My Tamale Pie...
« on: December 29, 2018, 07:46:23 PM »

I did not get any Tamales made for Christmas this year, so I decided I would make a Beef Tamale Pie to finish off the Year!  Now, I would normally use either Jiffy Corn Muffin mix or Masa, one or the other....and I have never made a "layered" pie...so I have no idea how this will come out!  I guess we will find out in about an hour!

Just the peppers in the Ro*tel.  I just took it out and started to cut a piece and it seems way under cooked in the masa.  I think the layers was a bad idea.  Back in oven on 350° for 45 minutes and we will see!

would it work better if you precooked some of the masa before layering

It is funny, the bottom layer was Jiffy Corn Muffin mix, it was cooked, the masa was middle and top layers, and the middle was cooked, it was the top that was a little soft.  Nothing bad, I just think the cheese on top reacted with it.

Kristin felt it had to much "masa" and I would probably never make it like a Lasagna again!  Taste good and it is a light meal you would want to eat say before an Iron Man competition!

I like the masa, I just need to experiment with it, as I like to mix everything including the Jiffy together and cook it that way!  I could not even find the 2nd layer!

Was beef bouillon the only thing you used to season ground meat?

After seeing this post, it has inspired me to try my hand at making a tamale pie. I'll definitely use masa for the crust and maybe even for the topping. Since I have a plethora of pulled pork in the freezer, I'll substitute it for the ground beef. I'll play the rest by ear but probably similar to Bentley's other ingredients. Based on Bentley's comments, I may either put the cheese on top of the meat or incorporate it into the masa topping. Thanks for posting.

The bouillon was used to make the masa.  I normally would season the GB with taco seasoning as no one can eat the spices I like in it.  So, the GB just had S n P and cumin in it.

Was beef bouillon the only thing you used to season ground meat?
