Jackfruit pulled "Pork"
« on: April 03, 2018, 07:37:47 PM »

This quote is from another thread. Thought I would try it.

Another thing to try is smoked jackfruit, or jackfruit pulled pork. Lots of recipes that will likely fool you into thinking it is the real thing.

Ed

Hard to find caned Jackfruit at the store. Found at Market of choice.
Opened can and drained. Placed on pizza screen smoked for 1 hr at 175. Yes I took can out after photo.

Placed in preheated oiled cast iron pan after smoked.

used fork to pull "smash"

Added Sweat Baby Rays BBQ sauce. Turned temp up to 200.

How was it?

I started out eating pulled pork.  Then I tried pulled chicken and beef.  I think I'll soon be trying pulled Jackfruit.

Not sure what to say. ???
Wife got home and opened the grill and wanted to know what was for dinner. I told her that I made some chicken.(I did see photo) All she saw was the pan of Jackfruit. I got her to try some thinking it was chicken before she went into house. All she said was it was sweet. Once she found out what it was she said she will have chicken.....

It is not bad. Texture is like pulled pork without any bark. Not much flavor plain so recommend not trying it plain. I only had Sweet Baby Rays in the house so after putting that on it was sweet. It pretty much tasted like what you put on it. Not sure how to get it to taste like food with a little BBQ sauce on it not like BBQ sauce.

All in all its not bad just have to figure out how to flavor it better. Oh ya not much smoke flavor also.

Thanks for sharing the experiment. I have never had it. I saw a fresh one for the first time recently at Kroger. It was kind of funny sitting there next to the oranges. For those that have never seen one, they are about the size of a basketball. Or maybe even slightly bigger, only oblong with tiny spikes all over.

Could you grill at a higher heat and see if it took on a little char flavor?

I think I will try that next time. I cooked 2 cans and have 2 cans left.

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe dipping in sauce or some other substance then put on pizza screen at higher temp to char it. The fruit itself just got dryer the longer I smoked it. I should have just turned the temp up when in the cast iron pan.

P.S. I have 3/4 hopper left before I get to the Cookinpellets I won.

I wonder if you could use a commercial glaze or marinade -- like say teriyaki -- to add some flavor and maybe a little sugar that would help the charring process?

For some reason, this made me queasy.  Am I the only one?  A fruit that can be disguised as shredded meat?  No thank you.

To the OP, I'm with your wife on this...I'll have the chicken.  ;)

I thought sweet potatoes might make a good soup. Nope, way too sweet for me. Sometimes an experiment fails.  That's part of the fun in life.  Take notes and move on.   ;)
