I’ve never been but I have 3 friends in Charleston who eat/have eaten there when they are on the road for work (it’s not particularly close to anywhere). One friend said it was “meh” but the other two swear by it and say it’s the best whole hog bbq anywhere.

It probably won’t surprise you as fellow cookers that the friend that says “meh” is the only one of the three that is a bbq cooking hobbyist (green egg).  We are spoiled and hard to please sometimes.

There is a Scott’s location in Charleston but my friends are referring to the original which is what this video is.

That’s the type of bbq I grew up with in central/eastern North Carolina. Whole hog chopped with vinegar sauce.

I recently went to Scott's BBQ in Charleston and loved it. It was great BBQ in my opinion. I would love to go to the one in Hemingway, South Carolina one day. My family is from Eastern NC where whole hog is king so this is what I grew up on.

That video has got to be the best ever I've seen. So straight forward and informing..Just loved the not before 9:30 and no cell phone use while ordering signs..It is reminiscent of my days spent in the South

and being fortunate enough to find true BBQ like this.. As for labor intensive, it's a labour of love..Reminds me of an extremely gifted woodworker. When I asked how much time he spent on some of his

finished pieces he said he didn't really know. He tried to estimate some of the times and with that estimation we figured his cost/hour would be pennies.

Great video.  One of these days I want to do a whole hog.
Love to vinegar base sauces.  Don't like the sweet ones.

Where in eastern NC?  I grew up in Chapel Hill and live in Raleigh.

Pretty much everything east of Raleigh. Areas like Kinston, New Bern, Ayden (Skylight Inn BBQ), Greenville, Carolina Beach, etc.

Since you live in Raleigh, have you checked out Nahunta Pork Center? They have an outlet at the Farmers Market. Their main store is in Pikeville. All fresh pork products. I used to live in Raleigh.

I love Nahunta. I work/live close enough to visit the Farmers Market every few weeks.  I’ve been to the main store a few times. I’m blown away every time. Picked up that pork belly with ribs attached that I posted awhile back.
I think once I visit there again, my next endeavor will be a 1/4 pig. It’s pretty much just like it sounds. A front quarter of the pig that includes the full shoulder (with butt), ribs, and belly. Skin on. It will fit nicely on my pellet grill.

For the others that are not familiar. As Triplebq said, Nahunta is a pork center. It is a pig farm with a large butchery on site. They have all things pork...fresh, cooked, and cured.
I’d guess it’s about the size of a Walgreens if you include front and back of the house.

My wife and I did a BBQ road trip last week as my work sent me to Richmond for a conference. We rented a car and drove 1900 miles in a couple days. We hit Skylight in Ayden, Rodney Scott's in Charleston, Lexington BBQ in Lexington, Red Bridges in Shelby, Buxton Hall in Asheville, Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, and Barrel House BBQ in Lynchburg (after the Jack Daniel's tour).

All that to say this.... As far as the Charleston location, the chicken with white sauce was good. The pork was meh, but the ribs were fantastic. It was actually quite hard for me to quantify that because I cook good ribs. I have eaten good ribs. I thought "ribs are ribs" but I was wrong. These were the best I had ever had. Don't know why. Maybe quality of meat, maybe sauce, maybe cooking method. Either way, ribs were great. Everything else, meh. Mac and cheese was not good, potato salad was just ok. The restaurant itself was nice enough. Very busy.

What was your thoughts on Big Bob Gibson's?  And, that is quite a tour.  Sounds like some of my trips to see Mississippi Blues Trail Markers.

Gibson's was the worst bbq we had on the whole trip. When you first walk in there are just tons of trophies sitting in the entry way. I have no doubt that Chris Lily can throw down some bbq. However, what is being served at that restaurant is not the food that won any awards. The brisket tasted like pot roast, the chicken and pig were just meh, and the ribs were very over cooked. They were falling off the bone mush. I was super disappointed.

The highlight was Buxton Hall. Everything was on point, the pig and the sides and a slushie they make from Cheerwine and bourbon.

Wow!  Different than my experience there.  If you didn't like theirs, be glad you didn't go to The Shed in MS Gulf Coast.  I've had better at Chili's and Applebee's than at that place.
