An Automobile Racing Giant Has Passed
« on: January 19, 2018, 09:37:59 AM »

I just read that Dan Gurney died last Sunday.  I think the media was rather quiet.

He won races in the Trans-Am, Can-Am, NASCAR, Formula 1 and Indy car series.  He was the first driver to win races in sports cars (1958), Formula 1 (1962), NASCAR (1963) and Indy cars (1967).  The only other two to accomplish this feat are Mario Andretti and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Dubious achievement—He started the champagne-spraying tradition after winning the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans with co-driver A.J. Foyt.

I agree, first I've heard of it.

He was a legend. I knew his nephew Thom in California. His Indy cars were the Eagles if memory serves. His nephew was a very well respected Porsche mechanic and officianado.

Being a kid in the 60's, growing up in Indianapolis was fantastic! May was, and still is a very special time of year for me. I loved all the racers, Gurney wasn't my favorite at the time, but as I've aged I have nothing but respect for all the pioneers at Indy! I still enjoyed his competitiveness. He came close to winning a few times.
