SRF VS COSTCO PRIME
« on: July 02, 2018, 10:28:16 AM »

Never smoked a SRF W Brisket, Have done many many of the Costco Prime. Anyone think it would be worth it for an extra $1.70 a pound for the SRF?

Thanks

Does the extra $1.70/lb account for shipping?  I've never bought from SRF.  Not sure of their shipping costs, if any.

Oh yes, I did omit the fact that they are in stock at Costco's in Plano, Frisco at $4.99 a pound. Unfortunately they are very short on the Prime at $3.49 a pound

For me the best brisket I have ever cooked was a SNF Wagyu brisket. I have done 3 of them and all have come out excellent. I picked mine up when SRF had them on sale. The price I paid for them was worth it.

I just got back from Costco with a prime packer in the fridge now.  Now I'm no pro, but of the 8 or 9 briskets available, weight ranged from 11 and a half or so up over 19.   Thickness varied greatly as did amount of hard fat and bendability.  I also took note of the shape, I like a uniform looking flat.  I'd be hard pressed to let someone else pick out the pounds and specific packer.

Triple, I suspect I'm overthinking it??

PS is their website kind of confusing too?   Edit, I see they have a nice website, my work VPN was blocking much of it.

No like you I like to pick out my briskets. This is one of the reasons I go to Restaurant Depot for most of my meats. That is the tough part about ordering online. I have been quite pleased with the briskets and steaks I got from SRF. Now I can not say that for the ribs. I once ordered some Berkshire ribs and they were small.

The site is OK for me. I guess I have been on it so much that I'm use to it.

When serving Costco Primes, I routinely get "Best brisket I've ever had".  I can't see any reason to change.

My local Costco changed managers for the meat department and they rarely have prime briskets in stock any longer.  Sort of a bummer as I really liked them.  With that said, I have been buying "certified angus" briskets from our local Cash and Carry and have been very happy with them.  They aren't prime, but they cook well and taste great and I normally get them for under $3 a pound.

I've cooked one SRF wagyu brisket and loved it, I just can't justify the price if they aren't on a great sale.

So, is $4.99 a # a good price foe SRF?

Only done 1 SRF so not a lot of data, but I would say no.  And you can get it for that price when you factor in shipping?

I would think so.  The last time I was on the SRF website they were offering 4 or 5 different grades of brisket starting at USDA Prime and going up from there.  I would check though and see exactly what you are buying.  If it is just a USDA Prime with the SRF brand on it $5 a pound might be a bit high compared to what you could find elsewhere.  If it is indeed an American Wagyu brisket, by a truck load at that price.  :-)

It is labeled SRF American Wagyu brisket, But wow, Sticker Shock, I know I do my arithmetic by the serving and I can still make sense of it, but oh well, I guess I'll just have to try one and see if it's that much better for my taste.

Looks like it's going to be around a while.

Yes if it is Wagyu I would buy that all day long.

I just looked at the SRF website.  They don't exactly break it down by price per pound, but it looks like the least expensive ones there are about $10 a pound.
