Title: Question re Our Facebook Page
Post by: Kristin Meredith on March 18, 2025, 08:29:51 AM
It has been suggested that our facebook page be made private.  As I understand a private page, it can be located in a search and can also be viewed by the public.  However, the only people who can comment are folks who have been "approved".  If I have misunderstood this feature I would appreciate if someone could correct me.  It seems to me that this is a lot like the forum and how it works.

Once I make a page "private" I cannot change it back to public.  So I would like to get input from the members. We still have months before this site goes dark so I will leave the poll up for several days.  Thanks.

I think you have a good understanding Kristen. i belong to a couple private groups and I enjoy it because it does keep the vile posts and ads out. Much like PelletFan forum does.

Spend a minute or two looking at the posts for medical equipment, coffee cups, T-shirts, and the like in this telephone company retiree group,  https://www.facebook.com/groups/600530203348579 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/600530203348579), if you want to see what happens to a public group.

Kristin, to clarify, if it is made private, would the expectation be that someone would have to request to be added to the Facebook Page/Forum and that you would then approve and act as moderator to keep unwanted solicitations out of the Page/Forum?

That is my understanding.

When I made the golf cart shop facebook it was public and it was a 💩 show, and I mean it.
I disabled it as soon as it started happening, it was relentless and almost instantaneous.

That is correct. The moderators do need to screen anyone that wants to join the group and approve  before they can post to the group.
One thing I would like to add is a list of rules and regulations should be created also.

Yes private or the bots take over with all the stupid spam, you will still get them some even with private some how. Once one bot finds a public page and gets in they come one after another. All spammers and scammers, and if you report them to FB, they review and say it doesn't go against their policy. But they are slow to catch things at times.

I noticed when I joined there was no posting allowed, will that be changed?

That is what I hope to learn in the next couple of days.  It is a learning process for me and I have had a few other obligations the last couple of days, but I hope to return to this on Wed and learn more.

One other thing I would like to add about posts to a private group. New posts do require an admin approval. But if the admin trusts a person enough, their posts can be auto approved. I have had that happen in two groups.

I have not run a group, but I was under the impression there was a setting for that.

Folks I am sorry this is taking so long.  Both Bent and I have tried to take the page private and can't get it to happen.  We have consulted fb articles, you tubes, etc but the page doesn't seem to have the tabs the articles indicate.  I am bad at this stuff but Bent is pretty good so I don't know what is wrong.

We have another Pelletfan fb page which is already private and I may have to direct everyone to that and then just approve you as you ask. Sorry for all the issues.
