Title: Superbowl Snacks
Post by: jdmessner on January 25, 2025, 12:51:56 PM
Thinking about what to make for the Superbowl that would represent each of the teams that are left. KC and BBQ, Buffalo and Wings, and Philly and cheese steak, are all no brainers. A Detroit style pizza would have been good, but that's another long sad story!

My problem is, what if Washington gets in. I can't think of a single signature dish from that area. Most things from Washington usually just leave a bad taste.

You could lean into the political ties to DC and do a red, white, and blue charcuterie board.

Maybe Dungeness crab (they're kind of red) and blue crab.
That would get pretty expensive.

Only food related item I could think of wold be Pork, it is in all the bills they pass.

Maybe Cat on a stick, for all the fat cats there.

A worldly smorgasbord as a tribute to all the countries around the world we just throw money at.

I do like the idea of pork for DC.  In the 1980's their offensive line was known as "the Hogs" and folks dressed as hogs at the game.

Or you could do a nod to an old DC institution, Ben's Chili Bowl, a DC icon since 1958.

I think you should go with a half-smoke for DC

Ben's half smoke is not to bad, the chili is reprehensible.

I've had neither.  I didn't get to try any when I was there over Thanksgiving weekend.

It looks like I didn't need to worry about a Washington snack after all!

I wonder if you have Tastykake snacks at any of your larger grocery store chains out there so you can have a Philly dessert.

Here are a few other ideas - https://www.visitphilly.com/articles/philadelphia/iconic-philadelphia-foods-must-have-philly-eats/#bonus-award-winning-food-drink-in-greater-philadelphia

Looking forward to what you end up with on the menu.

Love me some tastykakes!  My parents were both from Philly and we moved to CA when I was 5. Somehow, my mom found a place that sold Tastykakes and it was my favorite after school snack. Peanut Butter Kandy kakes!  Lost my sweet tooth, but still see them in the store and it makes me smile!  Great memories. I will have to buy them for my neighbors for the superbowl.

I had a few of these a few weeks back.  I wonder if I can find more.

Kandy Kakes were one of my favorites too!

I was out last year for a 90th Birthday (had a decent cheesesteak), but will be back for a wedding in Sept. I will definitely be looking for this!  Tastykake beer!  Can't imagine!  My brother and sister who will be with me will be amazed if I can find it!!!  Thanks Lew for sharing!

The last few years I have provided food during the Super Bowl for a youth group that I worked with. Last year it was the bacon shell tacos filled with Mac and Cheese. The year before it was the pizza taco (a 20" pizza for the shell, filled with massive amounts of taco ingredients). Even though I have moved a little over three hours away, I discovered it has become a tradition that I am not willing to let go of quite yet. It is a convenient excuse to see some good friends!

Given the two teams that are playing, it helped pare down the menu choices. This morning I stumbled upon what I think is a brilliant idea: Poutine!

I have 15 lbs. of steak fries in the freezer waiting to be used. I am thinking we could set up a serving line with: fries, choice of meat (pulled pork with KC BBQ, or steak, onions, and green pepper), with coleslaw or cheese sauce for toppings.

It would not be authentic, but it would be a bit different. Kids could mix and match however they would like, so it should be fun!

I guess pulled pork would be a bit cheaper than burnt ends which I think is closer to KC BBQ than pulled pork.  But, I am sure when I get to KC next time I will probably have some of both, some ribs, and some sausage if they have them.

Have fun and let us know what the final menu is and how the teens (and adults) enjoyed your creativity again.

I had thought about that, but back here in Eastern PA I think you can get a brisket cheaper per pound than a chuck roast.

Poutine without curd and brown gravy! Sacré Bleu!

Poutine without curd and brown gravy! Sacré Bleu!

I get your point, maybe a more accurate name would be "Faux Poutine"!

Cheese curds go with most everything and could be added very easily. I don't know how readily available they are in our area, I will need to price it out. I suppose Mozzarella balls could be an alternative.

I wasn't sure about the brown gravy going with pork, but it may be okay with the cheesesteak mixture. Since this is all build your own, I can put the gravy out as an option.

I had thought about that, but back here in Eastern PA I think you can get a brisket cheaper per pound than a chuck roast.

Here in CT Chuck Roast $4.99lb, Beef Brisket $8.99 lb.

The food was a huge hit. The menu ended up being: French Fries, KC BBQ pulled pork,  Gary's Quick Steak, onions and green peppers, cheese sauce, brown gravy, and mozzarella cheese as a substitute for cheese curds.

Since I only seem to be able to post two pictures at a time, here are a couple more. I didn't have time to get any pictures of the kids creations, but they had a lot of fun putting together some interesting combos!

Did anyone else do something for the game?

A quick follow up. The only things left over were some peppers and onions, the brown gravy, and about a half pound of steak. I ended up putting everything in the crockpot with the gravy and it made a great soup!
