Is Gitchy nuts (for wanting a new Traeger Pro 575)?
« on: March 26, 2019, 01:12:18 AM »

I am a little OCD and cannot get these new Traegers off my mind. If my local hardware store would have thrown in a cover, there would be a Pro 575 box in my garage right now waiting assembly. I have a Memphis Pro, but I really think I want another Traeger too. My reasoning is grease fires and capacity. I think I cook different than many. I tend to keep piling on food during a cook and changing temps as things finish and we eat leftovers for 3-4 days. While I do believe the Memphis is by far the best grill I’ve ever owned, it doesn’t completely fit my cooking style. I’ve had 6-8 grease fires in 12 months from turning the grill up 50-75 degrees to speed up a butt or chuck or from cranking up 200 degrees to reverse sear a prime rib started on a spotless grill with fresh trap pans.

I’m thinking about getting a Traeger for chucks, reverse searing (prime rib, etc.), when I know I want to throw sausages or potatoes and onions in foil at 350-400 while the main meat is resting and use the Memphis for higher temp grilling and long cooks like brisket or butts (and commit to not raising temps at finish).

Am I nuts or how many of you have two or more pellet poopers for different uses? If I’m not nuts, is there another pit I really should be considering for $800? GMG is 100% out for me. I had bad luck and that taste is not out of my mouth yet. That’s not a bash, I know they make some really good grills for the price, but they change stuff so frequently that it’s like paying customers are Beta testers, IMHO.

Today, with two kids at home, it’s usually about cooking as much in one day as possible to have leftovers to heat and run to get to band, soccer, etc. on 2 or 3 different schedules or to cook up some extra to vac seal for a friend that’s in a hardship and I want to give them some easy meals.

To expand on that total side note, you’d be amazed at how long someone will talk about your cooking if you vac seal up a pork butt or two in quart bags and take to them after they’ve lost a loved one or had a kiddo hospitalized. It’s so easy to swing by the store and buy a package or two of buns, a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray’s and a family size Lays and you make a couple days less of a burden for them.

Nuts? - No - IMHO - Under the scenario you present - it is well worth considering.

Here - I find myself wanting to 'cull the herd' and thin down the collection and then I remember how convenient it is to have something different going in two grill/smokers at the same time.  It saves a lot of time on our part when cooking a lot at once to have two or sometimes three going at the same time. It can get a little busy, but it sure comes in handy..

Multiple Smoker/Grills come in especially well for the above ^ circumstances. IMHO..  When called upon, we use our Memphis and LG for the 'main' courses, and the little GMG DC for small fill in or something for us while the bigger ones are tied up on the bigger items.

Think - Ham, Pork butts or brisket on one, while you have dessert, veggies or mac and cheese on the other.. Etc... The capability of different flavor pellets for each..

If you have the storage - the recommendation here - is go for it..  :bbq: :bbq:  and  :bbq:

I would say do it - get it out of your system.. The game we are in can become addictive, that is owning more than one pit, and the associated gadgetry. Be proud of yourself and what you do!  Heck - There is

I have more than my Memphis for the exact same reason.  I rarely take it above 275° to reduce the chances of a grease fire.  In fact, I bought a used Blazn and 90% of the time it is only used for chicken wings.  The MAK gets used for jerky and cheese primarily.  I'm looking to cut down from 5 units to probably 3-4.  But having 2 I think is nice for the reasons you have mentioned.

Hey Gitchy, I think the decision on to buy or not is easier if decided by an old "how many bicycles should I own" formula used for those who love cycling.  The formula is pretty simple when you look at it.  W=N+1.

W= How many pits you want and should have
N= How many pits you need/have

Turns out to be a never ending cycle (no pun intended)….haha.

I am thinking several folks in this group have used this formula to their advantage/disadvantage depending on how one looks at things.....hahahaha.  I do have a couple pits for different uses, although not all pellet pits, and looking to add another hopefully soon.  Good luck with your thought process and decision making.  I know we all support you whichever way you go.

Is Gitchy nuts?

No.

I agree with previous posters, go for it.   It's a harmless hobby and can only do good in feeding friends and family and even strangers or those in need.   I've got two pellet units and one gasser in the back yard.  Will probably have a gas boiler/burner by the time Spring is done.    Only limitation is proper storage.

jnj for my cyclist friends.  I can use all my cookers at once, hard to do with multiple bikes  :P

If Gitchy is nuts, than so am I. In addition to the ones listed below, I have several on the boat.

I'm not sure my wife would like to know about all this encouragement :-) Though she had already given permission to buy the second grill.

My pellet grills have always been the most expensive grills I've had, so I've always sold the last pit when I wanted or shortly after I bought a new one. I probably should have kept my original Traeger Junior Elite and put the tailgate kit on it a few years ago and wouldn't be having this self struggle....who am I kidding, there will always be something new and shiny to make you think about upgrading. I always tend to go a little overboard with things though and I was just trying to convince myself that I'm not going way overboard having a Traeger on top of a Memphis. Thanks for that support.

Now I just have to figure out where I'm going to buy it. I'm really bummed the local hardware store wouldn't throw in a cover when paying full retail. Especially when I said I wasn't interested in free assembly and delivery. Considering it's 2 mins from my house and they sell pellets, rubs, sauces, etc, you'd think they'd really want me as a frequent shopper.

Do you need wi-fi? If not, perhaps a Pit Boss would do the trick? You can usually get one on sale for half that, and mine will cook pizzas all day long at 400.

In my experience, it’s always better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission when buying new “toys” but at least you already have permission so go ahead and pull the trigger

Picked up the new pit tonight. If your interested, keep an eye on my thread in the Traeger section over next couple weeks for some pics and data as I can. Thanks for all the feedback friends.
