Title: Vacation Food...
Post by: Bentley on February 06, 2022, 04:23:29 PM
Probably will be nothing to see till at least Tuesday night, maybe Wednesday.  We are having dinner at a Pub in Branson Tues (maybe good Fish N Chips), then a Chicken Fried Steak joint at Kendall's in Nobel, OK on Wednesday.  Wont post the average or mundane, unless they are spectacular bad!  Once we get to Pasadena you will get to see a South Pasadena Highlife Cheeseburger & Fried Zucchini, a Topps Chili Cheese fries and a Tommy's Chili Cheeseburger.  Alan aka ZCZ is coming in to join us on that Crawl!  I might even post a Wienerschnitzel Chili Dog and an IN n Out Double Double for those that have never seen one.  And for sure the #27 from Jack n the Box!

Weinerschnitzel's has the best chili cheese fries yet.  Now, there's not one within driving distance for me. >:(  Have a good crawl guys.

I had to look up Hi-Life Burgers. I don't think I have ever been there. The food looks good.

https://hilifeburgers.com/

Tommy's is always a favorite. I used to go the original Tommy's in LA when I was in graduate school at USC. Tommy's actually bought all of our chemistry glassware (beakers, flasks, etc.) when our new chemistry building was built in the 1980's.

All of our glassware had the Tommy's logo silkscreened on them. I should have bought some while I had the chance.

Der Wienerschnitzel (only old guys remember the Der) is definitely a cut below Tommy's. Actually, a large chasm would better describe it. Their chili is like liquid and their hotdogs like rubber. Still, I eat there a lot.

As far as In n Out, well, that's what a hamburger's all about. Plus, contrary to ratings I find on the web, I really like their fries.

If you like good Mexican food, try El Tepeyac Cafe https://www.eltepeyac.cafe/

The Hollenbeck Burrito is a classic. Or you can get the giant Manuel Special.

Folks would line up in the rain to eat there.

There is now one in La Mirada, which is bigger, but lacks the experience. I discovered the new location recently and had some food delivered.

We used to have a Der Wienerschnitzel back hear a few miles from where I lived as a kid.  It closed sometime in the 80s.  I didn't see one again until about 2000-2001 when I was living in Chula Vista.

Been to El Tepeyac a few times when we lived in La. Had the Hollenbeck a few times. I'll be honest I was not as impressed with it as I was with my local South Pasadena Mexican restaurant called Fiesta Grande that lost its lease and is no longer there.

It could have to do with posting using an admin account. Best IT practice is to only use admin privileges when performing actual admin functions.

This assumes that you were using admin since your names both have administrator below them.

It's a possibility.

1st night Golden Corral, some of the Best Sirloin I have had in years...no pictures.

OK, here we go, night 2.  This was Kristin's plate, but I had the Fish n Chips too, I jut had green beans instead of fries...I know, I know!  They were horrible, that artisy-fartsie lets cook they half way bs!

Said it was Pacific Cod, could have fooled me, batter sucked, soggy simply not cooked long enough, and water inside the coating, not a good sign.

Lunch in Pawhuska, OK at the Mercantile Exchange, this is the Pioneer Woman's place from Food Network.  A Cavate that they use Rib-eye for their CFS, Kristin ordered it....but a lifetime top 3.  I had the Short Rib quassidilla, very good but could have used more seasoning for me!

Dinner, Kendall's in Noble, OK.  As far as "traditional" CFS beef goes, the 2nd best I have had in 39 Years!  The kind of Green Beans I was hoping to get last night, cooked and with superb flavor!  Potatoes & gravy great!

Sadie's in East? Albuquerque, right off I-40.  Kristin's Taco salad, good, 2 cons for me is hot beef with lettuce.  I always make mine with room temperature GB, and we like a Catalina or Country French for dressing!

They had no traditional for me combo plates, so I went fish taco.  Very good, this was good cod!  Sopapilla were so so, to cold by end of meal to be good with the honey!  But I guess for many they are jut like a dinner roll or biscuit and are eaten with meal!

Sadies is good. I like their homemade potato chips.  Was disappointed when they closed their place that was in the Casino.
The one that is in their now (Casino owned) is not near as good.

Hot Tamales is very good too.

You should have said you were stopping in Albuquerque.
I could have made pizza for you and Kristen.

Visited there two years ago, and first thing noted was that parts were precut but all was assembled by hand. No automated setup noted.  Previously, someone on this or the old "heads" c/o scratches internally on his new 500.  I suspect it was due to the hand assembly as I watched the assembler work.  Actually a badge of honor that it is hand built.  Nice people. A bit slow to add new advances i.e. WiFi. True believers in "if it aint broke, etc".   Still intrigued by the 500.

In n Out Double Double.  It has been 4 years since I last had one. I have had a Freddy's and 4 Culvers in the last 6 months.  I can tell you In n Out wins hands down.  The rest are not even close!  I forgot how good they really are!  And I have a bum tooth that my old Fresno Dentist is going to look t tomorrow morning and they were still the best, even in pain!

I concur. I never tire of them!  Have come to prefer mine with raw onion. Used to prefer it “Animal Style” (fried onions and their special sauce). You should also try their Animal Style French fries before you head out and let us know what you think.

Had a great (but short) visit with you!!  Hope to catch you out east sometime when we go to visit our daughter in east TN.

I wanted to try In & Out when we went to Texas, but didn't have a chance. We had Whataburger and Jack in the Box in TX and Culvers in KY. Culvers was my favorite of the 3.

Looking at the burger I missed out. We have none of them close to me in PA, had a Steak n Shake but the closest one closed. It was not bad.

I went to In n Out today. I get the regular hamburgers. I don't really like cheeseburgers. I also like the often-disparaged fries. They cut the potatoes right in front of you.

I wanted another Double Double without a sore tooth, so we went back for lunch today too!  After your comment bout Bible verses on the products, I decided to look for them.  Our cheeseburger wrapper also had Nahum 1:7 on it.

I am no Bible scholar by any means, but over the course of my life, I have probably read it from beginning to end 5 or 6 times.  I would have bet my life there was no such Book as Nahum.  Had to get back to the computer to see that there is...Such a Philistine...

We were in Phoenix last night. We had been up since 5 and drove about 625 Mi that day so pretty tired. We tried to go to Nando's and it looked really popular and had an hour wait for dinner. Then tried Valle Luna and it also had a long wait. By that time it was seven and I just said no need to find someplace so someone in line recommended just a little Mexican restaurant down the street. Kind of a take out kind of place where you can also sit inside it wasn't bad but it wasn't the greatest Mexican food we have ever had

They have some wicked prickly pear bushes out there in West Texas.  All we have here are your basic green pear bushes and they are bad enough when you have to dig the thorns out of yourself after an encounter with one.  I've had to burn the thorns off of them on many occasions so cattle can get something green to eat this time of year.  Not a lot of food value in it but it keeps the cattle alive until spring.

. . . but I might be seeing them on my grill. Wonder how a bacon wrapped dog would be as a chili dog?
Hmmmm. Sounds kinda good.

Big Bend is a great National Park. I spent three days paddling Boquillas Canyon in an open canoe many years ago.

It was my wife and I in a canoe and two rafts.

Santa Elena Canyon has the best white water.

Did you get to Terlingua where the famous chili cookoff is? There wasn't much there when we visited.

You are close to Carlsbad Caverns. I have been there a few times. It is one of my favorite caves.

Have not done them in a while but we used to slice the hot dog length wise pull so strands from some string cheese put in the hot dog and wrap with the bacon. Then smoke or grill, I think we even deep fried them a few times.

Years ago a mexican guy had a street hot dog cart and he made bacon wrapped dogs in a wok type device, they were outstanding.

7,254 miles in 18 days.  That was the West Coast Final Tour.  I will NEVER drive across the Country again!

That is a lot of driving, too much for me. Glad you landed safely.

Those are some nice numbers, we did a close 4000 miles on our 10 day trip to Texas. I don't mind the driving if I am driving something comfortable. We rented a Grand Cherokee it was a nice ride, and would go very well with the flow of traffic, and had extra go for when you just wanted to get through and around all of the traffic and be in front by yourself. I wouldn't mind a west coast trip, not sure where I would go, the problem is if I am on a time frame, I usually can't see all of the things I want to see.

It is probably good being back home though, I know I was happy when we made it back.

Glad you made it back safely.
I think the longest I've driven was when we moved from Delaware to Texas, about 1460 miles.
Did that in 2 long days.

I usually end up putting driving 2000-3000 miles during my trips down South.  Sometimes a little more if I drive around the state of MS for a week.  Hope the two of you had a great time.

Had a very good time and got to see many friends I had not seen in a long time.  You just all may wish to caution any female relatives and friends traveling in California that the bathroom situation may be "fluid".  Went into the ladies room at In-n-Out.  Two stalls, I was in one and another person in another. I can hear a 3rd person come into restroom.  I open my stall door and standing face to face with a young 20 something male, who then just moved into the stall.

Given my age, I was convinced I had had a "senior moment" and walked into the men's room.  I was appalled at myself until I double checked the sign -- nope, I was in the women's.  Seems to be the reason so many places we saw in California have a one person, uni-sex restroom where you go in and just lock the door. That was not the case 9 years ago.

Cheaper to build/maintain only one restroom.

While on a business trip many years ago at LAX I was contemplating the problems of the day and inadvertently walked into the ladies' room which was very crowded, no one seemed to care, I apologized and left very embarrassed.

I've done that.  When I worked for Hughes Aircraft (Now Raytheon) in CA, the mens was always on the left on the floor I worked.
Had to go to a meeting one day on the floor above. Restrooms were reversed.
Without looking I went to where in my mind it was supposed to be.
As soon as I saw the couch in there I knew I wasn't in Kansas any more.
Made a hasty retreat and no one was the wiser.

I remember doing that at Hughes also. The restrooms were reversed at the bottom of different staircases. I wonder if we were at the same building.

I think the architect did that just for a chuckle.

They had multiple facilities.  I was at the one in Canoga Park, that was later changed to West Hills.
