Is RD Worth the Drive?
« on: October 22, 2024, 06:27:05 PM »

I am trying to figure out the best place to go for meat. I am curious about Restaurant Depot. I have never been there. The closest one was always about 4 hours or more away. Since my most recent move, there is now a store a little over an hour away. This makes the trip a bit more doable.

What should I expect? Overall, are meat prices cheaper or is the quality better than places like Sam's Club or Gordon's Food Service? They are about 15 minutes away. The other option would be Costco. I have only been there a couple of times. I don't have a membership, but could probably find someone to go with me who does. Is it worth the drive to Restaurant Depot?

I will be  watching this also. I have a Gordons and Sams maybe 30 minutes away, Costco and RD are over an hour.

I usually go to Gordons, he people are nice and it is not as crowded as Sam's but prices on some things are not a deal and can be had cheaper at a local grocery store or even Wally World.

Here is a link to the RD flier for Troy MI.

Tough question.  To me, to make RD a worthwhile trip you have to be prepared to buy things in quantity.  Shopping for just a couple of pieces of meat does not justify the ride/gas.

I think Costco meat is better than RD, especially the more expensive cuts. And Costco salmon is the best.  If you like coffee, the Kirkland brand is great.

Does RD require a membership?

It use to require that you had a business resale license or could show you were a member of a charity group.  I think that changed when Covid hit and their sales tanked, so they may now allow one day "members". But I am not sure about that.

Business license or 501 (c) 3 Tax ID.  Used to be able to get 1day pass with KCBS Membership, not sure of other options. 4 hour round trip, tough call. 2 hour round trip, no brainer, especially when you have big orders or are buying for 6 months!  I usually spend $400-500 each time i go in, about twice a year!  If you do go, always check the discount meat rack in the meat dept.

I agree with Bentley's take on it including the membership part.  I wouldn't drive 4 hours to go there.  I would just got to Sam's.
