Once we started to raise and fatten animals for slaughter we had stepped on a slippery slope greased by profit.  My mind is in turmoil.  I can't even decide if it's wrong and what a possible solution might be if I were to judge it wrong.

I guess without knowledge of how they raise hogs here, it is hard to give an accurate thought. the one thing that I would have liked to see was where the sows are kept in a small area. I am fat I wouldn't want to live like that.

I believe hogs are raised at ground level in the us.

Yes but I was more about the conditions and how it was done here. from the footprint they are taking up on the multi leveled things is a lot smaller than what we use.

I guess unless I know at what point the animal is in discomfort, I do not know if they are being abused.  I think animal science is finding that an animal that is "comfortable" for lack of a better term usually produces more milk, has healthier wool, lays more eggs, gains more weight, insert what the livestock is supposed to do best...Now, if that costs more then what the animal produces, you might see less comfort for the live stock!

The largest pork producer in the US, Smithfield is also owned by China.  I believe the reasoning was because there are actually fewer regulations in the southern US than China.  So it ended up being cheaper to raise hogs in the US and import the meat to China than actually raise the hogs in China.
