Smoke vs rub

I read a lot about Quers wanting more smoke (I must admit I am not a big smoke fan however I do like the smoke ring).  Anyway IMO if you get to much smoke you take way from the rub and/or BBQ sauce flavors.  So I am wondering how others feel about this?

The amount of smoke one wants is extremely a personal preference. I love the amount of smoke I get from my pellet smokers. I don't feel the amount of smoke I get takes away from my rubs.

this was an almost comical evolution for me.  First BBQ was just a sauce you put on meats (this would have been my gasser days.)  Then I thought BBQ was smoke (electric smoker days).    Now BBQ is just so much more:  brine, cure, marinade, inject, rub and smoke.     

So yes, over-smoked BBQ is just that.  A balance of smoke and rub is what I'm going for.   I don't even do much with sauces anymore outside of pork.

I'll second that.  Too much smoke tastes to me just like the smell of a burnt down building..A light "touch" is an other layer of flavour.

I have so little desire for "BBQ" food that I can't even give you an answer.  Grilling I think always was my true enjoyment even before I stated on the Competition Journey 17 years ago.  To have a marinated grilled chicken thigh, or a charred piece of skirt steak, a perfectly cooked tenderloin or just a hardwood, charbroiled cheeseburger is me now days!  And sauce and spices are very important in all of those for me!

The "star" of the show should be the meat the rub, smoke, marinade.... Should all work to compliment the flavor of the meat not over power it.  Just my .02 worth.
