Steam Engine #4014
« on: November 20, 2019, 12:18:22 PM »

Just saw for the first time an operating Steam Engine.
Tracks are right across the highway from my work in St. Marys, KS., man what a neat piece of machinery.
On the internet it says it left Wyoming on the "Great race across the Southwest".
Can not believe the amount of cars driving along side it and the people lining the highway.
If you google "Big Boy steam engine" you can find more info.
It is the largest steam engine in the world that is operational.
Awful neat.

If that is really interesting to you and you ever find yourself in Oregon we have a "Steam-Up" every year that showcases that sort of stuff. There is a steam powered ice cream churner that makes fresh ice cream. It is tasty. If the link gets removed google Oregon Steam Up

I have an old school mate hat lived in Iowa, he posted some video he took of it.

we also have several festivals that have a lot of old steam powered tractors and equipment. They have one huge engine hey built a building around, it has plexiglass plates on the side and you can watch the internal workings of it.

The cheap ticket was from Colton to Barstow, 72.3 miles and it was 1 way for $350.00. Or the executive car, same distance was a paltry $15,000.00. I do think that was divisible by 8 people, it’s not really clear.

Colton to Barstow, what lovely scenery they would get to see, a bargain at twice the price...although you would get to do the Tehachapi loop, and that would be pretty cool!

Tehachapi Loop would be between Colton and Bakersfield.

I guess you are right, I thought the trains split and they could go to the Valley or out to the desert.  I guess they would go out over the Cajon Pass, another infamous stretch of line.

They gain quite a bit of elevation both ways. It is a beautiful drive thru either pass. I have driven the Cajon many times.

In Michigan they run the "Polar Express" from Owosso, MI to Ashley, MI.
It is The North Pole Express and is pulled by the world-famous Pere Marquette 1225 steam locomotive.

The blueprints for the Pere Marquette 1225 were used as a model for the actual Polar Express in the 2004 film.
