NY Strip whole-% lost when trimmed

Does anyone know the percentage of loss when you trim a whole NY strip.  I bought a prime whole NY strip from Costco today and I am guessing I lost somewhere between 15-20% when I trimmed it.  I thought the price of $ 7.99 was pretty good but I wonder if I really saved any money.

I would think a great deal of your question would depend on how the Primal was cut down...Any reason why you would not leave the fat on and let folks deal with it with their slice or steak?

I picked up one a few weeks ago. I didn't measure, but after trimming a little fat, removing the backstrap, and removing the vein end, I probably lost 15-20%.  So it probably works out to the same price as the precut steaks ($9.99). But the trim, other than the backstrap, is going to make some fine burgers.

Can’t go wrong with a Rib Eye no matter how you slice it. I trim some fat off mine to help reduce the risk of a grease fire. I leave some fat for the flavor. Here is a platter of them I grilled last fall.

I would do the same.

It wasn't clear from the OP what he was trimming - there's more to it than just fat. Removing the back strap makes for better eats and presentation. And if you don't trim off the vein end, someone is going to end up with an inferior steak.

I guess I wasn't very clear on what I was trimming-mostly backstrap.  I removed some of the fat but by no means all the fat.
Price wise I am thinking that it was a wash compared to the cut prime NY strips.  But I did get to cut the steaks to a thickness that I wanted.  Last fall Costco for one week had a $ 20 off special on any whole prime NY strip-now that was a deal!
