Smoked Meatball Sub
« on: July 02, 2018, 05:21:35 PM »

I love meatball subs.  I love my smoker. Here we go!

I like to make large meatballs, almost  billiard ball size. They stay tender and juicy. Then I halve them and stuff into the sub roll.

Meatball recipe below.

Meatballs onto the smoker at 225 for one hour:

After one hour of smoke at 225:

Put meatballs in pan with marinara sauce (1 jar here). Cover tightly with foil and cook for an hour at 375 degrees:

Prepare sub roll (Amoroso Philly steak roll here) with provolone slices. I love Boar’s Head Picante Provolone:

Drop the payload and enjoy!

Looks great.  Where do you live that you were able to get an Amoroso roll?

I live in Raleigh, NC and I get them frozen from Restaurant Depot. They sell boxes of 10” and 8” rolls, sliced or unsliced. But I know about them because my parents are from West Chester, PA and Easton , PA (Philadelphia area for those that don’t know). I spent my summers up there with my grandparents when I was growing up. Still have family in West Chester.
The boxes come with 48 or so rolls so I split with my local buddy who’s originally from Conshohoken.

Easton, PA...I grew up 15 miles away from Easton and probably live about 25 miles away since I moved back 3 years ago.  Lots of good rolls in that area.  Most of them coming out of Philly or NYC bakeries.

My dad and grandparents are from Easton.  Easton High School etc.

You are absolutely right.  Along with great diners and delis, that area has phenomenal bakeries of different sorts.  Something we just don't have down here in central NC.  Sure, we have a talented baker here and there and occasionally a good deli, but it's not part of the culinary fabric (at least we have BBQ).  The best deli's around here are owned by transplants from the Philly/NYC/Jersey Shore triangle. A real Philly style Italian Hoagie would be included in my death row meal.
Good rolls make the sandwich.

Two things.  I cut the meatballs in half before placing in the roll.  Also, Top Gun part 2 is currently in production.

They look whole!  Ahh the camera angle deception!  I would think easier to eat cut in half.  The sandwich does look spectacular!  I will have to see if our RD has the rolls next time I am in!

Ya know, just two nights ago we were eating spaghetti and homemade meatballs.  I adore that meal and we are having the leftovers tonight.  But the whole time while we were eating, I couldn't help but think that we should have been eating the sandwiches shown in this thread.
