Smoking Vs. Grilling
« on: January 13, 2018, 02:13:24 PM »

Just a quick question regarding the line between smoking and grilling...

I have always considered anything over 300 grilling, but I was watching a show earlier today that put a temp of 225 as grilling.

What is your perspective, I would like to see where the real line is...

Very rarely do I ever go over say 275, and mostly between 185 and 250.

Thanks,
Bill

My thought was:

Smoking below 200°.
BBQ 200° up to 350°.
And Grilling anything over 350°.

but...I consider grilling anything over 500°!

In my simple way of thinking, anytime I'm using smoke and imparting smoke flavor to my cook I'm smoking, even if the temps are higher than "low and slow". I'm grilling when I use the gasser, and smoking when I use the smoker.

I'm not sure there is a real line for this question. I guess it just comes down to semantics in the end. I'm sure we'll get as many different answers to this question as there are cooks.

Anytime I'm cooking a steak, Chops I'm usually cooking above 350 and actually go around 500 because My Bride likes her meat "Crispy" I guess that would be grilling, Anything below 275 for me is smoking. :2cents:

Thanks All! I guess Michael is right and there is no real line, its more of a soft subjective line.

Puts it into perspective for me. Thanks!   ;D
