I don't have a CPAP, my father does.  Guys we all know the answer, no drinking and lose 20 lbs.   Both are a challenge for me, but even the limited drinking and losing 10 lbs moves me from unhealthy snoring to not a CPAP candidate.  Just a little change makes a big difference.

Weight and drinking are a couple possible factors, but far from all of them. I've snored since I've been in college and just as bad on nights I don't drink...or at least I've been told since I'm asleep when accused of such things.

Snoring means you are lacking air.
That is what a CPAP is for
It is not to make your wife happy because it will make you not snore. It reduces heart attacks and strokes.

I need to get my wife a CPAP to stop her snoring but mast of all give her better sleep and health!

Iam glad I started this thread to help get everyone aware.

Not sure I 100% agree with this post.  I learned there is a fundamental difference between snoring and what people think a loud noise is snoring.  My wife snores but had a very low score regarding quitting breathing.  The machine helps reduce her snoring, but she still snores even with the machine.  There is a sound that people mistake for snoring that is actually your nervous system reacting to you quitting breathing while you sleep.  That sound is your body reacting to make you gasp for air in an effort to breath so that you breath and do not die from not breathing.  For those that may remember, I am pretty sure the great athlete Reggie White died of sleep apnea by quitting breathing why he was sleeping.  I quit breathing 96 times during the first hour I was "sleeping" during my sleep test.  They immediately put me on a machine.  I was a prime candidate for dying in my sleep from what was perceived by others as snoring.  My wife is not a prime candidate for dying in her sleep from actual snoring.  I beg to differ that snoring is sleep apnea and a threat to your life.  Please provide me some evidence if you feel different.

Funny story is that I did not sleep well because I had sleep apnea.  Because I was awake, I would hear my wife snoring which further kept me awake.  Because I worked and she didn't, I complained her snoring was causing me to not sleep.  Thus, she went for a sleep apnea test, had a pretty low score, but they said she would see a benefit from a machine so she got one.  Her snoring reduced, and I thought I slept a little better.  For other reasons, I went a had a sleep apnea test a year or so after her to find out I was the one with the problem.

Short story, if you feel sluggish because you feel you may not be sleeping well or someone thinks you may be "snoring", go get a test.  It may save your life or help you live longer than you may have had you not starting sleeping with assistance of a machine.

My understanding is snoring is a possible symptom of sleep apnea, but not everyone that snores has Apnea or needs a CPAP. I was told people on the other side of the house could hear me snore through closed doors, but I barely qualified for a CPAP after a study. I hate using it, but I won’t quit either because I feel so much better. The sleep doctor is actually surprised.

That all being said, if you do snore or have ever been told by anyone you stopped breathing in the night or sounded like you held your breat, GET A SLEEP STUDY and make sure you don’t have untreated sleep apnea. Even if you don’t have insurance the study is fairly cheap and there are always CPAP machines you can buy refurbished or second hand. You can have sleep Apnea regardless of you gender, age, or weight. Though if you are a chubby old man, you’re odds are much greater than a Miss America contestants would be.

Totally agree with this statement.. I had a study done a few years back and my doctor told me it was the worst he ever saw.  I have now been using a CPAP for close to six years.  my sleep has been so much better since using it and so has my wife's sleep.

By the way a sleep study can be done in your own home.

One caveat if you do a home sleep study. I was ready to do the home sleep study right up to the point I was told I could NOT use supplemental oxygen for the duration of the study. I then went to the lab for the study. The tech kept trying to turn down my oxygen flow rate but my o2 saturation would drop like a stone when he did and I would wake up every time.

The sleep doctor did not believe I needed a CPAP as I only had 2-3 events per hour. My pulmonologist reviewed the raw data and found I had 70 events per hour during REM sleep and little to none during light and deep sleep. So I got a CPAP.

Before the study I had argued that I didn’t have sleep apnea because I don’t snore. I was wrong.
