Summertime Use of Your Pellet Pits
« on: July 27, 2018, 06:48:32 AM »

Since we have been without the Memphis Pro, all cooking is being done indoors right now.  It is hot and muggy and I really don't like using the oven.  Got me thinking about how often I use the pit in the summer to help keep the house cool.

What about you folks -- do you use your pits more in the summer?

I live in Florida, so central air keeps the house cool during the summer.  The hot and muggy stuff is outside where the pit is.  That being said, I do all the weekend cooking out on the pits. :bbq:

I voted once a week or less.  It is too blasted hot out there to do much.  I like to drink beer while I am smoking something, but it is not fun when the heat index is in the 90's at 8 AM.  By noon the heat index is over a 100.  It is not bad if there is a wind blowing, but it seems like the hotter it gets the less the wind is blowing.

We cook year-round outside baring extreme inclement weather... As we have a few pits we have never had the unfortunate experience of having to cook inside in hot weather.

Hope the RTD gets installed in your Memphis, solves the problem and gets you back outside. What a relief that will be!

It's hot in Vegas during these three months. I have done long overnight cooks when the high will be 110f.  But the food is usually done before noon.

My patio is facing directly west with very little shade, so my patio at times is over 95f at 6 am due to the heat soak in the walls and concrete.

Even my trusty kettle :bbq: gets little use, and I really want a nice steak for dinner.

I'm probably in the 1-2 week guy now no matter the season. All I know is I don't use it enough.

When it's this hot, we eat a lot of salads.

I suspect I'm year round 2-4 times a week.  Sunday bacon plus a few dinners a week.

Rain or shine, no biggy.   We're having what most consider to be a major heat wave in the PNW.   95 degrees or so for 10 days straight.  It's quite pleasant with a breeze being by the pit.

I cruise the waters of WA and BC all summer so the pits get a 4-5 month vacation.

We grill out 4-5 nights a week during the summer.  Would say at this point half is on the pellet half is on the trusty ole weber drum.

Two to three times a week year-round depending on what my wife picks up at the grocery.  Sometimes just the meat and other times both meat and sides.  I put a shoulder on last night and will have it for dinner then sandwiches on Saturday/Sunday.  I just go with the flow.  She knows I like to grill and will usually keep in mind.  I am not a real picky eater.

I have not done much of anything on the grill since my last big jerky cook about 2 months ago.  Between being out of town and it being so hot, I have not had the chance or desire.  That being said, I have some family on my wife's side coming over for the weekend so I have 3 racks of ribs and about 5# of pork shoulder burnt ends on the MAK right now.  Was going to use the Memphis, but after I did some low heat jalapeno and cheddar sausage, andouille sausage, and some burgers on it I realized it is caked with grease on the drip pan.  Need to get that cleaned up before using again.

I answered 2-4 times per week.  When I am not travelling for work, our pits get a pretty good workout all week long, year round.  I wish I could say I use my RT 100% of the time, but alas, both the RT and the gasser split time.

We have been hitting 115 to 117 on and off the past couple of weeks.  Lots of salads, cold sandwiches and eating out for us during the summer. My DC is parked 3 feet from the back door.  I use it twice a week for hot meals and to make left overs.  Love the wifi this time of year.
