For those living on or near the east coast, Tropical Storm Florence(forecast to be a hurricane by Sunday) is headed your way, and everyone that's potentially in the path of this storm needs to make preparations in dealing with this potentially dangerous hurricane. (I know, there's a lot of "potentials" here, but better safe than sorry, and the National Hurricane Center is generally pretty accurate).

Things can change between now and then, but it looks to be headed toward the Carolinas, arriving sometime Thursday, with possible Category 4 (130–156 mph) winds.

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

INIT  08/0900Z 24.5N  54.2W   55 KT  65 MPH
 12H  08/1800Z 24.6N  55.0W   60 KT  70 MPH

Mayberry is about the same Lat.? as Ocean City or Salisbury, MD...and is about 130 miles from Ocean City as the crow flies, I guess a Hurricane would never come in that far ehh?  No idea?  I come from the land of volcanoes and earthquakes!

It may not have the wave surge and highest winds of that along the coast, but it can still be pretty strong wings and lots of rain that far inland.  Houston is about 60 miles inland, and we saw what happened there.  I wouldn't expect that you would see anything near that leave of intensity.

I live about 130 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.  There was a hurricane about 30+ years ago that was a tropical storm this far inland closed schools for 2 days in my area due to high winds (50+ mph) and significant amount of rain (5+ inches).  Nowadays, 5+ inches of rain doesn't seem a lot since we have seen that several times in August without a hurricane.

Fortunately, the rain from the hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast this week looks like it will run out of town before the rain from this hurricane hits us.  That would have been a big issue if it ended up being similar to some Nor'easter snowstorms that have collided with snow storms coming from the Midwest.

I live in W Ky, and we just got over 4" of rain from Gordon, and Ike(as a 70 mph tropical storm) knocked out our power for a week in '08. I hope the NHC is wrong, Flo takes a juke to the north, and misses the US completely!

Our local weather is currently saying we could get anywhere from 5 to 18 inches of rain -- and we just got home to find we have had 2 1/2 in the last 3 days.  Hope that forecast changes!

My wife and I have been through 7 hurricanes and it's not fun.  I hope you folks in the path are prepared.  Flo is not one to mess with.  My son lives near Raleigh and they could get cat 2 winds and loads of rain.  The ground up there is already saturated so heavy rain is going to cause a lot of flooding.  Please stay safe.

I'm live in Raleigh as well.  The latest cone projection shows it bending south.  But like you said, the wind and rain will be fierce and with all the rain we've been getting, flooding will be an issue and our trees are vulnerable with this soggy ground.  My house is surrounded by those huge pines.

Is it just me, or is this a really slow moving hurricane?  Seems like it has been in the same place for 3 days.

That is why they expect 40 inches of rain.

It's actually speeding up at the moment, currently 15mph, which is pretty good for a large hurricane. However, it's supposed to slow down as it nears the coast and goes inland, and that's where the problems start.

What's been unsaid, as far as I have seen, is the potential for bad flash flooding in the mountains, which could get up to 10 inches of rain.

Windy and rainy in Raleigh all day today. Sticks and branches down around my house but nothing serious. There will be some flooding but not the type that makes it on the news. Just mostly in flood prone areas that everybody around here knows about and where the police will block access to those roads.
My crazy stubborn in-laws ignored our pleas and are riding out the storm at there home in Wilmington. They seem ok so far but just an unecessary risk, especially with their house being waterfront on the inlet.
Many coastal areas are flooding and you have probably seen it on the news. Many of these towns are along the end of the major rivers that dump into sounds and ocean. The rain is flooding the rivers and the storm surge is pushing water back upstream to an extent where it’s acting as a xxxx that won’t allow the rain flow out to sea.
But expect to see massive flooding in Robeson County (south of Fayetteville) along the SC border. You may see Lumberton on the map in news reports. It’s not coastal but that is a naturally low lying area with flood prone rivers. It’s going to be under water for a week.
