thermometers
« on: December 30, 2017, 10:08:58 AM »

Probably not a new question however I am curious as to what thermometers you all have and do you use them.  I have the thermopen instant read and also the probes for my pellet grill however I was wondering if anyone uses an infrared one or others when they cook.  Also are they worth the money?

I have an inferred in my thermometer collection...I rarely use it. Have used it to check pit surface temps and did use it to check cast iron cookware. I am so used to cooking on cast iron and the range I cook I just don't need it..It is helpful for uses other than cooking such as automotive and a/c work.

I have just about everything that Thermoworks sells, and probes for my Memphis and MAK.  I find the MAK probes run about 10-15 degrees higher than actuality.  I went to use my infrared a few weeks back to get the temp on a griddle I had on my Weber.  Battery was dead so I never did use it that day.  That would be about the only thing I can see myself using it for nowadays.

I've got a few infrared therms. I got the first to measure the temps in my kids reptile cages. I use them quite often for cooking. They're great for pizza stones and even use to check the frying pan temp when frying eggs. They're handy to have around they house for checking operating temps of various things. You should understand a little about the emissivity of the surface you are measuring. You can get a pretty good one for less than $20.

I have a white Theropen, it's white and priven in tests that it is the fasted reading and most accurate.

I have the old style Maverick ET-372 for about 4 years now.  Still going strong.  Had to replace a few probes, 90% of them to my stupidity.

My Yoder only has the one to manage the fire.

No infrared, but I've got a Tappecue that I find I'm using less and less as my skills improve and I learn more about my smoker - easy to do with a consistent pit. I've got a Lava Tools Javelin that gets the most use on every cook.

I have a Maverick 733 which I never used all that much. But then I got a Tappecue, and I love it! I use it for any large meat cook and find it easy to use and very helpful.

A couple thermapens. The newest one is a MK4. Also a thermapop and a thermoworks infrared that I use on my Uuni 3 pizza oven more than on BBQ. A Stoker for pit temps on my WSM, my drums and my MAKs. Also have Maverick et73's which I have used for years and remain accurate.
