Do Door Gaskets Really Help Any?
« on: January 23, 2019, 04:25:57 PM »

Every time I smoke something I wonder about the escaping smoke around the door.

Has anyone put one on a GMG DB.  If so what did you buy and did it help any?  My biggest concern is to how to get the door to fit tight all around the door.  My door fits tight at the bottom, but the gap widens as it goes to the hinge section.

My take is if the manufacturer meant for there to be no escape of smoke around the lid that they would have added a gasket or modified the lid design.  I wouldn't mess with it.

It will escape somewhere, seal the door and more will go out the chimney or elsewhere.  About the only use for it I would see is keeping the front of the pit from getting smoke staining, or if you were trying to funnel the smoke to one outlet to pipe out of a chimney extension if in a covered area or garage.

I don't think they make much of a difference.  I have not had gaskets on my green eggs for many years and really don't notice much of a difference.

There was a guy with a RT680 who did a YouTube video showing the gasket modification.   A few months later he did a follow up video showing how the gasket was wearing off and that he wouldn't do the mod again.

IMHO... A pellet smoker is a pressurized instrument. I've gotten flack from this in the past, but my opinion remains.

Pellet consumers have a fan. It serves many purposes. Most notably, is maintaining set temp. The fan creates a pressure imbalance in the pit and creates the exhaust. It also ensures better burning/efficiency.

That fan is gonna blow into the strongest exhaust port, and if the port is not adequate for the distribution, the smoke will go elsewhere.

In the end, yer food will not know the difference. If yer into a pretty smoker, you may have other thoughts.
