O positive.  I know they do apheresis at the blood bank, but I've never heard of a power red donation.  I had blood drawn at a doctor's appointment last week and they had a new girl, which had me worried.  Apparently it was not her first rodeo.  I watched her stick me and never felt it.  She didn't even leave a mark the next day.  I think that is the first time that has happened.
