What do I do when I am in the middle of a big heat spell and it is too hot to hike. I am also 13 hours into smoking two pork butts and they are only in the 170's. So I have time on my hands to try a new cooking method. I tried to fry an egg on our asphalt drive. It takes 158 deg to cook an egg. The asphalt was over 160. The problem, which I knew in advance, is that the egg will cool the surface. I allowed the eggs to heat to over 100 degrees by leaving them outside in the shade for few hours prior to the test. The first attempt did nothing. The asphalt was at 162. In the spirit of true Mythbusters, to minimize asphalt cooling, we decided to heat the egg close to 160 in a water bath. The egg started curdling around 120 so I had to pull it off. The last try was also unsuccessful. I moved the egg around the asphalt to fresh hot sections but it did not seem to help. It will have to be a lot hotter than it got today to cook an egg on my asphalt drive. I also placed a cast iron skillet on the drive but it did not get hot enough to try. So I guess I cannot use the excuse that I didn't hike because it was hot enough to cook an egg on the sidewalk.
Note: most, if not all, of the curdled white shown in the picture came from heating the egg in the water bath. The asphalt is 165.3 in the picture.
